Asset Management Day

739

You and I are old enough to remember the grief when a star player left to go to England.  Today, with Odsonne Edouard’s anticipated departure, grief is replaced by relief.  This is nothing to do with the player’s ability, he will be missed on the field, but success on the grass is determined by the astuteness in the Asset Management game.  If Celtic are to enhance their chances with the former, they need to optimise the latter.  Eddie has to leave with financial compensation coming the other way.

Whatever Crystal Palace pay, a significant portion will to go Paris Saint-Germain (widely reported as 40%).  We paid €10m when the player signed permanently in 2018, so although the money will have an impact on current and future trading, we will scarcely break even on the player, a sign that his value (€10m plus sell-on clause) did not appreciate during his time in Glasgow.

Ryan Christie, like Stuart Armstrong three years ago, is one I hoped we would be able to hold onto.  Ryan spent three years going nowhere (if you discount loans to Inverness and Aberdeen) before he transformed Celtic when coming on as a halftime substitute against Hearts at Murrayfield in October 2018.  Celtic started that season poorly with Brendan Rodgers unable to conjure a fix until a series of injuries gave Ryan his chance.  He played a significant role in rescuing Celtic’s season, and Brendan’s reputation, as they secured the Treble Treble and remained a key player in the subsequent treble and European campaigns.

Money talks and Celtic players listen when wages above £50k per week are mentioned (Edouard will earn significantly above this).  With only six months left on his current deal, I doubt we will earn much for Ryan, but the principle remains the same; churn them before they leave for free.

Filipe Jota and Georgios Giakoumakis are waiting in the tunnel, so the ‘F5 hours’ should be busy.

  1. Us vs the transfer window — has all the hallmarks of a Brendan Foster 5K race.

Slow start followed by a bit of action in the middle and a hang on until the line.

Was hoping for better — the headline numbers would suggest that we have made quite a lot of cash / profit from the players going out over the players coming in.

Looking very thin at the moment squad wise.

MF lacks grunt and heft relying now on JMcC to provide the aggression of a team single handed.

Looking very light at CB — BL may have to save us — and LB is still a problem if AR gets injured.

I fear that we may have clone LS to fill all our needs going forward.

Big ask to get the tech working in less than 4 months.

Not sure what the next few days will deliver regarding near misses and failures regarding player recruitment — AP / DMcK better have some tales to tell as we needed to do better than this.

Either that or AP is confident he can get the SW refugees up to speed pretty dam quick.

Remember when P 67 boasted about the great business it was to pick up these two exciting talents — or at least that was what PL told him to say.

Finally the board groupies have managed to get the band back together.

If this is their idea of success then I hope we never experience their understanding of failure — last season was horrible yet still they clapped.

OE = Gone but not forgotten / CP have gotten a bargain..

RC = erse wipe of guy who could have done so much better.

  2. Good luck to Odsonne and Ryan at your new clubs. Hopefully you will be treated by the supporters of your new clubs with a little more respect than you received by some of the supporters of this club

  3. Well that’s it.Never mind the window,my Patio doors have slammed shut.

I wish you all a good night,to ponder, what might have been.

  4. Celtic are still hoping to finalise a deal for Tottenham Hotspur defender Cameron Carter-Vicars before the window closes at midnight.

“ some of the supporters of this club” have been Celtic supporters for decades before those pair rocked up, and will remain so for decades after that pair have slunk off with their tails between their legs.

“Neil Lennon was not responsible for bringing Ajer, Calmac through, a very wide stretch of a fertile imagination would be needed there. Who are the etc, the likes of Ralston, Welsh?

No, Ange has done more for the Celtic academy bhoys first team progression in the last two months than Lenny did in his whole Celtic career including when he was at the Celtic academy.”

    ———————————–

It takes a lot to develop a player and take him from the academy to the first team. Very few make it and fewer still sustain the place. Lenny sanctioned the loaning of Calmac to Notts County – that definitely helped him reach the standards necessary and Ronny Deila reaped the benefit of that when he scored on his debut, 2 months after Neil left the club. He was still not an established first teamer and many of us considered him a jack of all trades, bits and pieces, type of player who did not thrive until he established Central midfield as his best position. Therefore, NFL, RD and BR were all hugely influential in Callum’s development.

Now- not everyone who gets loaned out does so with the idea of a return ticket. Calmac was one of those whom Neil was bringing back because he thrived at Notts County and that gave Ronny another squad option and gave Brendan a much more complete player.

Kris Ajer was signed by Ronny Deila but RD was gone vefore Kris started with us. He too was loaned out in his first season and in his 2nd and 3rd seasons under BR- he played 24 and 28 league games. Under NFL and John Kennedy, he played 28 and 35 times. Each of those coaches played a part in bringing Kris to the level of a £13m EPL player.

Tony Ralston made his debut in Ronny’s last month. He made 11 league appearances during BR and NFL management. Only Ange has been able to make him an effective player and only he, and perhaps, the managers of Dundee United and St. Johnstone can take any credit for his development.

in Neil’s first season- he introduced reserve players (not Academy boys) like Niall McGinn, Paddy McCourt, Thomas Rogne and Tony Watt.

In 2011/12, he gave Dylan McGeoch 8 games and Marcus Fraser a Euro debut but neither player established themselves

In 2012/13 Tony Watt got 29 league appearances, McGeoch appeared 15 times and Tom Rogic got his first 8 starts for Celtic

In 2013/14 his final year of his first spell, Amido Balde got 24 appearances, Darnell Fisher got 13 and Liam Jenderson debuted with 8 appearances

In his second spell of 2019/20, Stephen Welsh debuted under Neil as did Karamoko

Even in the disastrous losing the Ten year of 2020/21- we saw debuts for Conor Hazard, Karamoko got 5 appearances and Ewan Henderson got 3.

There is no doubt that Neil, like his mentor MON, favoured hardened pros and did not blood many. Neither did BR, when it comes to that. Ange, in contrast is able to sho that bravery without the pressure of the 10 and I am confident we will see a few more Academy bhoys establish than was usual under MON, WGS, NFL or BR.

You make that very point in your 2nd para above but that introduces a seperate debate.

AP is clearly giving more opportunities to academy boys than Neil did.

Neil’s record in that regard is however, no better or worse than most 21at century Celtic managers.

    Ange is the outlier here

  13. INIQUITOUSIV, if following on wasn’t stinking enough, I hope you catch the smell of your own drift.

  14. I really hope we don’t have the same luck as Liverpool last season when injuries to their central defenders caused them to play midfielders there, and their league challenge fell apart. If it happened to us, we’d have to play someone like Bitton. Oh! Hang on!

My initial point was that, unlike some on here, I believe Celtic players earn respect by their actions wearing the jersey, as opposed to blind idolatry for the act of wearing it.

Those pair sold the club short the past 18 months although I accept in mitigation the COVID situation will have affected OE.
