That comment is seldom aired these days, as for many years, Celtic have stretched their muscles in friendlies without worrying too much about the score. Gordon Strachan’s teams would lose the meaningless games with regularity but would largely win the important qualifiers which followed. So much so I’d probably feel uncomfortable watching Celtic apply themselves too much when it didn’t matter.
We will get a good measure of how match fitness needs to improve ahead of Champions League qualifiers in two weeks when we face Ukrainian aide, Sevastopol, tonight. Ukrainian football is one of the most sought-after properties in the game at the moment; the Russians have been making amorous overtures to the entire league, as they hope to build a super-league by joining up with the Ukrainians. I’m sure Celtic officials will have an active interest in the subject ahead of the game.

I think it was Fergie who said that Celtic don’t play friendlies, and I always thought it was intended as a compliment. I also think it was based on a reputation that predated Martin O’Neill.
That all changed under Gordon Strachan with the lowlights being the borefest at the Ricoh arena and the choreographed pantomime that was Shearer’s testimonial.
Not well received by the traveling support as I recall.

if hooper and victor are for the off surely it makes sense to get it done asap. would like to see more academy bhoys getting more of a chance this season. against the idea of bringing in more players unless they are dead cert starters (quality over quantity every time)
good to see celtic investing in the team (2 new young players), in the stadium (wifi, new elevated disables section, family stand etc…) and in the supporters (price reduction, cheaper child tickets etc…)
hopefully by the end of this season I will be able to walk up the avenue of hero’s, go into the celtic superstore and museum before going for a drink and bite to eat in the café. thereafter a we walk into the stadium to celebrate being Scottish champs once again.
if we have the money (C/L participation and player transfer setc…) that money needs to be used to take celtic in the right direction. seems to me celtic are doing more right than wrong going by this pre-season.

Thought alot about that and surprised it wasnt tried more, izzy did threaten a few times last season to get back to his best.
Im one of those who usually doesnt like right footers at left back or vice versa .
However i rate mathews very highly and lustig so we need to try and include both.
