Asset Management Day

739

You and I are old enough to remember the grief when a star player left to go to England.  Today, with Odsonne Edouard’s anticipated departure, grief is replaced by relief.  This is nothing to do with the player’s ability, he will be missed on the field, but success on the grass is determined by the astuteness in the Asset Management game.  If Celtic are to enhance their chances with the former, they need to optimise the latter.  Eddie has to leave with financial compensation coming the other way.

Whatever Crystal Palace pay, a significant portion will to go Paris Saint-Germain (widely reported as 40%).  We paid €10m when the player signed permanently in 2018, so although the money will have an impact on current and future trading, we will scarcely break even on the player, a sign that his value (€10m plus sell-on clause) did not appreciate during his time in Glasgow.

Ryan Christie, like Stuart Armstrong three years ago, is one I hoped we would be able to hold onto.  Ryan spent three years going nowhere (if you discount loans to Inverness and Aberdeen) before he transformed Celtic when coming on as a halftime substitute against Hearts at Murrayfield in October 2018.  Celtic started that season poorly with Brendan Rodgers unable to conjure a fix until a series of injuries gave Ryan his chance.  He played a significant role in rescuing Celtic’s season, and Brendan’s reputation, as they secured the Treble Treble and remained a key player in the subsequent treble and European campaigns.

Money talks and Celtic players listen when wages above £50k per week are mentioned (Edouard will earn significantly above this).  With only six months left on his current deal, I doubt we will earn much for Ryan, but the principle remains the same; churn them before they leave for free.

Filipe Jota and Georgios Giakoumakis are waiting in the tunnel, so the ‘F5 hours’ should be busy.

I’ve got news for you. Arithmetic is in fact a branch of mathematics, one of if not the oldest.

It is the study of numbers, from the Greek Arithmos. Ange will know that.

Now, it may be you are from a generation, like many on here, where you studied arithmetic, at primary level, then both arithmetic and mathematics at secondary, leading to separate qualifications, and this has led you to believe that they are separate subjects. One, arithmetic, is an important part of two, mathematics.

Now whether Paul67 has got his numbers correct, that, is a whole other question.

Notionally speaking there will be a plan, but can you see one from the way we operate as a club? We have been totally disorganised (as ever). The legacy Pedro.

  5. Julien wont be back till Xmas. The other 2 weren’t even signed as benchwarmers but as benchwarmers in the future!

What kind of plan lead you from Mowbray to Lenny to Ronny to BR and back to Lenny. I don’t see any consistency in approach there. Nevermind our signing policy.

I have watched PL’s basic wage jump by 500% – there’s a plan right there.

    I stand corrected.

Sadly I come from a 1970s school background.

I was blunt re P67 and should have taken into account that if he was told to say about ‘scarcely breaking even’ by lawwell in order to dampen fans expectation of buying the players required then not to take the facts given to P67 to post on his blog by the compulsive liar remotely seriously.

  9. We shouldn’t really concern ourselves too much with the Eddy sell on clause, that’s on the board not us.

The later TDD gets, the more likely loan deals materialise, would be nice to get a six foot plus defender with loads of quality but needs game time in a team that is always in focus. Ie Celtic. Finding that gem has been beyond us recently.

Heard a clip of uncle Tim Devine there.

His view appears to be that anti Irish racism and anti catholic attitudes are not a Scottish problem but purely associated with the club(s) playing out of ibrox.

I would have to disagree with him there.

  11. GARYGILLESPIESHAMSTRING

Depends on how you interpret ‘problem’

I agree that walking in Glasgow’s streets in large police protected groups singing racist songs is very much a Rainjurz peculiarity.

In the wider context the problem of anti Catholicism is not restricted to this new phenomenon of Rainjurz marches.

  12. What is to be done about the The Famine Song embarrassment?

Is Rangers FC doing enough to tackle the bigotry and anti-Irish racism among its support?

    I discuss with @GordonWaddell and @mstewart_23.

    @graham spiers

  13. A month or so ago, the negatonians were telling us that Shaw and Urogohide were all we were going to get and that we’d lose Eddy because it was all part of the plan to gift Sevco another £40 million of free money from the CL.

Since then we have had Furohashi, Abada, Starfelt, McCarthy, Hart, Scales, Juranovic and Giakoumakis come in. And there will be more, even if it is just a loan.

Now, it does not matter if these incomers are good enough or do a job for us, the initial view and assertion of the negatonians was wrong, totally.

We have brought in numbers and we have brought in quality and we have paid out a fair amount of money and yes, some will be “projects” becaue, no matter what we paid for them, they still have to prove they are good enough to displace the guy in possession of the shirt.

But I have seen not one, absolutely not one poster, stating “Don’t listen to me- I got it dead wrong. I knew I was just venting and I didn’t really mean it, but I was dead wrong about no more incoming. You would think I’d have learned my lesson by now but i’ll be back with the same pish predictions in the January window”.

I believe that, with proper coaching,, we have the players to wrest back the title at the first attempt

  14. bournesouprecipe

It would be nice if they could include someone from the Irish Catholic community in such a debate.

    Ah, well…

  15. Ah well, new boss same as the old boss.

We intend to come out of the window stronger than we entered it, aye, we sure have in the financial dept, defo not in the playing staff, big bonuses guaranteed all round again, and we have the audacity to laugh at thems, thems who were 25 points ahead of us last season and we have a weaker squad, albeit a better coach, but a threadbare squad, the way Ange wants to play we are an injury away from another crisis me thinks.

As many of you know, COVID lockdown prevented people in Scotland participating in communal worship …. there were significant restrictions that prevented people going to communal religious services or public prayer.

Canon Tom White took a personal action against the Scottish Government and his case was upheld, stating that the ban on worship and some of the restrictions imposed were illegal.

The time has come to pay the legal bill. We are still short and need another £25,000 so we are making one final push to see if we can bridge the gap.

Whit else dis yer prospectus say about Celtic’s role in the 5WA and intentionally crashing the club to keep the Manky Mob in the game?

    ——————–

It is not a prospectus, it is the Annual Report.

I can see what is wrong, people dont understand how the PLC , HAS TO operate in law.

They have to explain what the strategy is, and how they are performing against the KPI’s.

They do this by planning the next 5 years, adjusting to suit each year, but overall to meet the company objectives

It is not a social club run for the members benefits (or with the input of the 60,000 different opinions)

The 5WA and the demise of the manky mob has never been mentioned in any Annual report, that would just be silly. To do that would be challenged as not meeting your director responsibilities.

And I bet never ever recorded in a board meeting. These things need to minuted and on the record.

On reading all of that, I see the PLC operating exactly as they say they will in the Strategic intent.

Develop our own players via academy or trading to win trophies, while avoiding financial risks, paying dividends to the preference shareholders (the defacto owners), and trying to gain access to a new football enviroment, maximising all the income streams.

My biggest concern has always been the size of the board (not enough members) , the expertise of the board (all similar business backgrounds, btw they aint all saint als that is a myth) , the lack of diversity (not tokenism, but inclusion and varying skill sets, why not an academic ? tom devine ? a scientist ? Geoffrey Palmer ? Paul Elliot ? John Barnes ? Jeannette ? Canon White ? why not.

And the real big ticket item, a renumaration committee who are all part of the board. Payrises for MPs anyone ?

Now I await the aqusation of me being condescending and maybe patronising , followed by Lawwellite and Board lackey, none of which I am.

then I am sorry but it is the best explanation I can find is this

A PLC run for The majority shareholders while operating with the Legal Framework of a PLC.

Lets see what , if anything changes for Hearts and Motherwell, will they repeat the mistakes of their Single owner structrues of the past and run into debt and admin ? or will the supporter/owner now say, em wait a minute we cant afford to spend, we need to befrugal, prudent, ALIVE.

    Good post.

I’d heartily support your call for patience.

There are five posters in particular on here who (rightly or wrongly) I have mentally bookmarked as universally negative.

Their contributions suggest Celtic brings absolutely no joy to their lives.

They are also prone to “lashing out” type posts as soon as something goes wrong.

They hold onto grudges too as if dragging up past events will somehow change them.

Of the five, two are regular posters, two are occasional, one rarely posts.

    All five on today.

Think I’ll take a break from the blog for six hours or so …. and come back at the business end (literally) of the day.

My view is that the hun behaviour and the OO are the visible manifestations of attitudes that are widespread and deep rooted throughout Scottish society.

Tom Devine’s comments about it being an issue associated with a football club is doing the cause of the Irish and Catholic communities no favours as it glosses over the true size of the problem in Scotland.
