Asset Management Day

739

You and I are old enough to remember the grief when a star player left to go to England.  Today, with Odsonne Edouard’s anticipated departure, grief is replaced by relief.  This is nothing to do with the player’s ability, he will be missed on the field, but success on the grass is determined by the astuteness in the Asset Management game.  If Celtic are to enhance their chances with the former, they need to optimise the latter.  Eddie has to leave with financial compensation coming the other way.

Whatever Crystal Palace pay, a significant portion will to go Paris Saint-Germain (widely reported as 40%).  We paid €10m when the player signed permanently in 2018, so although the money will have an impact on current and future trading, we will scarcely break even on the player, a sign that his value (€10m plus sell-on clause) did not appreciate during his time in Glasgow.

Ryan Christie, like Stuart Armstrong three years ago, is one I hoped we would be able to hold onto.  Ryan spent three years going nowhere (if you discount loans to Inverness and Aberdeen) before he transformed Celtic when coming on as a halftime substitute against Hearts at Murrayfield in October 2018.  Celtic started that season poorly with Brendan Rodgers unable to conjure a fix until a series of injuries gave Ryan his chance.  He played a significant role in rescuing Celtic’s season, and Brendan’s reputation, as they secured the Treble Treble and remained a key player in the subsequent treble and European campaigns.

Money talks and Celtic players listen when wages above £50k per week are mentioned (Edouard will earn significantly above this).  With only six months left on his current deal, I doubt we will earn much for Ryan, but the principle remains the same; churn them before they leave for free.

Filipe Jota and Georgios Giakoumakis are waiting in the tunnel, so the ‘F5 hours’ should be busy.

  1. Team is stronger, bottom line

bottom line is stronger too, I see what you done there :O)

me I like watching Celtic, could care less about money, politics or religion.

especially dont give any head space to an other club I have no time for. support ,money, politics or religion.

    ps

about football, two undefeated teams in the SPFL, if they both beat Celtic and rangers the league may well be out of reach before Christmas. lol. the ‘new Firm’ ?

  2. SAINTSTIVS

Possibly – I just looked up Wikipedia, and no reference, but the information is not always comprehensive.

  3. PETEC

I don’t really like making personal comments but I wonder if he is sponsored by Victor’s Wig Boutique.

A complete lack of insightfullness. An inarticulate buffoon out of the same anti-Celtic stable as Goram and big Broon. Frankly ridiculous and bordering on the disgraceful that Sky actually use him on the network.

  4. Loving the Huns on here tonight because there is nothing doing at their end.

Pathetic statements about Dominic McKay being in any way recruited by Peter Lawwell. It suits all to think Peter is still the bogeyman. Pathetic.

One minute Ed needs to go and so does Ryan Them when they do go and are replaced then it’s still wrong.

Really sad. Like the individual who spent the entire 90 mins on Saturday on here abusing the team he supposedly supports.

  5. Emdy at all think there will be a rabbit oot a hat in the next 150 minutes? Naw? Me neither.

  6. But still hoping. Why? Because there hasn’t been an “All business completed” announcement.

Has anyone heard from Lennybhoy or Catman?

  7. Go tell the Spartim on

So who recommended Dom ? Are you suggesting PL didn’t have input in the appointment ?

Not sure I would say the self confessed rangers supporting Ian Mcleod was a high flying executive pre Celtic. He was fast tracked by Archie Norman pre Walmart taking over asda but not a fraction of the broad experience to be a ceo of a top football club.

Lawwell did not come in as ceo

, he earned that position by steadying a ship which McDonald and Mcleod had seriously holed below the waterline. To be fair all he did initially was implement Brian Quinn’s blueprint. He did that well and we survived winning more than them until they died.

Failure if you chose to label it so. Others in time will view it as the most successful period in our domestic history.

  9. Go tell the Spartim on

I’m sitting here 🤞🏽 Hoping we sell OE to get the cash then it dawns on me, we won’t do anything football related with it. I suppose it’s last chance to get any decent cash for him

  10. Half nine at night and OE transfer to CP still to be confirmed. Strange.

If Ange can get a consistent 7/10 from every team he selects until the January window we should be okay. Cut out the calamity and find a few one nils away to whoever, Ross County, Aberdeen, doesn’t matter. Build a bit of momentum and keep the Govanites in our sights.

Europe is really all about trying to compete against better players. And the disco lights.

  11. looks like the vickers Carter won’t happen – anyway, we said we had 2-3 targets for each position. Waiting on the contingency! suspect it’ll be Scales and Murray

hard not to be disappointed from a defensive perspective, considering the celtic park fan huddle now takes place every time we concede a corner!

  12. I am happy we have signed a left winger, as much as christie could play out there he was not a winger, did not have the pace or skill to hit the line.

I am glad we purchased a forward who wants to play for us. Is he as good as eduard? Eduard is a footballer with great technical ability. Looks like they are very different types with the new boy looking more of a powerful in your face forward.

Worth remembering it’s not the best 11 players that make the best team, but the best suited 11 players for the system you intend to play.

Have no problem with a smaller 1st team squad and supplementing it with younger players. Will would have preferred another centreback, leftback and centremid in the team.

However, I dont see the younger players enough to confidently say if Scales and shaw etc. are good enough. Montgomery certainly does look like a baller, great tough, composed and has good pace.

  13. Go tell the Spartim on

    Turksybhoy

Anthony Joseph @sky tweeted he’d agreed terms £70,000 pw Didn’t say he’d signed but just terms agreed so not long now

  14. so happy we got rid of Edward – seriously looked like a 5m player and just fractionally better than Ajeti lately. Thank god Palace have a Frenchman in charge otherwise we would have got zilch money and zilch on the park for another season.

  15. McKay is Lawwells appointment Burnely78 ; he knows him and he is on the board that would have ran the recruitment. He made sure he got to the shortlist and managed the process all the way to Desmond. Then it was a toss of a coin with another on the shortlist.

I could be really Machiavellian and suggest he he made sure the other guy was a bull in a China shop. However we all know Peter has Celtics interest at heart and he does not have a manipulative bone in his body.

This has been a Lawwell transfer window with the wet behind the ears McKay on a leaning curve on how to achieve the bonus as he learns to put his head in the trough.

Ange will feel a lonely guy tonight knowing he has been totally shafted. I can see Bankier and co needing electric fences to keep the fans out by end of October.

The Celtic boards days are numbered and their ineptitude this window is the pivotal moment.
