I think the Atalanta manager’s words lost some sense in translation:-
“In Venice we had facilitated to have unlocked the game immediately, which did not happen to us this evening. I had never seen Celtic so perched and closed, in terms of consistency we had a good game. We lacked quality.”

Loved that tonight. Loved being so wrong.
Great atmosphere in stadium.
Fans were magnificent. Despite the usual stewarding and policing shambles.
Really great engagement with Atalanta fans also.
The team were heroic. To a man.
Amazing how players like Scales and Trusty can play like in a formation they played in for other clubs and country. Low block and defending heroes.
Pity to see Feyenoord and Zagreb win but good to see Young Boys lose. Overall we have a chance. Weird to see Leipzig next 3 games v Celtic Inter and Villa and they are on 0 points. It is must win for them in 2 weeks. Despite their domestic strength.

We rode our luck in the first half but still defended with great courage. Our second half performance was fantastic and the whole team should take great confidence from this. Hopefully this confidence will help the players take greater responsibility of the ball when in possession and not give it away so easily.

Thank God it wasn’t Aberdeen we were playing the night as their manager would have changed his tactics at half time and Brendan would have still been standing on the touchline holding his Playstation controller thingy.
A 0-0 should have been viewed as a bad result for us tonight given the disparity in resources between the clubs.
But given the deliberately steered Celtic PLC regression of Celtic as a European stock club since the Lawwell and Desmond balance sheet era 2004 became the focus of the club and their utter reluctance to deal with Celtic fans being cheated by Hun EBT scammers.
But the PLC did sleekitly go along with the same club lie ticket pricing trap played out on unsuspecting Celtic fans, to cover up Rangers FC dying, then given the foul stench of backdoor corruption that’s passed off as just another day in Celtic.
Much better to be the black sheep than as part of that stuff.

Atalanta are just the second team on record in the Champions League (from 2008-09 onwards) to have 20+ shots (22) and 50+ touches in the opposition box (54) and not score a goal, along with Paris St-Germain against Borussia Dortmund in last season’s semi-final second leg (30 shots, 50 touches in the opposition box).

“The blog comments prior to the game were – what – 70% couch, Meldrew and soilage-related ?
So some of us did see a positive result as possible.”
I may have been first to joke about hiding behind the couch. I would say however that I always thought a positive result was possible, just highly unlikely if Brendan did not adapt and heed the lessons of PSG/Barca/Dortmund; and his pre-match comments hinted that he would not change and would keep the high line, high press approach.
Thankfully it was a bluff and he changed approach, if not personnel, massively from Dortmund away. We defended deeper, sometimes 9/10 in the box and looked to break when safe without over committing. All quite sensible given the level of opposition and circumstances and all some of us were hoping for – a bit of pragmatism.

No worries, didn’t take it as a dig just that I don’t know any Celtic fan that thought a result was not possible – just most recognise it was highly unlikely had we went with our usual SPFL game plan as per Dortmund.
As you say, some BR teams in the EPL played differently against Man City away etc so we know he can be pragmatic. Hopefully we get a balance between the two approaches in our next home game as Leipzig look a dangerous proposition despite there results to date in the CL.

Burnley 78 made an excellent point last night when he said “Amazing how players like Scales and Trusty can play in a formation they played in for other clubs and country. Low block and defending heroes.”
Celtic CHs, domestically, are accustomed to acres of space in front of them. I have always thought Scales looks particularly uneasy when he gallops forward and then gets a nose bleed when he crosses the half way line and has to make a telling pass to keep the forward momentum going. He did it once last night and immediately lost possession and left us scrambling for cover as Atalanta poured forward.
For the rest of the night he was a rock. As were Trusty and KS. Valle had me a bit nervous with his positional play, he was popping up on the right wing at times . In general, it looked like he had been instructed to play closer in to Scales and Trusty rather than tight to the winger (Bellanova). Maybe to reduce the risk through the middle and limit the danger to crosses being thrown in from the wing?
It was a heroic effort all round, I was only hoping to avoid a heavy defeat.
Interesting to know what people thought of Engels performance. He is young and will improve but are we expecting more based on the 11 million fee?
glendalystonsils on
What happened to all this talk of the team only being able to play one way? According to quite a few , it would take months of practice to change our playing style and ,as for the manager , he only knew one way to set up the team anyway.
I think a lot of people underestimated both the team and the manager .
Darwin on
Extraordinarily pleased with last night’s outcome – as welcome as it was unexpected.
Brendan has given a special mention to Trusty and Scales and rightly so – it will probably avoid the need to rush CCV back into the squad. The manager also made special mention of Trusty playing so well whilst on his ‘wrong’ side.
I wonder if it is beyond the realms of possibility that we might see a back three operating in certain games in the future. That would of course mean going to a 3-5-2 set up and leaving out a recognized winger.
Schmeichel(Sinisalo) CCV, Trust, Scales- Johnston(Ralston), Valle(Taylor) can get down the flanks – Engles(McCowan), Hatate(Bernardo) McGregor covering the middle – Khun(Maeda), Kyogo(Idah) up front. Nawrocki, Welsh, Palma and Yang make up the rest of the twenty-two.
Perhaps we might sign the LA midfielder Mateusz Bogusz in January to complete the jigsaw – he could be
bracketed with Callum. I’m sure we could get some money for Nawrocki, Holm, Lagerbielke and Bernabei to cover most of the reported £8m asking price.HH
