In the early years of our re-emergence as a ‘proper’ football team under Martin O’Neill, Celtic were patronised by the suggestion that they ‘don’t play friendlies’, largely as a result of Martin’s ability to win games against teams from south of the border.
That comment is seldom aired these days, as for many years, Celtic have stretched their muscles in friendlies without worrying too much about the score. Gordon Strachan’s teams would lose the meaningless games with regularity but would largely win the important qualifiers which followed. So much so I’d probably feel uncomfortable watching Celtic apply themselves too much when it didn’t matter.
We will get a good measure of how match fitness needs to improve ahead of Champions League qualifiers in two weeks when we face Ukrainian aide, Sevastopol, tonight. Ukrainian football is one of the most sought-after properties in the game at the moment; the Russians have been making amorous overtures to the entire league, as they hope to build a super-league by joining up with the Ukrainians. I’m sure Celtic officials will have an active interest in the subject ahead of the game.

Googybhoy, if thats true then they are doing what they should have done from the outset, pay players ok money and put them on a 3 year deal. The players they have brought in should run away with the 2nd div , Hartley won it with a budget of £200k so they say. The worm has turned, so many footballers out there looking for contracts and are on free transfers. Look at League of Ireland a 2 year contract is a rarity and most players are signed for the season only. So reasonable money but longer contract is more appealing to players in my opinion, which brings me to our situation..
In 2011/12 turnover was £52m, last season 2012/13 we added £31m for CL & attendances, £6m Ki , if we get £11m for Vic & £6m for Hooper then the turnover will have nearly doubled, (dont have figures for Europa) it puts us in a very healthy position to attract good players.
Although it goes against our new business plan you might find that some of those who have won nothing down in England and have been made wealthy from the game might
be tempted by CL and winning some medals.

The endless money continues to be spent at PieBrox with Durie coming in, how much is he on, can’t be less than £40k would be my guess. They are acting like they are a top European club not one in the lowest realms of Scottish football. I cannot help wonder how Charles Green was getting a reputed package below, it beggars belief that he got the same as a bonus for winning the 3rd division:
Green is revealed to be on a salary of £360,000 per annum with fellow directors Imrin Ahmed and Brian Stockbridge getting combined salaries of £550,000 plus expenses. Five other non-executive directors are drawing a salary of £40,000 a year plus expenses taking the boardroom bill to way over £1m without a ball being kicked or bill getting paid.
There are figures to show from Auldheid that Directors salaries and expenses are coming to £2.5m this is utter madness for a Second division club, Alloa won the same with a reputed £200k budget (i bet their directors do it voluntarily for the good of the club). Will the management team on £1m+ thats £3.5m that should be no more than £0.5m straight away more than enough. Why hasn’t McCoist and the rest of the managerial team taken a huge hit, he is reputed to be the best paid manager in Scotland. Many of the directors are wealthy in their own right , why are they sucking their club dry, at this rate there will be nothing of the carcase left? They have less credibility with financial institutions, little or no banking credit facilities, suppliers will be nervous after what happened before and want money up front, not to mention clubs that The Rangers will be buying from in the future. That leaves me to deduce that no one at the club shows any vision, if Hearts can slash all salaries up to 50% to survive what makes them any different, Is it arrogance that thinks lightening can’t strike twice!
