Asset Management Day

739

You and I are old enough to remember the grief when a star player left to go to England.  Today, with Odsonne Edouard’s anticipated departure, grief is replaced by relief.  This is nothing to do with the player’s ability, he will be missed on the field, but success on the grass is determined by the astuteness in the Asset Management game.  If Celtic are to enhance their chances with the former, they need to optimise the latter.  Eddie has to leave with financial compensation coming the other way.

Whatever Crystal Palace pay, a significant portion will to go Paris Saint-Germain (widely reported as 40%).  We paid €10m when the player signed permanently in 2018, so although the money will have an impact on current and future trading, we will scarcely break even on the player, a sign that his value (€10m plus sell-on clause) did not appreciate during his time in Glasgow.

Ryan Christie, like Stuart Armstrong three years ago, is one I hoped we would be able to hold onto.  Ryan spent three years going nowhere (if you discount loans to Inverness and Aberdeen) before he transformed Celtic when coming on as a halftime substitute against Hearts at Murrayfield in October 2018.  Celtic started that season poorly with Brendan Rodgers unable to conjure a fix until a series of injuries gave Ryan his chance.  He played a significant role in rescuing Celtic’s season, and Brendan’s reputation, as they secured the Treble Treble and remained a key player in the subsequent treble and European campaigns.

Money talks and Celtic players listen when wages above £50k per week are mentioned (Edouard will earn significantly above this).  With only six months left on his current deal, I doubt we will earn much for Ryan, but the principle remains the same; churn them before they leave for free.

Filipe Jota and Georgios Giakoumakis are waiting in the tunnel, so the ‘F5 hours’ should be busy.

Is Ali McCann the new John McGinn?

I’d never heard of him until yesterday.

You see Phil, this is what happens when you don’t watch other football much.I am going by the 2 Cup Finals, the Hun game from last season, and the 2 games against Galatasaray.Outstanding in them all.

That awkward wait for the first person to realise Cameron is only 6ft; 2in shorter than ‘looks too wee’ Welsh and 1.5in smaller ‘way too wee for a CH’ Starfelt

It’s not the height that counts,it’s how you use it.Ajer, could not jump at 6.4.Henke at 5.10,could out jump anyone.Anyway, think he is more Bobo-esque.I hope.

    ————————

Just a wee joke TB. A lot of folks on here are concerned about the height of our defenders.

i played RB a fair bit and am 5ft 6in. When high balls came in to me, I…..oh wait, forget that example😉

  3. Amazing that the Huns never lose any players in these windows – I thought Barisic was for the off for starters.

Nobody ever seems to want to leave which is astonishing.

    Their accounts will be interesting.

I don’t watch much other football.

I’ll watch Celtic on Sportscene then switch off and record Match of the Day to watch on Sunday morning.

(That way I can fast forward past all the pish analysis)

  5. Coneybhoy,

Think I used to play against you !!!!!!!!Was always scoring goals at the back post, and wondering why it was so easy.

  6. PHILBHOY

Glad to hear I’m not the only one who fast-forwards past the excrutiatingly boring match analysis on MOTD.

Ian Wright and Allan Shearer do my nut in.

  7. Big transition of players, would have liked a LB and McCann from St Johnstone, and rid of Ajeti, Barkas, but it was always going to take more than 1 Window to sort the mess out

I don’t think they have sold anyone of significance in their existence.

Meanwhile they have racked up £62m of losses, up to the end of June 2020 (only 3 month into covid). SInce then they have purchased Roofe and Hagi, then attempted a small share issue, which failed.

I’ve no idea what their plan is.

  9. Bada,

Think we need Ajeti for numbers and I just wonder if a system that fires crosses into a six yard box from Ababda, Forrest and Jota will see him flourish. Perhaps beside the big Greek…options perhaps?

He was never a No. 9 in the tranditional sense….

Anyway, trying to wear my hopeful pants properly today…

  10. Surely someone would have taken the Huns players at a particular ‘undisclosed’ price?

I’ve given up believing mad Phil’s assertions of imminent death and therefore necessary player trading. They are all in again to grab the big ECL prize money….

  11. 3 New Players coming to the club one is a dumpling from I doubt is a Celtic fan if the so called dumpling is as good as the last Spurs player that was on loan Ramon Vaga who as a centre half came up to score a few goals for us he Carter will do for me,We have to give these new boys a chance, not to criticise them before they kick a ball.Well now we know who along with Lennon we’re the ones that caused unrest at the. club Eduard,Christie,Ajmer, they downed tools allowing Sevco to stop us from going for 10 ,I will add Nitcham to the troublemakers.

  12. Some great posts so far this morning. More like editorials then mere posts

  13. Big W……….

Perhaps a clearer picture of thems come january?

I tend to agree with you tho’………..by whichever means, they achieve it the huns just focus on winning and beating us.

Perhaps we might learn something from them after all?

  14. Big W- Ajeti scored in a better league than this he must have something, possibly in our new formation he might come good 🤞

  15. I am happy enough at the end of the transfer window. I didn’t expect big name signings as I know they won’t come here for football or finance reasons. We work in limited circumstances. It’s impossible to predict success or failure as too many variables involved. We’ve taken a few risks as far as we can tell – James McCarthy out injured already is not a good sign but I’m not worried yet. Scales did well in a so-called lesser league, will he do well here? And we’ve given both long term deals. Others have performed well already and look up for it. We can hope al wil do well and support them, not denigrate them or dismiss them after a couple of poor showings and give everyone a chance. Scotsman had a good piece on confirmation bias or finding what you want to find, e.g. blaming Starfelt for ranger’s goal when in fact he was covering Goldson or whatever his name is and someone else was covering or not covering Harlander. There’s no point in blaming the manger for lack of coaching or failing to instill confidence in his players if the fans are not going to give players their support.

  16. I don’t understand we’re some Celtic supporters are coming from regarding Mc Cann at St Johnstone ,anytime I have watched him he just looked ordinary player ,

  17. !!BADA BING!! on 1ST SEPTEMBER 2021 10:35 AM

Pete- nobody wants their players, they would actively been trying to punt as many as they could

    ###

Or they have calculated that the money to be gained from winning the league makes it more important to keep their squad together.

  18. Go tell the Spartim on

I too skip MOTD analysis, Shearer and Wright are dire, but at least they were quality players, as for Danny Murphy (he looks like he’s from prison day release) and especially Jermaine Jenas, my word they’re rank rotten. I quite like Micah Richards enthusiasm and must confess I didn’t like her personality at first but Alex Scott is getting better, was good covering the olympics.

Why don’t we ban the BBC, what harm could it do, they have the cheek to “address” anti Irish/catholic racism ( though racism seems not to be in their big lexicon of words) when they are part of the problem, whilst not as blatant and vocal as Hun supporters their shows and prose are explicitly demeaning to the perceived catholic/Irish community (ie us). Stand up Kheredine yesterday, rather than mention Erividisie top scorer he mentioned he’d scored 1 goal in 6 caps (or something like that, can’t be bothered looking it up)

  19. Bankiebhoy1..

Good point fella. Nobody will gorge on jelly and ice cream more than me but I’m over the sensationalist stuff that we’re in touching distance of the stake through their coprse. As we’ve seen before, their malevolent hand means they also have a clear strategy of switcheroo that seems to involve hampden, the financial services industry and a long list of dodgy characters, including our board sadly. They’ll always exist in my lifetime. I just wish, as you point out rightfully, we’d break the bloody cord and focus on being the best forward-thinking european setup around. The rest will flow.

But it’s a blog so I don’t mind being 2.5% wrong ….. unlike SMSM who, IMHO, are 90% wrong (both factually and morally).

That’s not going to happen under the current ownership.

  23. The only problem with the window for me is that it is almost a month until I can get to Celtic Park to see the new team play !

Gutted I can’t make the Ross Co game but hoping someone can put on a 6-0 bet for me as we are apparently only really flat track bullies according to the BBC and most media outlets.

  24. The new recruit dominated set-pieces last season on loan at Bournemouth from Tottenham, winning the majority of his key battles when defending set-pieces.

A wee bit of stats on Our new CH.Otherwise known as”Big Dumpling”

  25. Go tell the spartim

It was the emphasis on the Spurs lads 6 loan spells and not on the guys achievements on those.

The 3 in and 3 out at Celtic as a final item on the sports news today. Not Celtic move on 3 unsettled players for good money and bring in fresh capable talent 2 from top level sides and all from top leagues and all with international pedigree.

  26. Apologies if already posted:

As the Hoops target success in the campaign ahead, Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou expressed his satisfaction with the club’s recent activity.

He said: “Everyone at the Club has worked hard on making really good progress in this window and I am really pleased with the depth of quality we have managed to deliver.

“I think the squad is in good shape for the challenges ahead and I look forward to get working as a unit with the whole squad together, as one, after the international break.

“While so many players have come in, I would also like to thank the first team guys who have moved on from Celtic, for their contribution to the Club.”

“Odsonne and Ryan are two players who have been fantastic for the Club over a number of years. They wanted to look at new opportunities, I am sure they will continue to have very successful careers and I wish them well for the future. I also wish Leigh well on his loan spell at Dundee, where I am sure he will get back into some important playing time.

  27. Ernie,

I know. What an absolute waste. Which of course means how far Ange is allowed to go will still have breaks on it to ensure the Huns remain in our lane…

  28. Part II:

Celtic Chief Executive Dom McKay is also pleased with the level of business the club has completed during the summer transfer window.

Having vowed to help manager Ange Postecoglou settle in not long after his own arrival at Paradise, Dom McKay highlighted the quality of signings the club has since brought in as he and the manager target success in the season ahead.

The Chief Executive said: “From the skill and experience the likes of Joe Hart and James McCarthy bring to the squad, to the flair of players like Kyogo and Liel Abada, this transfer window has been a busy period for the club with 12 new players joining Ange and our squad at Celtic”.

“We have strengthened the squad in all areas of the pitch, with international-level talent, and while naturally disappointed to see some faces head in the opposite direction, we wish them every success in their next ventures.”

  29. Morning all, confident our squad is now good enough to beat Sevco’s 11 men. Whether it’s good enough to beat Sevco’s 12 men is another matter.

  30. Ange is on the verge of quitting because he has been sold a pup from Dom who is really just Peters puppet.

I dont care what they say.

  31. You know why Ali McCann went to Preston for £1m. We didn’t want him. We were linked to him with no information and we were told he was available at £3m minimum. It was agent flying Kites.

We have 34 with 5 out on loan. That is plenty. we have 34 in B team, We also have Barkas, Hazard, Boli, Bitton, Connell, Henderson McInroy, Urhoghide and Shaw who will not feature unless there is injury crisis.

Its good we have got rid of most of the want aways. After last season they can not be trusted.

All in all Celtic have done well in this window
