Asset Management Day

739

You and I are old enough to remember the grief when a star player left to go to England.  Today, with Odsonne Edouard’s anticipated departure, grief is replaced by relief.  This is nothing to do with the player’s ability, he will be missed on the field, but success on the grass is determined by the astuteness in the Asset Management game.  If Celtic are to enhance their chances with the former, they need to optimise the latter.  Eddie has to leave with financial compensation coming the other way.

Whatever Crystal Palace pay, a significant portion will to go Paris Saint-Germain (widely reported as 40%).  We paid €10m when the player signed permanently in 2018, so although the money will have an impact on current and future trading, we will scarcely break even on the player, a sign that his value (€10m plus sell-on clause) did not appreciate during his time in Glasgow.

Ryan Christie, like Stuart Armstrong three years ago, is one I hoped we would be able to hold onto.  Ryan spent three years going nowhere (if you discount loans to Inverness and Aberdeen) before he transformed Celtic when coming on as a halftime substitute against Hearts at Murrayfield in October 2018.  Celtic started that season poorly with Brendan Rodgers unable to conjure a fix until a series of injuries gave Ryan his chance.  He played a significant role in rescuing Celtic’s season, and Brendan’s reputation, as they secured the Treble Treble and remained a key player in the subsequent treble and European campaigns.

Money talks and Celtic players listen when wages above £50k per week are mentioned (Edouard will earn significantly above this).  With only six months left on his current deal, I doubt we will earn much for Ryan, but the principle remains the same; churn them before they leave for free.

Filipe Jota and Georgios Giakoumakis are waiting in the tunnel, so the ‘F5 hours’ should be busy.

  1. Some shouts for palyers to bring in would have you believe they haven’t been considered.

  2. Jack Hendry adds proof positive that asset management works.

Wonder, which one on here will be driving him there from the Oostende?

  3. SIONNAIGH on 31ST AUGUST 2021 7:49 PM

JHB, with a business head like you on board I’ll wager your bowling club’s making a profit, on paper at least.

    —–

So give us your breakdown – I bet you don’t have one…..but you just like to ‘shoot from the hip’

When I disagree with someone, I explain and tell them why…..can you do this? I am all ears!!!

  4. MARTIM1980 @ 7:23 PM,

We could have a circular disagreement about this ad-infinitum.

If I state something as fact…

For instance, that “Ange wants two quality players in each position” and I’m called out on that, then surely the onus is on me to prove it.

Put up or shut up if you will.

    SFtBs @ 7:40 PM,

Still not persuaded, not a compelling argument for me.

Neil Lennon was not responsible for bringing Ajer, Calmac through, a very wide stretch of a fertile imagination would be needed there. Who are the etc, the likes of Ralston, Welsh?

No, Ange has done more for the Celtic academy bhoys first team progression in the last two months than Lenny did in his whole Celtic career including when he was at the Celtic academy.

    Hail Hail

  5. Wonder what happened regarding Aurélio Buta. Not our problem now as we have Juranovic but it was suggested that we had been outbid by Everton who no longer wants him.

Wonder if the agent was trying to drum up interest because surely if he was that good, at that price, he’d have been snapped up by the end of the window.

  6. stephenofderby on

Lots of comments on here asserting that Ange is unhappy with the signings so far. A lot of mind readers. Whilst there is always more you can do has it occured to anyone that the manager will manage? He said when the window closes hell see where we are and move forward. I would be more concerned about signing any old player at the last minute. I think we have enough to be at the top by the new years match against them and can try to improve in the next window again. I thought Sunday was a hard test but steep learning curve for the new guys. Ange will know now that referees will do us no favours after Clancy also.

    Still glass half full Celtic.

I expect somebody to deconstruct every word and sentence of this but luckily I love Celtic so no smarty pants analysis of this post will change that. Top by Christmas!

  7. someone posted we were interested in Malmo center back – I googled the only decent one they have. Out of our league I think!

  8. PeterLatchfordsBelly on

Not a squad that will win the league.

Big Ange stitched up by wee Dom.

Eddie Howe saw through them as the small time bean counters they are.

  9. @ SETTING FREE THE BEARS FOR RES. 12 & OSCAR KNOX on 31ST AUGUST 2021 7:40 PM

Just a point – Ajer made his debut under BR and CalMac under RD.

  10. PETEC @ 7:37 PM

Totally agree – I would be happy with not another loan through the door this window.

It has in the last three seasons left holes all over our squad. Give an academy lad a Jersey first.

Unless like OE we have an option to buy, the it should be a no go.

    Hail Hail

  11. ROLLING_STONE @ 8:08 PM,

SFtBs is pretty good at doing his research.

If Ajer, Calmac etc is the best he came up with, I’d suggest my assertion on Jamsie was correct.

    Hail Hail

  12. JHB, your preamble alluded to a false pretence, “There are some who seem to think that at this moment in time Celtic are awash with money”. Armed with a false narrative you only had yourself to convince otherwise.

It’s light enough yet to be throwing bowls or is there a committe meeting this evening?

  13. PSG turn down £189m for Mbappe and would rather let him run his contract down.

And we thought our asset management was questionable.

  14. Apologies, I wiz talking about Odsonne.

I Always want ex Celts to do well.

If ex players bad mouth the Hoops – I ain’t gonnae have any time for them.

  15. Sky reporting Christie went for 2.5m. Seems high with only a few months left on his contract.

If true its….”get that money in the effing biscuit tin” roar the board .

  16. Timothy Leary

    @sharko67

    40m

Sevco 3 match package £117 and those in the ticket scheme have to find that money by next Monday.

  17. PLB,

Lawwell brought McKay in and the nodding ducks on the board agreed and Dermot who approved the shower appointment ( whilst rather Merry ) gave it his blessing. McKay is Lawwells latest puppet and this a typical beancounter transfer window—- not asset management. It’s to come out with a profit and reduce the wage bill. Mission accomplished, bonus achieved and dividends to the absentee landlord.

Ange has given the support hope , the Board have killed any chance of a league challenge. Lawwell has made more wrong decisions in the history of Celtic in the last 2 years. Yet he appoints his puppet and it’s the same mo. Even got Paul67 spinning it with nonsense about taking first place by beating Sevco. The gap will be at least 10 points with Ange back in Oz for the summer.

Bankier, Lawwell & the puppet continue the downsizing at full throttle.

  18. David66 on 31st August 2021 7:52 pm

Why not go get the bhoy from St Johnstone.

He is young and fits our so called model, then of course maybe Ange doesn’t fancy him.

    D :)

    …………………………………………………………..

Thats a decent shout David but I think we are likely to have better within the Young Ones in our own Club. He is a Good player howevaaaaah and surprised noone has went for him in this window.

  19. Paul The Spark on

Does anyone have the number of players we have lost and the number we have brought in? Just curious if we have lost more than we have brought in. Would be disappointed if we have as Ange keeps saying we are short of bodies

  20. Eddie and Griff out – Georgios in

    Christie out – Jota in

Happy with that but still not seeing us add the depth Ange asked for after rangers game!

Can we get a surprise defender >

  21. Not sorry to see Ryan leave after his petulant reaction to Kyogo shooting on Sunday. If I had £1 for every time he’s blootered the ball over the bar from 25 yards when he had a pass on I’d be rich. Couldn’t get over his brass neck after he failed to play KF in with a simple 1-2 in the 1st half but chose instead to balloon the ball into the Copeland Road. On his day a very good player but inconsistent and clearly IMO too big for his boots. Having said all that I wish him well and I’m grateful for some great goals along the way but onwards and upwards Celtic! HH

  22. Celtic Mac at 7.59pm,

Well said. Too many posts on here saying “Jack Hendry, if we don’t have a sell on clause someone has really screwed up” when 18 months, two years ago, people couldn’t get the lad out of Celtic fast enough. Sure, his early performances weren’t indicative of his potential, but some of the opprobrium directed at a young footballer, a Celtic player at that, was way beyond the pale. Good luck to him.

  23. We have lost 2 centre backs and brought in 1.

Lost 3 midfielders and brought in 1.

Not counting projects like Scales , Shaw and Urhoghide

  24. Saint Stivs,

Ny Nephew told me that they have to pay £50 every year to stay on their waiting list to become a ST holder.

  27. Oooof Jota on the left, Abada on the right,

Kyogo in the middle giving it to them tight.

Try defending against all their movement….

  28. FIELDOFDRAMS on 31ST AUGUST 2021 8:30 PM

Word has it, we have an “undisclosed” sell-on fee.

Seeing as pretty much the entire fee is profit, a deal similar to the one PSG had with Eddie could see a cool few million into the coffers.
