Auston ‘n’ Arne

417

On loan at Birmingham City during season 2022-23 transformed Auston Trusty (26) from an Arsenal project into a respected defender in the English Championship.  Just two years earlier, Cameron Carter-Vickers earned the same reputation in that division with Bournemouth as a loanee from Tottenham.

Auston spent last season with one of the busiest jobs in football, central defender at Sheffield United, who lost 28 of their 38 Premier League games, a campaign which saw them finish bottom after only three wins.  The central defender role at Celtic could hardly be more different.

Celtic have broken their transfer record only once since Chris Sutton arrived in the summer of 2000 – with then-20-year-old Odsonne Edouard’s £9m signing in 2018.  We are back paying big bucks for another 20-year-old today, with the anticipated arrival of Arne Engels (the Belgian turns 21 next weekend).

At this age, central midfielders can be adapted to fit whatever role their manager thinks best.  Consider Callum McGregor’s migration from a No. 7, to an 8, to a 6.  We are going to need plenty of energy in the middle of the park this season, one of the characteristics I expect we’ll see in Arne.

So the next episode of Coronation street 7.30 pm

    Sad T.V

  2. Left back area strengthened while adding 6”3 of height and pace of trusty. Engels to replace MOR position has a lot of promise and has impressed against German teams. Bernardo and McCowan will add cover through the many competitions. Big idah adds a new dimension to forward line. Good football team with physicality , finally!

I think we spent less than we made (although salaries will be higher no doubts).

Money available if needed in Jan!

Glad it’s over – now to the match. (Other than free transfers;)

Cruyff was rising to become a star,I remember his 1st half shot from bout 40 yards scudding the post and rebounding nearly as far. They were a majestic team with a rich culture of football under Rinus Michels.

*and yet the Big Mhan reckoned that Johan Neeskins was the real star of taht side

I remember Cruyff hitting the post that night at Hampden. It was from our corner, too. Wee Jinkey scored that night. We beat them 1-0, but they were a better team than us and it was a great time for Dutch football.

  8. When Ange left I wondered how long it would take before our Oriental players would go tae, well it looks as if its only Kyogo and Daisy left

Ajax beat Panathanaikos at Wembley that year for their 1st luggy.

I recall Cruyff being asked how does this Total football work,as all the team stepped in as tho they knew what teammates were thinking?

Cruyff went thro the team and how they all played different positions coming thro youth set up,neeskens at one time a full back the forward,Suurbier was winger then stepped back to be a full back, all got knowledge of what the position was like to play then moved up to 1st team, found it fascinating and I loved that Ajax side, pity Dixie skying a pen versus inter in 72 deprived us of revenge :-)

    Drambowie Celt,

Whit a great windae. Almost as strong as my windows in Tintae when Thems used to try and pan them in. Off to watch my wee bhoy, 5ft 11 15 yr auld play American fitba for his school. Chuffed as feck with our transfer business.

Hail Hail, canny remember my first game but know that I was standing in Aisle 14 in the auld Rangers end as my wee da and his mates pulled out the quarter bottles of white and mackay, with the shot glass lid on them. Pished as farts they’d get but always gave me money fur a macaroon and chewing gum😂😂. So I wouldn’t grass them in to their wives. Would’ve been around 1977 when I was 6.

Decent window … yet the instinctive response of a tiny minority is the reaffirmation that they are feart of R2ngers.

  17. When I was a wee loddie my da came home with a pup, it was a collie possibly my granny sneaked it over fae Connemara as he had an older one in the house which was brought over in the folds of her coat, anyway one day it was gone as I found out later it soiled the floor and my mother wisnae pleased.

So I often wondered why my da always had tae go intae a pub tae see a man about a dug enroute tae Parkheid, never thought tae ask him whit happened tae the dug when he came oot.

Out all night so coming home to all the threads of transfer business.

    Good window.

    Our best? I don’t know …

… but it’s certainly the most transformative window I can ever remember.

Fewer players but better players is the mantra.

For any lingerers still trotting out the civil war analogies? – Brendan clearly got his way. “Calm down” as someone once said.

Last few days of a transfer window is a pressure situation. Lots of details to sort out, lots of mental and intellectual energy spent.

Well done to everyone at Celtic who was involved.

I waited 13 yrs to find oot that going to see a man aboot a dug was code for going to the cross keys tae get pished. Auld fecker always came back with plenty of fish and chips though😂😂👍

  20. @Big j in the Morn ..From my mate..

Wee Freddie riding for P.F Nicholls Sat….Possible treble…

To others ..this is not a tip….Bet carefully….

  21. Great having fresh faces into the squad, still think every single player will find it difficult to remove the bhoys already in charge of the jersey …

Delighted Brendan has got the players he wanted, would love McCowan to do a Hartley and get in the team and not be moved :-)

    Delighted …

    Holy trinity … stronger United

Leave the in-fighting to others 🍀🍀🍀

  22. P.S….He took 7/2 on Nicholls only runner the other day

It returned odds on….He picked up 1200 plus…

Love your research into your horses ..

P.S. i took a foto of my bet on Forest .for you know who…

Sorry to see Tomoki leave but it was inevitable and it is Brendan sending a clear message.

“Quite good won’t cut it at Celtic”

Great athlete and physically fast. The season he signed for us he had the fastest sprint in the J-League … just ½ km/h slower than the fastest sprint at the Euros the previous year (by Kylian Mbappe no less).

But he was slower mentally and that, allied to his muscular posture, made him look a bit clunky on the ball, often falling to see a lane for a forward pass before the opposition closed it down.

    And he needed games.

At 27 years old, I assume Brendan didn’t see him improving sufficiently.

The recruitment team (clearly influenced by Ange) brought in six Japanese players.

Kyogo, Daizen and Reo were brilliant successes and remain with us on long contracts.

Yuki and Yosuke didn’t work out at all.

Tomoki was kinda in-between. A shame but this is a tough gig.

Good luck Tomoki Iwata. You go with my best wishes. I hope you have a good career.
