Asset Management Day

739

You and I are old enough to remember the grief when a star player left to go to England.  Today, with Odsonne Edouard’s anticipated departure, grief is replaced by relief.  This is nothing to do with the player’s ability, he will be missed on the field, but success on the grass is determined by the astuteness in the Asset Management game.  If Celtic are to enhance their chances with the former, they need to optimise the latter.  Eddie has to leave with financial compensation coming the other way.

Whatever Crystal Palace pay, a significant portion will to go Paris Saint-Germain (widely reported as 40%).  We paid €10m when the player signed permanently in 2018, so although the money will have an impact on current and future trading, we will scarcely break even on the player, a sign that his value (€10m plus sell-on clause) did not appreciate during his time in Glasgow.

Ryan Christie, like Stuart Armstrong three years ago, is one I hoped we would be able to hold onto.  Ryan spent three years going nowhere (if you discount loans to Inverness and Aberdeen) before he transformed Celtic when coming on as a halftime substitute against Hearts at Murrayfield in October 2018.  Celtic started that season poorly with Brendan Rodgers unable to conjure a fix until a series of injuries gave Ryan his chance.  He played a significant role in rescuing Celtic’s season, and Brendan’s reputation, as they secured the Treble Treble and remained a key player in the subsequent treble and European campaigns.

Money talks and Celtic players listen when wages above £50k per week are mentioned (Edouard will earn significantly above this).  With only six months left on his current deal, I doubt we will earn much for Ryan, but the principle remains the same; churn them before they leave for free.

Filipe Jota and Georgios Giakoumakis are waiting in the tunnel, so the ‘F5 hours’ should be busy.

  1. And to manage your expectations, those who’ve played first team, from our academy are now first team players.

Exactly how a football team with an academy works. Promote your players up the ranks.

It appears to be happening more, Ange prepared to give them a chance and for that, I’m delighted at the prospect 😊🍀

  2. Bournesouprecipe

Let’s hope Scales is up to the task as he’s a totally unknown quantity.

Montgomery looks decent and I’m hopeful about him.

Boli is just a complete disaster all round.

Bottom line is we’ve gone from KT to GT at left back.

Quick reply as yours is full of contradictions.

Don’t keep up on CQN but you are sure there weren’t posts like those mentioned.

You challenged they didn’t take place. You go read back and you evidence.

  4. Nuts to think that in 8 months we’ve sold players for more than every other club in Scotland put together in their whole entire history.

What an embarassment for Sevco that they can’t sell 1 single player despite begging clubs to buy any one of their players…. I suppose that’s what happens when you buy players on HP because the selling club are desperate (Hagi, Roofe etc).

While they did not perform well on the day, they were not the only ones

You’re purposely missing my point again aren’t you :))))

Im not assessing the different performances in the team I’m suggesting that we’d have had a better chance of winning on Sunday with them out of it and their replacements in

I think we’d have won with Kyogo through the middle, Ange admitted it was a mistake not putting him in there instead of Eddie from the start. Not that he can anymore but we would t have seen Eddie playing ahead of Kyogo in the middle had he stayed

Sunday told me we won’t miss both of them, Eddie certainly, as badly as some seem to think. I think I we’ll be better without him starting in the middle.

I’m not answering the rest of your post, past experience suggests it will have very little relevance to what I was talking about so I can’t be bothered reading it

    I’M SORRY

  6. @ LAXALT on 31ST AUGUST 2021 7:12 PM

There is a point in there, but it does also sound very much like the Balance Sheet Cup. Sevco stopped TIAR and we haven’t beaten them in 7 games.

The fact we have sold players for big money will be scant consolation if we lose the league.

  7. ADI_DASSLER @ 6:32 PM,

    Quite…

    SQUIRE DANAHER @ 6:44 PM,

Yes, the chap that not so long ago was giving us lectures on how to properly debate

labels fholk that don’t agree with him “negatonians” then misrepresents what they say.

    Top debating – Not

    MARTIM1980 @ 7:08 PM,

No, no, no, that’s not how it works, at all.

If someone states something as fact, then is called out on it, it is up to them to back it up isn’t it? It’s what I do.

My post is full of contraindications – then it will be very easy for you to state what they are and back that up.

Or are you another rhetoric guy?

    Hail Hail

  8. I’m off to binge on Macdonald’s and race a Granny

No problem. Always a good way to duck an issue you have no answer for.

  10. MARTIM1980 @ 7:20 PM,

Apologies for calling you a rhetoric ghuy.

You’re not even close are you?

    Hail Hail

I’m sorry but I read the comments too, predictions, as usual, that the 2 free transfers would be it……negative posters assuming the worst. The same that wet themself if a game doesn’t start off us being 5-0 after 10 mins.

If you challenge the poster and accuse them of lying the onus is on you to prove that.

  12. It is funny that some of the rudest folk on here are the ones whose points of view have become untenable over time, but are too proud to change course, so they just double down.

In good company with Donald Trump.

    @ EKBHOY on 31ST AUGUST 2021 6:56 PM

    That argument doesn’t hold water.

Rogic and Ralston didn’t contribute last year, but have this year. The same could apply for those who have now exited. It is about squad numbers and quality and we are down on last year in various departments.

    …..

Squad is /was bloated …. We need to give some of the young fellas a run … folk that did not contribute last season when they leave that is a positive thing it’s good for morale …. Less can be best and promote from within ….

  14. There are some who seem to think that at this moment in time Celtic are awash with money – I can assure that this is not the case and there will be much surprise when the yearly figures are published this year.

Season ’20/’21 was a big loss maker, as was the tail-end of 19/20 – all due to Covid. We lost c£6m in the interims up to December ’20, and will have lost much more from then till June ’21. Those losses would have wiped-out all of our bank reserves

No doubt someone will calculate the surplus of our outs and ins during these times. Big money for Frimpong & Edouard (offset by substantial paybacks) – big money for Ajer. Relatively small amounts for Klimala, Hendry…etc. Remember these fees will be drip-fed over 3/4 seasons. In total maybe £30m net?

We spent c£20m in transfers and loans prior to ’20/’21 – and we have signed so far this season:

    Hart

    Kyogo

    Abada

    McCarthy (signing on fee)

    Starfelt

    Juranovic

    Urhoghide (singing on fee)

    Shaw (singing on fee)

    Scales

    Greek striker

    Maybe c£23m?

You do the math…..as they say?

  15. We have over used the loan system recently and it husnae worked out the way we wanted.

For once I’m hoping we bring in an imposing CH either on a long contract or a Season long loan.

We are gonnae be stretched Big Time as the amount of games we are gonnae play will be very testing.

Delighted seeing young Adam playing so well in such circumstances. I reckon we have Top Quality under the hood.

Callum is a fulcrum of Celtic and is a Superb fitba player. I totally agree with him that the Celtic Support should remember him for all the Good things he done for the Hoops.

  16. Chairbhoy @ 6.16

“No one said that did they? You made it up didn’t you?”

The answer to the first question is yes they did

The answer to the second is no.

Therefore the rest of your reasonings and deductions fall

Now, if we’re going to talk about presenting false information- what about NFL only brought James Forrest in from the Academy?? Do we discount Calmac and Ajer etc; as there were other managers involved as wel as NFL? That sounds like the same thinking as all the bad signings were Lawwell’s and all the good signings were the managers (except, of course, NFL, who was a dud apparently)

  17. PETEC on 31ST AUGUST 2021 7:37 PM

You’re right that the loan market hasn’t worked well but neither did the purchasing market – our recruitment has been rotten full-stop.

I wouldn’t want a situation like we had last year when we had four or five loanees starting on occasions but I wouldn’t be against one or two to fill some gaps until January.

  18. Since jan 2020 celtic have removed/ sold 20 players.

Rb – Elhammed, frompong, John Joe kelly

    Lb – laxetil

Cb – Hendry, Hajita leo, ajer, duffy

    Cm – ncham, brown

Am. Shved, Enyannousi mo, oxoflex, Christie (possible)

Forward – Bayo, Griffith, harper, Klimala, EDUARD (possible)

During that period most would agree frimpong, ajer, enyannousi and eduard have contributed to some degree. Christie has done alright in about 3 games this season. My view we may have had a lot of players but it’s hardto argue they contributed much over the past 18 months.

    HH

  19. ERNIE, if you think the league will be won by holding onto players in the final year of their contract, desperate to leave Celtic, you’re wrong.

Is there time to resuscitate the Fletcher deal?

He is young and fits our so called model, then of course maybe Ange doesn’t fancy him.
