Assoc-member club allege inappropriate SFA involvement

946

In a universe close to you, one side of a football club boardroom battle thought it would be a good idea to undermine the other side by accusing them of leaking company information.  The allegations of a leak [at Newco Rangers, in case you were unaware]were blazoned across The Sun today, who were shown “a copy of explosive minutes from the board showdown at Murray Park where Gers power-brokers voted to sideline (chairman, Malcolm Murray)”.

This is cringe worthy.  At what level of humanity does leaking [highly confidential]boardroom documents about an earlier alleged leak appear to be acceptable behaviour?

The Sun report the minutes from last week’s board meeting record:

“The SFA mentioned to the acting chief executive (Craig Mather) that the Rangers board situation needed addressing as the SFA understood information was leaking from the chairman.

“Given the concerns about confidentiality [no laughing now], credibility and professional conduct and the impact on regulators, a motion was proposed to remove Malcolm from the position of chairman and as director of the company following the completion of the investigation.

“It was decided that Malcolm should not attend to any duties in the meantime and would not be involved in the direction or detail of the investigation.

“The resolution was passed by a majority of shareholders.”

The campaign to blacken Malcolm Murray’s name has been underway for some months but you can ignore that, there are three points from the above worthy of note:

“Malcolm… would not be involved in the direction or detail of the investigation”.  Despite having the minutes, The Sun fail to clarify which investigation is being referred to, the on-going investigation by Pinsent Masons and Deloittes, or an investigation into Malcolm Murray’s behaviour.

As it was proposed to sack Murray as a director on completion of the investigation it’s unlikely the investigation is into his own behaviour.  Sentencing is usually reserved until after guilt is established.

The possibility that the minutes indicate Malcolm Murray will not be allowed to be involved in the direction or detail of the Pinsent Masons investigation renders the exercise pointless.  The investigation into links between Green and Whyte, with consequences for SFA membership, was at the insistence of Murray.  If the persons who removed him are now controlling the scope of his investigation, that investigation is moot.

The other interesting point is that the “resolution was passed by a majority of shareholders”.  I’m pretty sure this was a directors’ board meeting not a shareholders meeting.  It’s a curious comment to make its way onto the minutes.

By far the most concerning comment to be made on an SFA associate member’s boardroom minutes was:

“The SFA mentioned to the acting chief executive (Craig Mather) that the Rangers board situation needed addressing as the SFA understood information was leaking from the chairman”.

It is no business of the SFA whatsoever if a club chairman talks about its business outside the boardroom, the allegation here is of completely inappropriate behaviour by the Association, which makes it our business.

Who at the SFA is involved in this, what did they know, when did they know it, who told them and who did they speak?

Time for some leadership from the SFA board and some proper journalism, or would everyone rather play their part in the Great Football Swindle?

We are all hurting, maybes hurting is not the right word, we are all upset, annoyed, disalusioned [sp] at what is happening to the game we love, to the club we love, and make no mistake, our club are suffering, not with them being out of the league, but we are suffering cos of their cheating .

I am hurting, I am hurting cos I can’t do anything about it.

I implore those who can do something about it, to do something about it.

Yup. See above. How can the gambling business as a whole never mind William Hill in particular stand back and take bets on Scottish football?

An implied threat of taking supporters custom elsewhere is likely to grab their and the SFA’s attention as any boycott of William Hill puts the seven figure sponsor money the SFA get at risk.

It also makes the SFA a bad sponsoring bet for other sponsors.

We are not going to get justice through rules or courts and the law so we use the only thing that matters to football and the SFA – money!

Boycotts of games are unlikely to happen. The last time the CSA called for a boycott many, in spite of the aknowledgemnt that we are being misled, simply refuse not to support the bhoys on the park. Even the manager, who has more reason than most to dislike the SFA and what they stand for, asked supporters to turn up.

That is not to say banners etc do not have any effect but this is about more than given expresswion to our anger, it is about giving supporters a lever by which they can make the SFA more accountable.

There are a number of sponsors but William Hill is particularly apt given that

    a) they need punters to believe they are not betting on a game fixed by one clubs need to survive

    b) in their CEO Ralph Topping ex Chairman of the SPL they have someone who knows how SFA machinations have affected clubs and

    c) proper governance is right up there as one of William Hill’s top beliefs.

    d) Hill have seven figure deal with the SFA and 300 betting shops in Scotland.

If we can get the message across to William Hill that continued sponsorship of the SFA will damage their business we might finally get some action as well as setting a standard that future sponsors will want assurances of BEFORE sponsoring the SFA.

So, the SFA informed the Sevco Board that there was a leak at the board room level ?

Why would the SFA care about a club’s board room leak ? Unless they were worried about being compromised themselves. You would think some clubs in Scotland would be requesting some clarification if indeed the SFA were venturing into an area where their presence would be unusual to say the least. Come on! This is an embarrassment for Scotland for Scottish history. Can Scotland fix it? Hope so. Its getting to be downer even for Sevco fans. Could be we are watching the establishment in the process of de-establishing itself.

  20. The problem with calls for a boycott of individual games is that it is a sanction that is called for far too often and for the most spurious of reasons and as a result, it has lost its value.

Every time a footballer or a club official utters a few words that are deemed to be in any way supportive of the Huns, there follows a dozen calls for a boycott of Celtic matches at that club’s ground.

Almost very mention of the name Campbell Ogilvie is accompanied by a call for a boycott of the Scottish Cup semi-final and now the Final.

It will soon get to the stage where, if an Aberdeen player stands on the toes of a Celtic player, there will be calls for a boycott of Pittodrie.

It gets truly ridiculous when the boycott-callers start telling others who don’t jump on their bandwagon that they “need to grow a pair”.

  21. Truly Ridiculous….?

Here is a wee list of the truly ‘Truly Ridiculous’…

The lack of critical thinking and questioning among the SMSM.

The embarrassing quality of Scottish refereeing at home, then exported to Europe by High Heid Yin Hugh Dallas.

The disciplinary decisions of the SFA.

The lack of enforcing rules by SFA.

The attempts to redefine league structures to accommodate a deid team with no audited accounts.

The MSM journos canned laughter at Super Pallys inane press conference ‘jokes’, and soft ball questioning.

BFDJ being paid to do what he does.

The disappearance of The Mint from all media coverage.

    And finally….

Criticizing people for calling for a boycott (when nobody has), at the end of the season….

When boycotts are in fact the only weapon the average punter has to combat a market monopolized by arrogant clowns (as was proven at the beginning of the season, when fans expressed themselves collectively).

    Truly Ridiculous …..

    And finally…

    Truly…

How much the SMSM and SFA are a microcosm of the bigger world of media PR, Politics and BS…

That most swallow hook line and sinker.

  22. mungolian bhoy on

A suggestion on another site was to boycott one of the SFA’s biggest sponsors – William Hill, the bookie shop company. No inconvenience to the boycotters as there are lots of other companies usually available. This would be a particularly effective action. I do not think this action would take too long before results came about.

    The Second Coming

    BY WILLIAM BUTLER YEATS

Turning and turning in the widening gyre

    The falcon cannot hear the falconer;

    Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;

Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,

The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere

    The ceremony of innocence is drowned;

The best lack all conviction, while the worst

    Are full of passionate intensity.

    Surely some revelation is at hand;

Surely the Second Coming is at hand.

The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out

When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi

Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert

A shape with lion body and the head of a man,

A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,

Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it

Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds.

The darkness drops again; but now I know

That twenty centuries of stony sleep

Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,

And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,

Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

  27. I wasn’t criticising calls for a boycott per se. I was making a point about its overuse to the point of it losing its currency.
