Asset Management Day

739

You and I are old enough to remember the grief when a star player left to go to England.  Today, with Odsonne Edouard’s anticipated departure, grief is replaced by relief.  This is nothing to do with the player’s ability, he will be missed on the field, but success on the grass is determined by the astuteness in the Asset Management game.  If Celtic are to enhance their chances with the former, they need to optimise the latter.  Eddie has to leave with financial compensation coming the other way.

Whatever Crystal Palace pay, a significant portion will to go Paris Saint-Germain (widely reported as 40%).  We paid €10m when the player signed permanently in 2018, so although the money will have an impact on current and future trading, we will scarcely break even on the player, a sign that his value (€10m plus sell-on clause) did not appreciate during his time in Glasgow.

Ryan Christie, like Stuart Armstrong three years ago, is one I hoped we would be able to hold onto.  Ryan spent three years going nowhere (if you discount loans to Inverness and Aberdeen) before he transformed Celtic when coming on as a halftime substitute against Hearts at Murrayfield in October 2018.  Celtic started that season poorly with Brendan Rodgers unable to conjure a fix until a series of injuries gave Ryan his chance.  He played a significant role in rescuing Celtic’s season, and Brendan’s reputation, as they secured the Treble Treble and remained a key player in the subsequent treble and European campaigns.

Money talks and Celtic players listen when wages above £50k per week are mentioned (Edouard will earn significantly above this).  With only six months left on his current deal, I doubt we will earn much for Ryan, but the principle remains the same; churn them before they leave for free.

Filipe Jota and Georgios Giakoumakis are waiting in the tunnel, so the ‘F5 hours’ should be busy.

  1. SFtBs @ 4:52 PM,

A month or so ago, the negatonians were telling us that Shaw and Urogohide were all we were going to get and that we’d lose Eddy because it was all part of the plan to gift Sevco another £40 million of free money from the CL.

No one said that did they? You made it up didn’t you? It’s a ridiculous notion and then you go on to shoot down the ridiculous nation you just made up.

What was the point of that post?

Then you have got fholk agreeing with your made up nonsense, how does that work?

But I have seen not one, absolutely not one poster, stating “Don’t listen to me- I got it dead wrong.

Why don’t you admit you got it “dead wrong”?

Apologise to me and others who got it dead right

Then your pontificating might look slight less nonsensical.

    Hail Hail

Yes, it’s one of those things we’ll never know.

Slippy said he only wanted players that wanted to play – even benching their prized asset and the result was a limited but unified team.

Ange has said he’ll only talk about players who want to be here and is not in the business of trying to make wantaways happy.

Lennon knew there were players that didn’t want to be there – a strong manager says “they go or I go” but he insisted on playing them and the results were disastrous.

I admit there were other factors at play too but he identified a problem at the time and didn’t rectify it. Maybe he wasn’t allowed….who knows?

  3. @ CELTIC40ME on 31ST AUGUST 2021 5:12 PM

“We have replaced our two worst performers from that day.”

While they did not perform well on the day, they were not the only ones – Turnbull and Abada were competing for that prize. Moreover, they are two of the more experienced and quality members of our squad.

At present, the squad looks far too light in quality and quantity to compete in four competitions.

If we lose Christie, we need to sign a central midfielder. Christie’s versatility will be missed – in the last couple of games he has played at 8, 10 and on both wings. Loaning a single Portuguese 19 year old winger won’t cut it.

Our LW will consist of the 19 year old Portuguese winger, 19 year old LB/LW Montgomery and injury prone Johnston. That isn’t good enough to take on near enough 3 games a week for the next 4 months.

In the middle – each of McCarthy, Soro and Bitton all play the same position and by the looks of it, Ange prefers CalMac in that position in any event. So we have to fit Rogic, Turnbull and moving CalMac forward into 2 positions for the next 4 months.

Looking at Rogic’s stats, he has only managed to play 40 games plus (42) in one season since BR arrived. We can therefore expect an injury at some point this campaign. Not only that, but generally he cannot last 90 minutes, nor can he play 3 games a week because of his knees. Also, Turnbull has proved himself ineffective in the last two games against quality opposition and, as ever, you always want competition for places, as opposed to guaranteed starters through lack of options.

At LB we have Taylor who is the weakest player in our first 11. We have needed a new LB for two years now. Surely, we must have been scouting this position and treating it as a priority. Montgomery/Scales can be utilised as back up, but again, Montgomery may already need to play further up the pitch.

At CB we are one injury to Starfelt away from playing kids or Bitton. Jullien is months away from starting.

In addition to the two due to come in, we need a LB, CM and CB; CM would be the priority for me.

I think the above is fair comment, but happy for you to contest the points.

The frustrating point for many is that we had cash in the bank coming into the summer window. We have received more funds than we have spent and have cut the wage bill significantly based on Brown, Ntcham and the loan player departures, but yet the squad is this thin.

Yet again, we are holding funds back for no reason. We have lost away to Hearts, the Danes, AZ and Sevco. CL money is up for grabs and we seem content to flip a coin on this season.

  4. i used to work for a very large engineering company in the Glasgow area.

as a young graduate, I was awkwardly implored by my line managers not to mention my team or religion when we went into a senior meeting. I was outraged but also sympathetic to their plight, i.e., if the top guy got annoyed , he would delve much deeper into the data we were presenting and make a load of extra work for us.

In the end the guy did ask my name (which is not a giveaway) and as my first name is one of the Apostles, he did get sarcastic about how many Marys, matthews, luke and johns there were now in he comnay. i looked at my boss preparing for my explosion but i let it go.

they thanked me but as i saw it , they could have taken the opportunity to talk at that meeting away from me but they didn’t.

Apart from the sectarian stuff, a very toxic, bullying culture in that site. Literally the biggest hardman became the foremen, then manager, then senior staff

    that was 1990

  5. Looks like we’ve got an inform striker looks a robust sort of guy.

I trust Ange’s judgement so hope he hits the ground running, he’ll need too.

Welcome to Glasgow Celtic Giorgos Giakoumakis, at least we’ve replaced Eddy’s penalty taking prowess…

    Hail Hail

  6. Direct experience of Bigots.

My granny , whom I lived with, was an Orangewoman, as was my mum, and many of their family. I was the first catholic born into that side, and my granny was effectively “let go” from her friendships and shunned.

Her father had been a grand-master, and I still remember going to his house, he was always kind to me, and the twins who came after me, we talked about the old fella only last weekend.

As time went on, barriers came down some, and my grannies cousins who lived near us kind of let her back in, but obviously not to the organisations. She wanted nothing to do with them after that anyways, made of strong stuff old Annie.

So I was in some of their houses often, my grannies sisters were good people, one of them is still living at 103.

One of her cousins was the Head of the Joiner shop at Scott Lithgows, I thought he liked me.

I was top of the class for woodwork, I had no ambition other than to be a joiner.

Annie says, I talked to Joe, you have an interview, the letter will come soon. You will be ok she said.

That intake to the training centre was the last big apprentice hire for the yards. 8 1st year joiners.

I scooshed the interview, taking along my olevels certificate, and a school prize letter from st stpehens.

You will know before the end of the summer, the start date is late august.

I got a letter within 2 days, Unsuccesful. Laters the 8 who did, all non catholics, boys brigaders, port rangers and gourock yakkers.

Joe came to the house nervous to talk to Annie, he dis say i tried but dont ask me to do anything like that again.

  7. New Celtic forward Giorgos Giakoumakis, who pens a five-year deal at Parkhead, says he is “delighted to commit” his long-term future to the club.

“Celtic is one of the world’s great football clubs with the best fans around,” he tells the club’s website.

“It is a club I have admired for so long and it will now be an honour to wear this famous jersey.

“To know the manager wanted me so much to join Celtic is really humbling and it makes me know I have made the right choice.”

  8. CHAIRBHOY on 31ST AUGUST 2021 6:16 PM

Usual suspects said those exact things, as they always do, at every opportunity, predictably.

SFtBs @ 4:52 PM, has it dead on.

  9. ok, Edward and Griff out Georgios in. How is this “adding quality depth” to the team.

Ange asks board ignores! …..unless we sneak in a couple of loans

  10. STEBHOY on 31ST AUGUST 2021 6:32 PM

The 2 leaving, didn’t want to or can’t play for us.

Giorgos and Kyogo who came in do, and appear to fit the system better.

    You are welcome😉🍀

  11. SAINT STIVS @ 5:43 PM,

Do you know that Allan MacDonald was a 1.5 Million a year executive with BAe, before joining Celtic as CEO on 200,000 per annum?

He was replaced by another top executive Ian Mcleod.

It is interesting that DD felt the need to replace these top operators with a middle management Accountant who didn’t have the experience for the role.

We have watched his salary and responsibilities soar as our football club floundered and sank.

    Hail Hail

  12. It’s pointless going through our line up player by player and having a moan and coming up with a massive list of new players ….

… Ange will attempt to mould a team and pattern of play together which gets away from the fannying about we have watched for the last while ….

This will take 18 months , we are 2 months into this …. still it would be good to pull a rabbit out the window with a few quality surprises

…. Funny no-one rates any Hun player to pay anything

  13. as a follow up to that, i went back to school in the august, then chucked it in after 3 weeks, my mum couldnt afford to keep me, and needed the dole money.

5 months on the dole, 1982, i dependent on the old orangewoman to give me money to go to the games. that nearly ended the day she was on the bus and seen me at a republican march in the port town.

but anyways a loud knock at the door, old dennis kelly, of moville, our round the corner neighbour, lived in the port for 30+ years and spoke like just came off the boat. Nan, is your stephen in, there is a job in the job centre YTS in Blairs the joiners, aye, get his coat and i will take him down.

and that was the beginning of working now for 43 years (bliddy hell) through opportunity, education, being better than those who relied on handshakes and masonic coins.

economic parity sure, overtaken many aye.

  14. I remember when Neil Lennon was a player and he passed the ball sideways and back. A bit like his management in the end. Now he wants to come over as an expert in the media.

Reminiscent of BIG JOCCCCK out Chewin The Fat.

Ah told yeez AH SAY AH TOLD yeez what yeez all said an ahm right.

I’ve noticed the Lawwellite clique all do this variation of a theme; deliberately misconstrue the concerns of genuine Celtic fans then label them as “negatonians”.

  16. martim – irrelevant mate. Ange asked for depth , we have less strikers and a heavy playing schedule. Need to get a loan deal or signing done in the next few hours imo

  17. Well

    here we go

we have the backbones of a squad which can

-have a go at EL teams

-grind out results away in the spfl

-work out how to beat the racism denying organisation

-entertain the ghirls and bhoys at home

    – have a go at winning the league

    good luck ange

    …..

It took me 6 home games to see Neil pass the ball to the opposition, a very good player in his day …. Last year didn’t work out , time to move on , pointless directing barbs at Neil particularly given that he had the shit kicked out of him by the Huns

  19. Rolling stone @18.21 – all good points indeed.

I do not know what’s more galling Sevco somehow not selling any of their “prized assets” or Celtic looking unlikely ( yes I know there is 4 hours to go),

to add real strength and quality to a our squad.

We’ve lost Klimala / Eddie and LG and replaced them with 2 , so we are one short upfront.

CH – Ajer / Duffy / El Hahmed replaced with Starfelt and a youngster from Sheffield Wed and Scales –

That worries the hell out of me.

Also looks likely Taylor is going to be out LB for the whole season!!

4 hours to go – Get your finger out please!!!

Surely we are. not going to get the “we tried to get a few numbers in” they’ve only known for 12 months

That major incomings were a necessity.

  20. Snake Plissken on

Hope a defender at the least comes in tonight above the Greek striker and the winger from Benfica.

If not January will be another time to improve.

On your last point , we are in fact up 2 , as the 3 you quote we’re not contributing

  22. MARTIM1980 @ 6:27 PM,

Well, I don’t read CQN as diligently as I once did but feel I’ve read enough to keep up with the transfer window debate.

It has for the most part been interesting and constructive.

We all knew Celtic wanted to sell Edddy, how much we’d have to lower our price and would he compromise on his personal demands sufficiently to get the deal done? That was the issues

No poster said Shaw and Urogohide would be our only signings this window.

Maybe you could give me an example? Outwith a random troll who was flying under the radar I don’t think you can.

Ange has stated he wanted several quality signings in.

To play his brand of football he needed two quality options in each position – minimal.

I saw many say that the Board would not back Ange.

Nothing I read suggested we would stop at the two Sheffield Wednesday prospects.

SFtBs @ 4:52 PM, has it dead wrong.

It would be very easy to prove otherwise do that and I’ll admit I was wrong like I have done on so many occasions in the past.

    Hail Hail

  23. @ EKBHOY on 31ST AUGUST 2021 6:56 PM

    That argument doesn’t hold water.

Rogic and Ralston didn’t contribute last year, but have this year. The same could apply for those who have now exited. It is about squad numbers and quality and we are down on last year in various departments.

  24. DANDAN

I hope your’e not waiting on a left back in the next four hours as you’ll be disappointed IMO. We have four in the queue Taylor, Montgomery, Scales, and Boli ( stinking the place out ) Juranovic as per Sunday can also play there.

  25. Hendry off to Club Brugge for £8.8m

Let’s how there is a PSG type add on of the 40% variety.

If not then we’ve really screwed up there.
