Asset Management Day

739

You and I are old enough to remember the grief when a star player left to go to England.  Today, with Odsonne Edouard’s anticipated departure, grief is replaced by relief.  This is nothing to do with the player’s ability, he will be missed on the field, but success on the grass is determined by the astuteness in the Asset Management game.  If Celtic are to enhance their chances with the former, they need to optimise the latter.  Eddie has to leave with financial compensation coming the other way.

Whatever Crystal Palace pay, a significant portion will to go Paris Saint-Germain (widely reported as 40%).  We paid €10m when the player signed permanently in 2018, so although the money will have an impact on current and future trading, we will scarcely break even on the player, a sign that his value (€10m plus sell-on clause) did not appreciate during his time in Glasgow.

Ryan Christie, like Stuart Armstrong three years ago, is one I hoped we would be able to hold onto.  Ryan spent three years going nowhere (if you discount loans to Inverness and Aberdeen) before he transformed Celtic when coming on as a halftime substitute against Hearts at Murrayfield in October 2018.  Celtic started that season poorly with Brendan Rodgers unable to conjure a fix until a series of injuries gave Ryan his chance.  He played a significant role in rescuing Celtic’s season, and Brendan’s reputation, as they secured the Treble Treble and remained a key player in the subsequent treble and European campaigns.

Money talks and Celtic players listen when wages above £50k per week are mentioned (Edouard will earn significantly above this).  With only six months left on his current deal, I doubt we will earn much for Ryan, but the principle remains the same; churn them before they leave for free.

Filipe Jota and Georgios Giakoumakis are waiting in the tunnel, so the ‘F5 hours’ should be busy.

So we paid 9M for Eddie.

    We will receive 15.5M

PSG will allegedly receive 40pc of 6.5m meaning they will receive 2.6m and we will make 12.9M, a profit overall of 3.9M.

So for someone whose job is accounts based, how can you say we are scarcely breaking even?

You didn’t happen to be Barings Bank’s financial adviser did you?

  2. The Fraud demanded Eddy tae pair with the Moose before he decided he preferred Chinese tae porridge. Mibbees just mibbees that’s why there was a large percentage attached tae deal. Let’s not forget nothing happens without the Kaiser signing off on it.

  3. Is it possible that the January window will be the more productive one for us? Ange has stated he has looked closely at the Japanese game but that this is a bad time to try and move players out of the J League.

Montgomery has proved himself a decent left back although I wonder if Liam scales is also being considered for that role?

May not be a popular call but I would rather wait until January for another gem or two of Ange’s choosing than getting in an extra loanee just now. I think we have enough in the locker to get to new year in a position to compete for the league.

If there are rabbits being conjured from hats marvellous, but the Greek striker and the Portuguese winger will do for me if that is all we get.

Compare last seasons crop of signings to what we’ve seen so far from Kyogo, Ababa, Starfelt (not universally popular but he us better than we brought in last season), juranovic, Harte, with mccarthy and scales yet to feature and I think we are stringer. We are certainly more motivated and better organised.

    Should be a fun day…..

Usain Bolt could win the Olympics, live on McDonalds for two years and make a comeback beating 80-year old grannies.

He’d still be successful judging by your argument.

    ———————-

that is not a valid argument. havnt a clue how that compares at all.

while his PAST SUCCESSES are well his SUCCESSES.

then so too are ALL OF CELTICS PAST SUCCESSES still a SUCCESS

None of them are diminished in my eyes or to be less celebrated because of what happened last season.

The 5 year rolling strategy plan, failed to land a trophy for the first time in 11 seasons.

The racked up records are there in the annals.

  5. I think most of us all said that if Ange was backed he had a great chance of succeeding.

    It hasn’t happened.

Lost 2 central defenders, brought in 1.

    Lost 3 midfielders, brought in 1 .

Let’s hope we can hang in there until January, when Ange can get some of his players in.

  6. The busiest part of our season by far is now – two games a week at least all the way to January. Ange needs bodies now. If the line on here tomorrow is January then just like last January when we got fed the same line, the season could be beyond us at that point.

  7. RobertTressell

You raise a fair point but my concern with waiting to bring in quality additions to a threadbare squad is that it delays the recovery and Ange’s building process. I think we need at least 4 players in today AND quality additions in January if we have any hope of regaining our title.

P67 is clearly saying PSG are due 40% of the fee – not 40% of the profit.

    ———————————-

    Well he’s wrong.

They are due 40% of any money over 9M.

Then again, if he was briefed by compulsive liar lawwell…

The comparison is Bolt = Celtic in terms of wilful deterioration/downsizing

Im happy with the comparison and happy to allow others to judge.

The club is engaging in the usual transfer window nonsense of ‘one out, one in at lesser expense”.

The club had been ran into the ground over the last two years and by any reasonable standard was a complete bombsite when AP was appointed – I assume you’re not going to argue that point?

The club needs a significant rebuild and need multiple, first team ready, experienced players.

This is not good enough and the support are being shafted yet again.

You carry on cheering on the success, though.

  11. While I don’t think Christie saved BRs reputation, he certainly changed our direction of travel performance wise at Murray field and after for s while. There was some really boring, turgid and ineffective football under Rodgers at times. It is often forgotten or ignored. Great coach and good tactician but sometimes his plan A was as boring as f……

As I recall it, Christie, cal mac and James f really clicked around that time. It transformed us for a while.

  12. I hate to ask, but are our city rivals preparing the ‘we kept hold of our best players and it is like new signings’ narrative, or are there any signs of moves in or out of bigotsville?

  13. I can’t get the image of an obese Usain Bolt racing 80 year old grannies out of my head.

  14. ROBERTTRESSEL.

and without Scott in the team mid to front suddenly became a lot lot quicker than previous seasons. por cierto.

  15. Whatever we all may say about Eddie and christie the stats for both are VG…….hard to replace I’m afraid……the greek striker is another 2 million pop

your right, I am not going to argue with you.

One shambolic season with any amount of mitigating factors for the failures has not seen the PLC change any of what they believe is a proven successful strategy.

I keep asking you, what planned changes to that strategy should be put in place ?

Its a 5 year rolling plan, what does success look like in the coming 5 years ?

If I suggested, we win nothing this season, but improve enough that for the next 4 seasons after we win 4 trebles, would that be a success ?

Go on the floor is yours.

By tomorrow morning we will have one crocked CMF, short of CBs and LBs, and sold the manager a pup.

But the Huns are at the door, parading through the streets like fecking stormtroopers and we have £50+m in the bank.

    What’s not to like?!!

  18. I hate to ask, but are our city rivals preparing the ‘we kept hold of our best players and it is like new signings’ narrative, or are there any signs of moves in or out of bigotsville?

Was wondering the same. How many years does Porto need to sign Red Cards More or Less (less) ?

What happened to the £20m deficit money……..

  21. From last years squad

    forwards gone,. Klimala, Eddy, Griff.

3 in Greek ,Japanese and israeluii.

    Maybe Jota

Mikey Johnson also looks lost.. And Dembele out for a while.

RB – Lost 2 in Janauary. Got one in now

CH – One lost to long term injury. Ajer gone – one in.

Squad weeker though some better players.

But we need bodies “last week” according to Ange in June!!!

    ————————————————–

Can give you the benefit of the doubt and and say that you just typed the above on the spur of the moment and never thought things through?

We have a minimum 24 matches between now and the next window, a maximum 26.

    18 in the league.

There is a 40M bounty sitting for whoever wins the league.

Your argument means that we go into matches understrength in key position in nearly half the league games of the full season.

By all means sign players from Japan in the next window but strengthen the key positions now for who will augment the players brought in in January.

    The money is there.

    50M brought in this year.

    Nowhere near that spent

The club is in the black according to last accounts. Since they were published season books sold out and millions received in transfer fees, loanees back to their clubs and Scott Brown and Ntcham’s wages off the books.

We need a centre half as Jullien’s injury means we don’t know how he will recover, a left back as Scales is a project, a strong midfielder to help Callum as McCarthy’s run of injuries in the past mean he is a risk.

  23. is there no way we can try and off load some of our deadwood i.e. barkas , boli boli and a few others wondering about lennoxtown as part of todays transfer deals as in buy 1 get 1 free

  24. Really doesn’t take long for the worm to turn.

Patience is a virtue right enough.

Some posters would cause a fight in an empty blog.

The players going were gone long ago, no use to us or Ange, lets get some boys in that want to be here.

Sleepy goal against a poor team on Sunday and its panic. Csc again.

The squad is leaner but thats not a bad thing.
