Auston ‘n’ Arne

417

On loan at Birmingham City during season 2022-23 transformed Auston Trusty (26) from an Arsenal project into a respected defender in the English Championship.  Just two years earlier, Cameron Carter-Vickers earned the same reputation in that division with Bournemouth as a loanee from Tottenham.

Auston spent last season with one of the busiest jobs in football, central defender at Sheffield United, who lost 28 of their 38 Premier League games, a campaign which saw them finish bottom after only three wins.  The central defender role at Celtic could hardly be more different.

Celtic have broken their transfer record only once since Chris Sutton arrived in the summer of 2000 – with then-20-year-old Odsonne Edouard’s £9m signing in 2018.  We are back paying big bucks for another 20-year-old today, with the anticipated arrival of Arne Engels (the Belgian turns 21 next weekend).

At this age, central midfielders can be adapted to fit whatever role their manager thinks best.  Consider Callum McGregor’s migration from a No. 7, to an 8, to a 6.  We are going to need plenty of energy in the middle of the park this season, one of the characteristics I expect we’ll see in Arne.

    Steb – you’re either a hun or a moron.

    Take your pick 👍

  2. Loans or acquisitions = irrelevant. Idah won us the league as a loanee. Take any player to make team better.

Saying that as a moronic hun ;)

Souness was a thug, but also a strong player who would get into most sides. MON called him a “dirty bastard” which summed him up very well.

*I’ve mentioned this before, but many years ago I read an article on the Shoot or Goal and it was about the best players, cannae remember how many, that played in various regions of the UK, the Scottish one was selected by their greatest living thug while the Mersey one was by that other king Denis Law, the only one to make more than one list was our king Kenny.

Now Denis actually qualified his list by saying that one of the best in that area was the beast but he never chose him as he couldnae select a player who deliberately went out to injure a fellow professional, he also mentioned a game where he literally just kicked the manure players off the park, in the return game, at annfield tae, as the match kicked off, big Joe Jordan, who hudnae started in the first game, just ran across to his left side of the park and humphed sourpuss who then disappeared for the rest of the game, not only was he a thug but a bully tae.

  11. My firstgame was at Parkhead vs St Johnstone. It was so packed that I had to sit on top of the wall that ran along behind the old Rangers end (my Da thought the Celtic end would be too busy). I could only see through the gap between the top of the crowds heads and the entryway into the ground. Maybe 25 % of the pitch. I got lifted over. That’s about as much as I remember. I think it was 2-2 and it must have been around 1970.

My first game was Celtic V Man Utd pre-season 1966/67.
