Attractive Ukrainians

828

In the early years of our re-emergence as a ‘proper’ football team under Martin O’Neill, Celtic were patronised by the suggestion that they ‘don’t play friendlies’, largely as a result of Martin’s ability to win games against teams from south of the border.

That comment is seldom aired these days, as for many years, Celtic have stretched their muscles in friendlies without worrying too much about the score.  Gordon Strachan’s teams would lose the meaningless games with regularity but would largely win the important qualifiers which followed.  So much so I’d probably feel uncomfortable watching Celtic apply themselves too much when it didn’t matter.

We will get a good measure of how match fitness needs to improve ahead of Champions League qualifiers in two weeks when we face Ukrainian aide, Sevastopol, tonight.  Ukrainian football is one of the most sought-after properties in the game at the moment; the Russians have been making amorous overtures to the entire league, as they hope to build a super-league by joining up with the Ukrainians.  I’m sure Celtic officials will have an active interest in the subject ahead of the game.

No injuries, please, you can forget about the score.

Delighted to hear Roy Keane is coming up for the Celtic Charity #19 game for Stiliyan Petrov’s Foundation on 8 September. Stan played with some timeless Celtic heroes (Roy’s 13 games doesn’t give him enough material to qualify for this accolade) in his seven years at the club; my money is on the event selling out (ticket details at bottom of page) as they are confirmed one at a time……

    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Starry,

I’m overweight 93 kilo, my weight goes up and down. Although i’m overweight i’m still fit. Go out for an 8km run every second day. Believe it or not the run isn’t enough for me to lose weight.

I tried a diet a few weeks ago and it was working……went on a night out and messed it all up. Starting again tomorrow. If you do this diet the soup isn’t to bad.I also put in mushrooms and used chili sauce to flavor it up at the end. The weight was coming of really quickly.

My old dad who will be 89 in a couple of weeks was diagnosed with type2 diabetes some 15 years ago – he takes a pill twice a day and has an insulin injection every night. Goes for a check-up twice a year.

In 1999 he was fitted with a pacemaker to combat an irregular heartbeat, and a couple of years ago had a new model fitted – he was in and out of the hospital in a couple of hours.

He is regularly given a list of dos and donts – foodstuffs – but most things in moderation are fine. He eats a lot of fruit and veg, fish and white meat but little red meat or pork.

He still has an incredibly sweet tooth, but has cut down on that over the years. As he says sometimes – ‘Ffs I’m nearly 90 and I’ll be deid soon anyway!’ He loves Tunnock’s snowballs!

He’s cut down on the drink, but he still has has the occassional beer, cider and red wine. Used to be a G n T mhan!

    Talk to your doctor.

It’s not the end of the world!

  9. Starry Plough,

My wife and a couple of her friends went on the Slimming World diet.

All of them have lost significant amounts.

I can’t believe all the stuff she is allowed to eat on it and, especially, the size of portions allowed.

I’m normally not a great believer in diets but must say I’m impressed with this one.

    Good luck

The link istanbulcelt put up works, lost 2 kilos in 5 days on it, but it’s really hard work, it was for me anyways, didn’t have any energy, I have resorted to eating what I like, but restrict the intake.

The weight is dropping off slowly, and have much more energy.

Cutting out butter and sugar in my tea was a fairly painless way of losing weight gradually. A bit more exercise makes a difference.

  13. A lot of the eating stuff I have an idea about, I was a Chef for years, the main change I see is my total lack of fitness since wee Starry was born three years ago, I have to cook for her everyday and end up eating her dinner as well as my own most days, that’s got to stop for sure, thanks Bhoys for all the tips and support.

My Celtic life and my own wee Starry life have changed for the better since I wandered into CQN some years back..

I would advise not going on quick fix diets.Eat less exercise more, the weight will come off.Weight loss of 2 pounds per week is what you should aim for, this has proved to be the best rate to lose weight and more importantly keep weight off.

Agree with Auldheid, exercise is the best thing. Cutting down or out beer, ‘ginger’, fried meat and takeaways might help but for me getting aff my bum and out walking or swimming was the best thing.

Back home bhoys searching for a new holiday destination. Thinking Crete or some Greek island any you bhoys been been to Crete any advice welcome.

MT I’m currently sitting in a Creten sports bar watching the tennis.

The air temperature is about 28° the beer about 5°.

This is my first time in Crete and I’m impressed so far. I am staying in the village of Piskopiano which is in the hills overlooking the busy resort of Herronosos.

Its more expensive that the pre euro Greece but still pretty reasonable price wise, currently drinking a litre of the local beer at €2:50 and you can eat pretty cheaply if you want.

There is also lots for the kids to do when they have grown bored of parent baiting.

There is also the added attraction of seeing super sammi on TV every 20 minutes doing thechead and shoulders advert.

On the whole i would recommend to a fellow tim.

  20. Starry,

l lowered my cholesterol from 6.4 to 4.6 by eating porridge every morning, having half a grapefruit each day and exercising.

The exercise needs to make your heart beat faster though, a gentle walk doesn’t quite do it. Sometimes I run up and down the stairs for a few minutes to get it pumping. Check with your doc first though.

Unfortunately home grown footballers like there counterparts the world over will seek pastures new and will chase the bucks after some time. celtic need to ensure no first team player (either through the academy or bought) walks away for nothing. celtic need to ensure there is a talent flow coming through the academy and front door to take the place of those going in the opposite direction.

since lenny took over celtic cant be faulted, we have bought and brought through several younger players well. we have also sold well with mcgeady and ki for 15.5 million pounds and the likelihood of victor and hooper following suit for at least £16 million pounds exemplifying that point.

    for celtic its a no brainer;

we bleed and develop young players

we get good young players for a few years before they move for a big fee.

we reinvest most of the uplift on value from players sold on new young players.

I would hazard a guess that 5 years of successfully implementing such a strategy alongside C/L group stage participation would transform celtic into a desirable destination for the most talented kids in football.

with every successful European outing 70% of income goes towards developing celtic park improvements (as can be seen this year) and envois i.e. celtic triangle, bars, restaurants, shops, museum, hotel, small sided pitches, supporters barn etc… all geared towards making our club stronger, bigger and financially stable. develop lennoxtown training centre further to incorporate a country hotel etc…

celtic have so much potential and the capital from our current model of working could be just the thing. we might lose our best players but in the long terms we would be much stronger and more able to complete with mid range clubs in bigger countries.

    hail hail

  22. starry,

Try running 4 times a week well, walking to start with). Good easy-in program here

That sensible eating, drinking plenty o water and only having a bevvy once a week is how I lost a kilo a week (have done that a few times now – works everytime). Only thing is, if you do get into the running it takes up a lot of time in your week.

    Good luck !!

    More exercise
