Audit, administer, delegate

796

The comment in today’s Telegraph by Joe Ledley confirming that, in the event they win the league early, Celtic have considered giving players some extended rest period before the end of the season has a lot of focus about it.

We have Champions League qualifiers starting on 2 July and hopefully extending six games later in the last week in August, all plans must be made with the objective of being as strong as possible for these games.

Last season APOEL Nicosia got through the Champions League group stages, beat Lyon in the last 16, before being stopped in the quarters by Real Madrid, but their European adventure this season was ended in August by Neftchi Baku.  Rangers run to the Uefa Cup final in 2008 was quickly followed by an August elimination at the hands of the mighty Kaunas.  We don’t need reminded of what happened in 2005, when the club formerly known as Artmedia Bratislava, and no longer playing top flight football, caught Celtic cold.  Five times.

I’m keen to hear from Celtic on policing and stewarding at games. The club have to be attentive to all season ticket holders who feel they have been poorly treated, by police or stewards. Processes to deal with such matters must be open to supporter groups to audit, perhaps even to administer. Delegate thus, and you resolve many concerns.

The Lions Roar event at the Kerrydale Suite on 1 March, with a film of the 1967 European Cup final, will have commentary from Bertie Auld, Stevie Chalmers, Bobby Lennon, Jim Craig, John Fallon, Charlie Gallacher, Billy McNeill, John Clark and John Hughes.  Mike Jackson will also be there with Billy.  Tickets went on sale six days ago and there are only a few left…..

    ‘Well Ernie,

We all have our reasons for wanting or not wanting independence. For me the chance to ditch the Butchers Apron should be taken.’

You talk about independence but I assume you’d want to be a member of the EU, which would suggest that you’re not against political unions as such, just a political union with the English and Welsh.

As for the butchers apron, the saltire is an integral part of it, and for good reason. The Scots played a disproportionate part in forging and defending the British empire. I don’t see any difference between waving a saltire or a union jack.

I’d say the majority he just knew. He didn’t get a quite easy one of who was POTY in 2007. He said Larsson when answer was Naka, but I’d imagine that was one down to the pressure of the chair.

The ones I didn’t get were Willie Wallace and Napolean (have to say I never heard of that nickname before).

Indeed iki if no party exists there is always the anarchist route. There is however the chance to help mould party policy to one more in line with what you want. Not saying that would be easy , but it would be easier than it is right now.

There are many groups out there dealing with the yes vote and what this could mean to scotland. In the no campaign i dont know what you hear , but for my part ot just seems to keep repeating the mantra “better together” , which would be fine if they could prove that it was the case. They cannot just as the yes cannot say things would be better finacially. for me its about self respect as much as anything. I find it highly insulting to be told scotland cannot make policy , money or impact on the world stage unless it sides with england and specifically london. I would be more than happy to talk to you about this further off the blog if you want.

Hand wringing aside over the myriad of Green Brigade issues be they political, moral, or just downright Orwellian, are Mr. Bankier and Mr. Lawell not on the record as recently declaring they have not and would not share fan’s personal details with authorities? Please correct me if I’m wrong.

If indeed this is the case, the Green Brigade statement published yesterday would reveal that they are at direct loggerheads with the club over what is really going on beyond the public eye. So then, who to believe?

  13. Wee eck was asked by cardinal keef, in the aftermath of the shame game (the sleekit whisperer one), for a breakdown of the crime figures regarding sectarian offences, I think we were all sick of being tarred with their ignorant brush . Wee eck promised to publish the results of a report as soon as he had it, after many delays it was announced that the report had been lost, one wonders just how bad it showed up the klan

Since then we’ve had a sustained attack on the green brigade, there have been no convictions but plenty arrests, recently wee eck published stats on sectarian crime at football showing the numbers arrested at matches, IMO it’s part of the balancing act, as bad as each other crap we’ve had to put up with from the media for years. Politically motivated persecution of a group of Celtic fans is not on, I don’t think previous incumbents would have stood for this, lawell’s silence is deafening and very disappointing. I’ll not be renewing unless the club get their act together and start looking after our own.

He made no desire to sound interested. He didn’t even pad it out telling interesting stories about his own career. I would have not renewed his contract if I was his boss. Sky make even the most dull game exciting. Burley couldn’t wait to get away. A terrible man. Liked him when he played for celtic the first couple of seasons but went way down in my book when he lost interest. DSunno how he still has a job on TV. He is hopeless.

  16. I see a good few people saying shades of basically due to their antics the GB aren’t helping themselves.

Now there is some merit to that argument however does whatever they are doing justify treatment akin to what would be dished out to high level members of organised crime or drug dealers? Police coming to their work? Being arrested at an airport?

I think the Police should be sharing what they believe the GB are really up to, to warrant that level of scrutiny as something reeks about all of this.

Alternatively these guys who are being arrested at airports, who are having their lives wrecked by charges that are being thrown out almost immediately, should be lawyering up and getting to the crux of this matter.

  17. Re the Green Brigade

I believe that on any match at Celtic Park I now have a significantly increased chance of being banned or worse due to my support of the Green Brigade, the worst scenario would be having to travel to Scotland to attend court and possible loss of wages or worse.

I don’t think I’m doing anything worse than I have done in my younger days at live music gigs, the truth is the police are deliberately heavy handed and provocative, there is real threat to ordinary Celtic football fans being criminalised for no more than organised singing and visual displays.

As the song goes …… If you tolerate this then your children ( or you) will be next.

What’s needed is a civil rights lawyer involved and available at match days to record the police ……ahem at work.

    Good morning lhads

Sadly, the present situation with the GB is something that was all too easy to predict. It is due largely to factors: (i) the absence of an understanding of what Celtic is (even by Celtic), and (ii) the commodification of the world (including Celtic).

    What exactly does this mean?

To start, let me say that I believe Celtic to be both a catholic and a Catholic club’ that is, although it is open to all, it would be folly to ignore its history, and role as a touchstone for the Irish Catholic community (particularly in a country and organization which is so often anti-Catholic).

For that reason, I draw a comparison to the history of the Cathoic church in the 1960’s and Vatican II, and its discussion of ecclesiology; that is, what does it mean to be ‘the church’?.

The Church had always been largely thought as a the ‘church triumphant’ that is (i) an edifice, and (ii) a leader/dominator. However, the 60’s forced a new way of viewing the world, which, in turn, forced the church to look at how (i) it was seen (by its members and others), and (ii) how it viewed itself.

Avery Dulles S.J. wrote a book called ‘Models of the Church’ which argued that there is not one church, but really 5 main models of the church, which all must be recognized and integrated if the chruch is to move forward. These included:

    1. church as institution – which focuses on ‘visible structures … rights and powers of its officers’

    2. church as mystical communion – ‘ people of faith … united by a common participation’

    3. church as sacrament – ‘symboilic representation of god’s grace’

    4. church as ‘kerygmatic’ – ‘purpose is to spread God’s word’

    4. church as servant – chruch’s role is to serve humanity.

Dulles concluded that, while all 5 are real and important, the first church as institution was the only one that could NOT be paramount. But they are all important, and they have to be recognized, and work together.

There are important similarities – and important differences – to the situation in which Celtic currently finds itself.

Just like the church had to ask itself ‘what is it?’ in order to find out how to move forward, so too must Celtic ask itself, ‘What is Celtic?’ if it is to move forward.

Is it an instiution? Is it bricks and mortar? Is it Celtic Park? Without these, there is no club, but this is the least important aspect.

Is it a ‘mystical communion’? Possibly (without or without religion)… the shared bond that the supporters have transcends merely sports. Whether it is the irish connection, catholic connection (not Catholic… see our shared spirit with Barca… mas que un club)

Is it a servant … this was the original purpose of the club… and as recent developments (the Thai tims, Celtic Charities, even CQN’s fundraining for our friend Martin) show, this is still a large part of who and what Celtic is.

But the Club needs more than a mission statement… someone (who knows the club much better than i) needs to do what Fr. Dulles did 40 years ago for the Church… sit down and think about what the Club is, and equally importantly, how to integrate the disparate parts.

Celtic isn’t just an instituation… and isn’t just PL… but they ARE part of it.

Celtic isn’t just NFL… but he is part of it.

Celtic isn’t just the players… but they are part of it.

Celtic isn’t just the fans… but they are part of it.

Celtic isn’t just the GB.. but they are part of it.

Someone (and the onus is on the club to sort this out) … needs to recognize and figure out how to integrate the various aspects of Celtic. There will never be a perfect answer… (for example, what started out as a charitiable endeavour is now a PLC, which, by law, must be about profit) but the questions need to be asked, and the discussion (in the short term, with the GB, but in the long term, with all members of the Celtic family) needs to be had.

As I have asked before, what is Celtic in the 21sth century? Until someone at the club starts asking that question, and there is a discussion on the celtic identity, the recent problems will continue.

I am not saying that this discussion will solve all of the problems… but, what I am saying is that there cant be a lasting solution, until the club starts asking these questions.
