Attacking change looks more effective

163

Saturday’s win over Dundee Untied was as close to a perfect afternoon for the champions as we could hope for.  Remarkably, we picked up no injuries, despite some tasty challenges from United players.  Arne Engels in particular was targeted.  The absence of Paulo Bernardo leaves us light in the middle of the park, especially during this period of two games a week.

Adam Idah continued his scoring form, that’s five goals in six games since Kyogo left.  Prior to then, neither Adam not Kyogo were scoring with any regularity.  Kyogo took 13 games to score his last five goals for Celtic and Adam’s fallow patch was even longer.

This is a small sample size and we cannot rush to conclusions, but the slight change in Celtic’s attacking options looks to be more effective.  Could it be that defenders had figured out how to mark Kyogo?

Tomorrow’s opponents, Bayern Munich, earned a hard-fought point away to second placed Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday evening.  The result was celebrated like a win by Bayern players, who were fortunate not to concede on several occasions, including when Jeremie Frimpong hit the crossbar.

Munich are not quietly confidence of winning the Bundesliga and progressing into the next round of the Champions League.  They are eight points ahead in the league with 12 games remaining and they have won 17 and drawn four since their last home defeat in the Champions League.

That came at the hands of PSG in an empty stadium during the Covid season.  You need to go back six years to their last home defeat in front of fans in Europe.  So they are due another one, right?

  1. Not knowing how good Bayern are at home is one thing. But, we all should know our own away record & the fact we have not won a European knock out tie in 20 years. This ain’t Bodo or Copenhagen we’re facing.

  2. Kieran Tiernery will become Celtic’s highest earner when the 27-year-old Scotland defender completes his summer transfer from Arsenal, with his wages dwarfing current top earners – captain Callum McGregor and centre-half Cameron Carter-Vickers. (Football Insider)

  3. saint stivs – i wouldnt be very surprised if that was bollox – dwarfing ? maybe someone trying to stir it up a wee bit ?

  4. Saint Stivs

There is a handful of people who know what Kieran Tierney’s wage will be next year and a small amount who will know the wage structure within Celtic Park to make any sort of comparison with players already under contract; none of whom would give this type of information to the ‘Football Indier’.

If you can’t win on or off the pitch try and sew a wee bit of disharmony where you can seems to be these so called journalists’ aim.

  5. Statement from Celtic FC:

We have been informed today (Monday) by the local authorities in Munich that a memorial service will take place in the city centre following the tragic attack last week which saw more than 30 ınjured and a mother and two-year-old child lose their lives.

The service will take place at the Dome (Frauenkirche) in the Marienplatz area and we ask that our supporters are aware and mindful that this service is taking place at 6pm this evening.

    Thank you for your support.

  6. following on the back of the hearts penalty claim, we have the berkovic story and now the wages claim…some things never change

just waiting on the next star wants away, star doesnt want to sign, BR wants away, huns could have signed this guy, huns player worth 20M stories (and a paedo story to be thrown in too)

    I appreciate your view.

To be clear I have attended most of our away ties in Europe this past 30 years and so I am well aware of our away record. Through bitter first hand experience.

Likewise I follow our opponents and watch every match they play on tv and enjoy visiting their stadium. I do understand their home record.

I also understand cup football and recognise the fallibility of bigger teams in games over 90 minutes.

I also don’t see Bayern as the finished article. Nor do their support. They will be another great team in time.

Of course the percentages are against us. Personally I would rather travel with hope in my heart than fear.

It would be a very boring world if we all thought alike though.

Only surprise is that this particular story has taken so long to surface. It was certainly widely known back when BR came out with his comments about the fans singing for KT etc.

I would have thought they would have piled in on it then. Pity though as I seem to be in a growing minority of fans of wee Greg. That said the Palace lad really does look a top player to be fair. Pity he is not a bit cheaper as a back up utility option next season.

How would anyone know if it was real or not?

It seems feasible in places – so can FMgr and FIFA wages – but accurate?

I doubt these things are public record; if that info was available it would be valuable to agents so would not be freely available IMO.

Also, any list with Kyogo as an “active” player in our squad is not very accurate to me.

I can’t remember the details but I think ICT’s appeal was successful and the player made the final line up after appealing the 1 match ban? Or did they just delay it until after?!

I can only imagine the appeals panel congratulated him on his great save and wished him well for the final.

Far be it for me to tell you or anyone else to abandon hope. Where there’s life…

It’s just that I find talk of ‘a puncher’s chance or better’ to be over egging things. We’re operating someway above our weight division tomorrow night. Like you, I’ll be hoping too.

  12. I watched the Saturday night game against Leverkusen, Bayern looked to be sitting in for the draw and not really fit looking, but still Leverkusen should have scored 2, if we can get behind them and quick balls into the box we can score, obviously they have loads up options upfront all of whom are dangerous we have seen what they can do at Celtic Park but I’m sure Celtic will give a good account of themselves especially if Bayern are as heavy legged as they looked. Think 90minutes think 120 minutes you just never know, hope we are given a fair crap of the whip with officiating, we are due a break from them.

While I agree with you it’s tempting to give it a real go tomorrow night and go out with all guns blazing, I don’t think we’ll adopt that approach.

I don’t think any of our fans, including me, have the stomach for another European hammering. I don’t think any of our players fancy being on the wrong side of a PSG, Barcelona or Dortmund bludgeoning either. Those days must be consigned to the past.

I think Brendan will play it exactly like last week with a few tweaks (eg Harry Kane being marked at the back post) and try to keep it at 0-0 until the last 15 minutes and then try to nick a goal that would take it to extra time.

I wouldn’t want us to make them angry by scoring too early. If you remember in the first round of games, Zagreb were leading 2-0 at half time in the Allianz. Bayern scored 9 (NINE) 🤣 second half goals to win 9-2. Ouch! I don’t want anything remotely like that.

Schmeichel, Johnston, CCV, Trusty, Schlupp, Engels, Callum, Reo, Maeda, Jota, Idah

If things are close on 70 mins, bring on Kuhn and Taylor/Scales

  16. Non story.Berkovic is an Israeli. No questions need be asked.Maybe someone has gone seeking his opinion?.

We have to go for it tomorrow.Kuhn. Maeda, Jota.Did anyone expect Kuhn to hit the net in the first minute?.If you don’t buy a ticket.

It’s even more sad to hear Celtic fans saying ‘he is one of us’ and ‘he gets us’. Yes he will for 50 shekels.

As i said in last blog B78,once in the media, all opinion is subject to edit, clicks count, ignore the likes of him and McGoon for Celtic narrative, believe the evidence you watch week in and out, season after season, that is far richer amd deeper.

There are a few things i could say bout the ‘waitintobetelts” so called reporters, they dont have inside tracks now, they are just laughable, lost in no narrative land

It was actually an attempt at humour Greg Taylor regularly gets the ‘ short ‘ treatment on CQN.

FWIW pound for pound he has over 200 games and is a fantastic signing for Celtic, especially in the inverted role BR gets him to play so well. Never lets Celtic down and gives 100% as a model pro,

With regard to his earnings it’s reasonable to assume he would be on less money than some Celtic players who signed from bigger better leagues, that pay higher wages than Kilmarnock.

He’s due a rise IMO and he’s quite right to hold out given his level of service for one last big pay day type contract. I hope it’s at Celtic but reckon there will be suitors who snap him up because there’s no fee in summer.

‘Football Insiider’ are among the least likely to have any details of private contract negotiations at Celtic or any other club for that matter.

  24. Talk of keeping it tight, and going for it after an hour are all well and good but then you remember the first 4 minutes at Villa, or the two goals that Bayern scored, or that other game in Germany a few months back . . .

Our defence is liable to mistakes and unforced errors which tend to get punished by CL teams. Atalanta perhaps being the only notable exception.

I guess that is why we will start, as always with 3 up front and hope we can take our chances.

It has a high scoring game written all over it.

    0-0 it is.
