11 vs 11 was going to be really tough.
Should have gone with 3 at the back & 5 in midfield to start with.
Simeone et al put the ref under major pressure ref (harsh) red card.
Some big picture decisions ref personnel changes – also played a role in worsening the result.
BBC website a bit over the top – real joy there tonight apparently. Not a good look for an impartial broadcaster.

Many posters make that point but it leaves me baffled for two reasons:
1) How do we use that money to make a CL difference? ie how much would we have to spend on individual players (and how many of them) who would be LIKELY to make the required difference;
2) Imagine we actually DID spend the required big millions, Who would be willing to come to the SPFL?
I would genuinely like to be educated in this matter but that learning will have to take place tomorrow.

Celtic in the world’s most uncompetitive league.
Lamentable abuse of VAR set the scene and it’s now prevalent in nearly every game, making football almost impossible as the spontaneous spectacle it’s supposed to be.
Athletico and more officialdom succeeded in convincing a red flag from 2015 referee, that Daizen Maeda had kicked their player when even a yellow looked harsh.
If it wasn’t bad enough with VAR, Celtic still had classic Euro nae luck to rely on, with the obligatory ‘wicked deflection’ past Joe Hart’s forlorn dive, that was started with a forlorn punch.
Peaked at disaster, things then got worse as Athletico scored again and it was game over , except we’d still to watch the second half and Celtic’s inevitable unravelling.
Brendan Rodgers started the strongest possible side he could, La Liga, Serie A, Eredivisie to Pot 4 as Scottish Champions is cavernous. One or two ‘pure kwality’ signings wouldn’t have changed the outcome, and may or may not have altered the scoreline.
Hail Hail

Was at the game tonight and it was just the same old movie we have witnessed many many times.
First goal looked like a poor defensive header by cal mac after or before ( can’t remember) JH poor clearance and then it’s 1 -0 with a few mins gone.
Maeda is offski soon afterwards and game is a bogey.
Two really pivotal things I’ve taken from this is
1- The fans were so scummered by the inevitable that at least 50% left when the third went in and even at HT there was a wave of fans going.
Can’t blame them as there was a massive feeling of
Disappointment and here we go again another doing !!
2- if the management can’t see that we lack physical presence at LB CM and front three positions then I must be losing the plot.
The amount of challenges / second balls we don’t win is good damm awful.
Pathetic really. We invite so much pressure on ourselves as we can’t defend / win tackles / headers.
It’s been like this for 3 years and we somehow get away with it in the SPL but in Europe it’s just embarrassing.

The game totally turned after Maeda went off. Any ball to the right and he was into it whether he should have caught it or not. Fullback did not have a clue how to deal with him. Then, Maeda chases a ball he shouldn’t get and ends up getting sent off. At first I thought the Athletico players were doing their utmost to get him a yellow. Then Red. Listen, in Scotland we need to play as they do in Europe, no run through brick wall shite and Scottish (tough guy, usually hun ref) lets it go. That said, red card on Maeda was harsh. Second half… 😱
