On loan at Birmingham City during season 2022-23 transformed Auston Trusty (26) from an Arsenal project into a respected defender in the English Championship. Just two years earlier, Cameron Carter-Vickers earned the same reputation in that division with Bournemouth as a loanee from Tottenham.
Auston spent last season with one of the busiest jobs in football, central defender at Sheffield United, who lost 28 of their 38 Premier League games, a campaign which saw them finish bottom after only three wins. The central defender role at Celtic could hardly be more different.
Celtic have broken their transfer record only once since Chris Sutton arrived in the summer of 2000 – with then-20-year-old Odsonne Edouard’s £9m signing in 2018. We are back paying big bucks for another 20-year-old today, with the anticipated arrival of Arne Engels (the Belgian turns 21 next weekend).
At this age, central midfielders can be adapted to fit whatever role their manager thinks best. Consider Callum McGregor’s migration from a No. 7, to an 8, to a 6. We are going to need plenty of energy in the middle of the park this season, one of the characteristics I expect we’ll see in Arne.

Brendan presser
I’m intrigued by Valle , Engels and Trusty but trying not to get carried away with the money we spent on them. Can they make us better in Europe? Unknown.
At this late stage , I think we need another 2-3 in the door. Need depth due to large number of games (defence and midfield). Hopefully a surprise loan deal for player who’s played at top level.
Can’t focus on my work:)

I see Toney going to Saudi Arabia – it’s the betting on the camel racing that swung it.

Just think – if that guy hadn’t told Peter Lawwell he was an @rsehole and to get the money spent, none of this would be happening…
That made me laugh….
Mikey leaving is absolutely the right call ..
… but, for me, it IS tinged with a little bit of regret.
Someone I know well knows him well … and says he is really great bloke.
Good luck Mikey.
Hope you tear it up down there.
👏👏👏👏👏
Souness is a thug.
Wish Mikey Johnstone all the very best. Sometimes it just doesn’t work out, even for good players. I think he will do well down in engerland. Sometimes his decision making was not the best but we can say that about all wingers. I don’t think many appreciated Aidan McGeady until after he left. I don’t think Neil Lennon did Mikey any favors that time with his reaction at Ayewearebrokes, unfortunately. This is shaping into a pretty good window. I don’t think thems are as bad as many people make out as when it comes to this unique game, anything can happen and form can go out the window. We dominated them for the most part in games last year but they were still close results.
Anyone seen a sighting of Riquelme yet or Robbie Keane yet?
Surprised we’ve loaned out Iwata – Holm seemed the obvious midfielder to move out this season & Iwata is natural cover for CalMac whom we seem determined to play every minute of every game.
If BR can do for Engels what he did with Dembele, KT & MoR – we’ll be breaking new transfer ground again when he moves on.
Did we get a fee for Micky?

No Celtic squad is complete without a player with a frequently misspelled name.
You mean Austun?

BigJimmy Wee Bobby is a really terrific guy. A great people person and fabulous ambassador. He has so many stories to tell. Not a bad footballer in his time either.
*had the pleasure of his company when one of the crowd asked about the time he allegedly punched the ball out of booby clarke’s hands, I was behind the goal that afternoon and it looked as if he drapped it, his response was naw he knocked it as he had been at a scotland/Ireland junior match earlier that week and saw it happen there and the goal stood so he tried it with the same success.
That was the game where clarke threw his boot threw the dressing room windae, on the following Monday at a Scotland national team get the gether he was still greetin until Bobby told him who cares we won and as long as we’re champions at the end of the season that’s all that matters

Celtic have made a bid for Dundee midfielder Luke McCowan and are poised to complete deals for Sheffield United centre-back Auston Trusty and midfielder Arne Engels from Augsburg.
No agreement has yet been reached for 26-year-old McCowan, but Celtic are hopeful of securing his signing before the 23:00 BST deadline.
McCowan joined Dundee from Ayr United in June 2021 and has scored 28 times in 123 appearances, including three in eight this term.
Trusty’s manager Chris Wilder said on Friday that he “believes” the 26-year-old was having a medical with Celtic after a deal was agreed on Thursday.
Twice-capped United States international Trusty made 34 appearances last season for a side relegated from the Premier League after joining from Arsenal and started two of their three English Championship games this term.
He joined Arsenal from Colorado Rapids in 2022 but failed to break into the first team, spending time on loan back at the Major League Soccer (MLS) club and then Birmingham City.

Celtic have also agreed a deal to sign 20-year-old Belgian midfielder Engels from Bundesliga club Augsburg.
Reports suggest that could break the club record fee Celtic paid Paris St-Germain for striker Odsonne Edouard in 2018.
Engels has made 53 appearances for the Bundesliga club, having started his career with Club Bruges.
Barcelona left-back Alex Valle also joined the Scottish champions on loan this week.
Manager Brendan Rodgers has been clear signings would arrive after the sale of Matt O’Riley to Brighton & Hove Albion.
The Celtic boss has previously stated he wanted two midfielders to replace the Denmark international.
Meanwhile, Republic of Ireland winger Mikey Johnston has been sold to West Bromwich Albion, having spent time on loan to the Championship club last season.

Souness said on Talksport the other day that he was victimised in Scotland on the pitch and should not have been sent off for the challenge on Billy Stark – complete thug as you say.

+++++++++++++++++++++
The list of outs here is massive
A good chunk of wages saved.
Looking forward to 11pm till the madness stops and we can concentrate on pumping the huns
Hope to see McCowan’s name added to the ins…..
Scottish window is 11:30 no idea why 🙄
Souness was a thug, but also a strong player who would get into most sides. MON called him a “dirty bastard” which summed him up very well.
Prestonpans
We always 30 minutes later than England and Europe
Must be the only was the FTSFA try to give us a competitive advantage
Also interesting to hear mcinnes call for a free weekend before his qualifier
Wonder if he will think the same if we get them after a champions league game
Brendan doing a little backtracking in the press conference mentioning that he is surrounded by a great team
Glad to see it
Also happy that he is getting backed, can’t wait for the season ahead
The Belgium squad in full:
Goalkeepers – Koen Casteels (Al Qadsiah), Thomas Kaminski (Luton Town), Matz Sels (Nottingham Forest).
Defenders – Zeno Debast (Sporting CP), Arthur Theate (Eintracht Frankfurt), Wout Faes (Leicester City), Thomas Meunier (Lille), Timothy Castagne (Fulham), Maxim De Cuyper (Club Brugge), Koni De Winter (Genoa).
Midfielders – Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City), Youri Tielemans (Aston Villa), Charles De Ketelaere (Atalanta) Orel Mangala (Lyon), Arthur Vermeeren (RB Leipzig), Amadou Onana (Aston Villa).
Forwards – Alexis Saelemaekers (Milan), Arne Engels (Augsburg), Dodi Lukebakio (Sevilla), Johan Bakayoko (PSV), Lois Openda (RB Leipzig), Jeremy Doku (Manchester City), Julien Duranville (Borussia Dortmund).
As well as Arne getting selected, I see Maxim De Cuyper in the squad. Is that not one of the Latin responses at Mass?
Dodi Lukebakoio might get transferred to Angers and become an Oasis tribute act
Charles de Ketelaere is joining Strathclyde Police to tackle the Green Brigade.
A tad controversial. Where have we improved in terms of European competition??
For me , it’s only in the left defensive area with the addition of Trusty (possibly Valle).
No where else!
Engels replaces MOR – like for like ( could argue weaker since Engels doesn’t have experience of MOR)
Yes we’ve spent a lot of money – but still nowhere near what we have brought in this window.
Hoping for a big name loan deal – matching Rodgers ask to improve the team.
Odd saying this since we have broken transfer records – reality is our midfield and forward areas are not stronger than last season. Yet!
Maybe I’m missing something
‘Gers braced for late Butland bid’
Steboy
Much needed competition in centre half and left back
Midfield and forward line was always strong
Glad we have replaced M’OR with someone who Brendan wanted and we have Bernardo with a year under his belt who I suspect will get the majority of starts for the next 6 weeks or so
It’s a good window for me due to the above and moving on a lot of the squad
A major plus point is the lack of “projects” we have bought on this year
We have enough of that in our squad
The fact we have bought quality that will improve the team is massive
And don’t forget we had to go out and buy Bernardo and Idah
15 Million or so in that pair
Or 10 cantwells….
