Auston ‘n’ Arne

417

On loan at Birmingham City during season 2022-23 transformed Auston Trusty (26) from an Arsenal project into a respected defender in the English Championship.  Just two years earlier, Cameron Carter-Vickers earned the same reputation in that division with Bournemouth as a loanee from Tottenham.

Auston spent last season with one of the busiest jobs in football, central defender at Sheffield United, who lost 28 of their 38 Premier League games, a campaign which saw them finish bottom after only three wins.  The central defender role at Celtic could hardly be more different.

Celtic have broken their transfer record only once since Chris Sutton arrived in the summer of 2000 – with then-20-year-old Odsonne Edouard’s £9m signing in 2018.  We are back paying big bucks for another 20-year-old today, with the anticipated arrival of Arne Engels (the Belgian turns 21 next weekend).

At this age, central midfielders can be adapted to fit whatever role their manager thinks best.  Consider Callum McGregor’s migration from a No. 7, to an 8, to a 6.  We are going to need plenty of energy in the middle of the park this season, one of the characteristics I expect we’ll see in Arne.

  7. My first game actually cannae remember which is unusual for me but I was sittin on that wee wall at the running track in the Jungle and all I remember is the wee barra, the juggler, big hooky and charles patrick playing, btw these were the names my da called them, we were up in the old Vale of Leven CSC bus and they wee singing “how much is that doggy in the window, the one that looks like big John McPhail” as well as “oh Patsy Gallacher, Patsy Patsy Gallacher, oh Patsy Gallacher and Andy McAtee, my da never saw any of the latter two as he was a wee bhoy himself when they played, the reason I recall the second song was we were travelling on McAteer Coaches fae Helensburgh and I thought that’s who they were singing about.

That game is my first memory of Celtic although my dad said I watched the 1967 final. Have no recollection of it however when watching some b&w coverage bits ring a bell ,must be some unconscious memory in there.

Can remember the one in 1970 though 🫣

Don’t think there’s any need for that or others calling people Huns and morons.

Just because someone’s glass isn’t half full, doesn’t warrant those types of insults.

We all see things how we see them and should be able to express that without worrying about personalised attacks.

  11. My first game was about 53 or 54. Bobby Collins was playing. Everybody was calling for the wee barra and I couldn’t see any wheel barrow anywhere. Can’t remember who we were playing. I was passed from arm to arm of my Dad and Uncles in what my Dad always called the Hayshed.

  14. Put this up before. My 1st game was the 7-1 game,up on my Das shoulders.Only remember the party in Gov an after it.Fathers two sisters and husbands there, and a couple of older cousins.Family day out.

  15. My first game was against the old Rangers. August 1955. We won 4-1 at Ibrox on the Saturday and myself and two mates went to the Wednesday game. The first for all three of us. We thought the League section was in the bag. Lo and behold, they beat us 0-4 at Celtic Park. We drew the last game and as was usual in those days the League Cup was out of our grasp! Bugger.

  16. First game – March 24th 1962 – beat Aberdeen 2-0 – remember more about the journey on the Supporters bus than the game!

  21. Celt55,

I remember so many like that.Always started the group well, then fell away.Dreadful times.

  22. Cant remember my first celtic game. Probably be 1969 I would have been 6. My dad took me for about 4 seasons then he stopped going altogether. Possible financial reasons. Never thought to ask him if he remembered my first game, too late now, but at least he gave me the lifelong love of Celtic

  23. My first game was Partisan Belgrade. In the Jungle, the drinks I’d queued for flung all over me just after the second half started and somebody scored, to this day don’t who but must’ve been Jackie.

Anyway, anyone else questioning the signing of a serial loser?
