Attitude for Tynecastle

2311

I watched Hearts batter Pat Fenlon’s Hibs into submission at Easter Road last month.  They are not a good team but they have elbows and commitment, often the key resources in a football game.  With our interest in the League Cup and Europe curtailed, and the league title a sure thing, it is enormously important that we remain in the Scottish Cup into the New Year.

Attitude is the most important attribute for Celtic this weekend.

Things you don’t expect to do when you start blogging: I took four calls from journos yesterday asking if I knew a Celtic fan prepared to go on record as an IRA supporter!  I don’t, for the record, not one, so no one else should bother checking.  Lack of support for that organisation and, where support exists, an awareness that representing yourself as such, is not inconsequential, will explain the dearth.  Just as it’s not inconsequential when you represent your club.  I can’t see many inviting the consequences.

I also got a call yesterday and a faxed copy of a contemporary Celtic View (yes, a fax) from a fan who was beside Jock Stein when he went into the crowd at Annfield that day in 1972.  It was all very cordial, of course, no one argued with Jock.

Jock was at the height of his powers.  Five years from the European Cup win, two from his last final and four months since losing a European Cup semi-final on penalties, he had yet to lose a league as Celtic manager.  His comment in the View, “The Wreckers are chanting about things that have nothing to do with football” was respected, Celtic fans went back to football matters.  But this was 1972.  News from Ireland was despairing.  Rangers fans (and according to newspaper reports, Hearts fans) were chanting “UDA” without censure, Celtic fans eventually retorted.

This is all sooo last century, apart from the consequences, of course.

Sharp focus for Sunday…

I can’t recall who it was but somebody posted some other examples of political protests that had brought censure from UEFA. One of them was in support of Greenpeace.

Personally I think UEFA are wrong but you can’t accuse them of inconsistency or singling Celtic out. They have made it very clear that political protests are not allowed.

I think they’re wrong to take that stance but I guess that’s what their sponsors have decreed.

Can’t say for Holland but in this country criminal charges are defended at the cost of the accused (or legal aid) and there is no claim for costs in the event of acquittal.

My £70k had to be borne by me but my arbitration was on a loser pays costs or costs follow the event as it is known.

So win or lose the buckets will have to keep going and benefit concerts by Billy No’Well etc need organised now IMHO.

Excellent post, well said. However, despite knowing all this beforehand, the current board were all voted back on unanimously.

I’m looking for a little advice for a friend.

He works for a large company in Glasgow and was required to attend a Meeting with the company’s HR advisor regarding comments made via a social network after Tuesdays champions league match.

Naively he posted a humorous comment along the lines of we may be out of Europe but at least I’m not a hun.

HR dept received a complaint from another member of staff and have intimated that the term hun is offensive and sectarian.

If you could spare anytime / effort on building a response for him that would show the term not being sectarian it would be greatly received.

CELTIC fans who unfurled a banner calling Rangers fans “huns” walked free from court after a three-day trial.

Green Brigade members Daniel Ward, 23, and Daniel McCorgray, 22, both of Glasgow, were charged with breach of the peace aggravated by religious prejudice at a Celtic v St Mirren game in August 2010.

Their banner showed Hoops boss Neil Lennon outside a flaming Ibrox with the slogan ‘Huns FC’ on the main stand. Another banner said: “Let’s go to war.”

The pair were granted legal aid as the court heard complex legal arguments in the trial.

But Sheriff Alayne Swanson took just 20 minutes to return a not proven verdict last week at Glasgow Sheriff Court.

Ward’s lawyer, ex-Celt Gerry Britton, said as no-one had complained there was no breach. He added: “The charge tried to link two banners but they were separate.

“Our argument was that the word “huns” may be none too pleasant, but is not a religious comment.”

Ireland midfielder Aiden McGeady has been dropped from Spartak Moscow’s first team for an unspecified period for failing to heed instructions, coach Valery Karpin said on Friday.

“Yes, McGeady was suspended from training with the first team for not complying with my instructions in training and matches,” the Russia international Karpin told reporters.

“The rest is our internal affair.”

Local media reported McGeady, capped 63 times by Ireland, has been criticised by Karpin for poor form and his performance in Spartak’s 1-0 loss to city rivals CSKA last Saturday.

Several Russian newspapers said the 27-year-old winger would be allowed to play only in Spartak’s reserve team and would leave the club in January.

“All of us were surprised to see the Irishman on the field and asked him what happened,” a reserve team’s player told Izvestya newspaper on condition of anonymity after Friday’s training session.

McGeady joined Spartak from Celtic in 2010 on a four-and-a-half-year contract for a reported fee of around £9.5m.

Spartak, who are third in the standings with 33 points from 17 matches, three points behind leaders Zenit St Petersburg, take on Volga on Sunday.

  23. I think what really annoys some Celtic fans is that political acts are allowed in football so long as it is in keeping with the established narrative.

It wasn’t that long ago FIFA let England wear poppies on armbands despite their rules regarding such displays.

Howitzers on the pitch ? no problem, a H banner and all hell breaks loose…Some consistency would be nice.

  24. Dontbrattback regarding nazi subjugation – that was indeed where it ended up but it started with alienation and dehumanisaton. Both of which are well underway in Scotland.
