Auston ‘n’ Arne

417

On loan at Birmingham City during season 2022-23 transformed Auston Trusty (26) from an Arsenal project into a respected defender in the English Championship.  Just two years earlier, Cameron Carter-Vickers earned the same reputation in that division with Bournemouth as a loanee from Tottenham.

Auston spent last season with one of the busiest jobs in football, central defender at Sheffield United, who lost 28 of their 38 Premier League games, a campaign which saw them finish bottom after only three wins.  The central defender role at Celtic could hardly be more different.

Celtic have broken their transfer record only once since Chris Sutton arrived in the summer of 2000 – with then-20-year-old Odsonne Edouard’s £9m signing in 2018.  We are back paying big bucks for another 20-year-old today, with the anticipated arrival of Arne Engels (the Belgian turns 21 next weekend).

At this age, central midfielders can be adapted to fit whatever role their manager thinks best.  Consider Callum McGregor’s migration from a No. 7, to an 8, to a 6.  We are going to need plenty of energy in the middle of the park this season, one of the characteristics I expect we’ll see in Arne.

  1. if (IF) we pay the reported fees for Arne and Auston we will have broken our transfer record three times with Brendan in charge

He will also have signed 4 of the 7 most expensive players we’ve signed in the last twenty years. Not bad for someone who has been in charge for 3 1/2 years in total

Can we stop talking about him not being backed now?

Auston – Austin, Austen – or even Austyn?

Those yanks do like to screw around with the ole name spelling.

  3. Go get Lennon Miller as well and loan him back with Holm. They were going to spend 6.5m on Bogusz.

Miller will be another to go for daft money next year. Hits the home grown as well.

I hope we sign young McCowan from Dundee. From what I have seen of him he is a very good passer of the ball and has an eye for goal. I think we are going to need a lot of rotation atr times in our midfield, and with Tomoki seemingly on the way out, then it makes sense. It is refreshing to see us spend money, but money on quality by the looks and feel of it. Feels like its turning into an exciting McBriday, I mean Friday. That is what I call Fridays in my classroom. I never look forward to games against thems. I only like them when they are finished and we have won, as when I am watching it on my own, I feel like I am possessed by a maddie fae Tintae Crescent for the duration of the whole game, shouting stuff that doesn’t make sense, and cursing so loud, my neighbors can hear.

Anyhoo, refresh button will be getting hit a lot today.

    Hail Hail my fellow tims.

Cheers – was worried, of course, that he’d picked up a knock.

Just think – if that guy hadn’t told Peter Lawwell he was an @rsehole and to get the money spent, none of this would be happening…

  8. Sack the board.

Transfer policy is a shambles, leaving it late has cost us money on Engles and other teams will run us up.

Whilst it’s great we are trying to back the manager it could be done a lot earlier and more cost effective.

Just watch the volume of business that is done across Europe today – there are reasons for that. Celtic are not alone and are not calling the shots in every situation.

Being on the train to Lausanne is like making love to a beautiful woman.

    Actually.

  14. If McCowan comes in at Tomoki leaves then I guess it would need Holm to make up the 3 cover players in midfield.

Personally I would be happier if we got another in. If there is any quality out there. Or if not hold onto Tomoki. He knows the score here.

  17. From BRs comments it seems there could be more comings and goings. West Ham midfielder Andy Irvine on loan according to Sly.

Just hope there’s no late minute Kyogo smash n grab.
