Attitude for Tynecastle

2311

I watched Hearts batter Pat Fenlon’s Hibs into submission at Easter Road last month.  They are not a good team but they have elbows and commitment, often the key resources in a football game.  With our interest in the League Cup and Europe curtailed, and the league title a sure thing, it is enormously important that we remain in the Scottish Cup into the New Year.

Attitude is the most important attribute for Celtic this weekend.

Things you don’t expect to do when you start blogging: I took four calls from journos yesterday asking if I knew a Celtic fan prepared to go on record as an IRA supporter!  I don’t, for the record, not one, so no one else should bother checking.  Lack of support for that organisation and, where support exists, an awareness that representing yourself as such, is not inconsequential, will explain the dearth.  Just as it’s not inconsequential when you represent your club.  I can’t see many inviting the consequences.

I also got a call yesterday and a faxed copy of a contemporary Celtic View (yes, a fax) from a fan who was beside Jock Stein when he went into the crowd at Annfield that day in 1972.  It was all very cordial, of course, no one argued with Jock.

Jock was at the height of his powers.  Five years from the European Cup win, two from his last final and four months since losing a European Cup semi-final on penalties, he had yet to lose a league as Celtic manager.  His comment in the View, “The Wreckers are chanting about things that have nothing to do with football” was respected, Celtic fans went back to football matters.  But this was 1972.  News from Ireland was despairing.  Rangers fans (and according to newspaper reports, Hearts fans) were chanting “UDA” without censure, Celtic fans eventually retorted.

This is all sooo last century, apart from the consequences, of course.

Sharp focus for Sunday…

  1. I found it interesting that Neil Lennon was quoted as saying he was looking to buy from within the British leagues again. As other have said, we look as though we have wasted £5m plus wages on Pukki and Balde. Would Billy Mckay have been a better bet at the start of the season? Never seen him play but hos goalscoring record seems to point to him being … well a goalscorer. Instead we paid £3m (reportedly) on another non goalscoring forward and £2m (reportedly) on Balde.

If we are working to ceilings and selling on at a profit. Surely McKay at what

£700k at most would have been a better bet than those two.

Gauld seems a no brianer but I don’t think we will go for him.

Stevie May I like and he seems to have a football brain.

If we lose Sammi, what price Ikechi Anya?

Not signings that would set the heather alight but they seem to be a better class than the ex Hibs policy we had before. I’d go with these guys over someone we have never heard of who is a poject.

  5. As someone said after Tuesday night on here – when things ain’t going well your next game is your most important one.

This is a big, big game.

Hope his selection works, because it’s a tough one to change if you need to go to the benches.

Composure from our guys is crucial .

    Calm, intelligent heads please.

We have just had a week of berating our manager for losing with a gung ho selection against AC. I don’t think there is a unified view from the fans anymore.

I am close to advocating an X Factor fan vote on team selection so we can sack ourselves as selectors when we fail and then get younger fans to pick the team. After we’ve sacked everyone under the age of 5, we can get the family pets to pick the team :-)

    Tally bhoy ,

I know you were being facetious but if Calvin Miller is only 15 he shouldn’t be in the ground let alone on the bench with that bunch of hammer throwers who ,lets face it , really don’t like us.

I post this picture every time we play Hearts at Tynecastle. Just a wee reminder. I hope NFL has it pinned to the wall.

  8. Similar approach to the Ross County match with the same midfield four. The early play in that game was a bit stodgy before it started going Celtic`s way. Come on the Bhoys!

I despair for the direction of what was once a superb blog with many differing viewpoints aired discussed analysed all in a spirit of genuine debate and mutual respect. Now regrettably it seems to be dominated by some who demand tolerance from others as long as its in a form acceptable to them and reflecting their views. Deviances are not to be tolerated..

Are we afraid of conflicting views in case they may change our own?

As one who went through a lengthy correspondence with the BBC and the BBC Trust appeal process re Cup Final day and the BOTOB I am puzzled as to why anyone would not want Pat Nevin to answer questions on the issue.

  12. Can’t understand the team selection. Surely Boerrigter needs games. And we need creators of chances. Was hoping for a big victory to cheer us all up.

I’m going to have to trust Neil on this one.

Growing up in Knightswood, I was always aware that Clydebank was a rebel town. Since moving to live in Dalmuir, that perception has been enhanced. It truly is a very Celtic minded area. Was the abundance of industry in the area, the reason for the original Irish influx. I live at old tram terminus in Dalmuir. The Irish diaspora tend to have large communities, where the tram’s terminated.

    A good, well considered, post.

The last couple of weeks have been painful, but the seeds were sown by some many months ago.

  15. Cautious team selection. Don’t see Commons and Stokes as runners up front, and we would need to get our midfielders coming through and playing in front of them. Will be another test for us today.
