On loan at Birmingham City during season 2022-23 transformed Auston Trusty (26) from an Arsenal project into a respected defender in the English Championship.  Just two years earlier, Cameron Carter-Vickers earned the same reputation in that division with Bournemouth as a loanee from Tottenham.

Auston spent last season with one of the busiest jobs in football, central defender at Sheffield United, who lost 28 of their 38 Premier League games, a campaign which saw them finish bottom after only three wins.  The central defender role at Celtic could hardly be more different.

Celtic have broken their transfer record only once since Chris Sutton arrived in the summer of 2000 – with then-20-year-old Odsonne Edouard’s £9m signing in 2018.  We are back paying big bucks for another 20-year-old today, with the anticipated arrival of Arne Engels (the Belgian turns 21 next weekend).

At this age, central midfielders can be adapted to fit whatever role their manager thinks best.  Consider Callum McGregor’s migration from a No. 7, to an 8, to a 6.  We are going to need plenty of energy in the middle of the park this season, one of the characteristics I expect we’ll see in Arne.

    McCowan is a player who seems to me hasn’t fulfilled his considerable potential yet. I think Brendan will get the best out of him and we may end up with someone who cannot be left out of the team.

     

     

    He is the best young (ish) Scottish player outside of us that I have seen for some time and not just in terms of his playing ability.

     

     

    In terms of character and attitude he presents as a natural winner and leader.

     

     

    I am really excited about this signing.

    I suspect a significant takeaway from this transfer window in the longer term will be the fact it must be close to cost neutral.

     

     

    Details of total cost will eventually come out in the wash.

    Bosun, Mikey, Rocco, Daniel, Tomoki probably got us the guts of £7m.

    … but, clearly, the impact of Brendan Rodgers (training standards, player improvement, coaching pedigree, gravitas) also contributed significantly to the value perception.

    Took her to Jamesy Fs testimonial … we were in the Kerrydale for 4pm opening, she was on the Fanta .. she even met BRRB & St Tams … she said to me last night “since we don’t have season tickets why don’t you take me to the Dortmund game, you’ve always said that’s a stadium you want to go too” no concept of money .. just back fae Tenerife that probably isn’t paid offf yet :-)

     

     

    She has been going to the Celtic girls games, because I don’t take her to the men’s games :-)

     

     

    Best night of my Celtic life was she got me and her tickets for the Hydro player of the year doo .. dad & daughter night … was amazing 🍀🍀🍀

    On holiday there with wife, daughter, 2 stepdaughters & wee granddaughter … was brilliant 4 x Sevs and me & MissGFTB … flag day, just me & MissGFTB in the Gaelic Corner in Tenerife … brilliant few hours, first day in a boozer with me & ma ghirl … even better her mum & Co were out the day before for a 0-0 draw at tynecastle :-)

    picking. Then red ones inked up and that hunger

     

    sent us out with milk cans, pea tins, jam-pots

     

    where briars scratched and wet grass bleached our boots.

     

    Round hayfields, cornfields and potato-drills

     

    we trekked and picked until the cans were full

     

    until the tinkling bottom had been covered

     

    with green ones, and on top big dark blobs burned

     

    like a plate of eyes. Our hands were peppered

     

    with thorn pricks, our palms sticky as Bluebeard’s.

     

    We hoarded the fresh berries in the byre.

     

    But when the bath was filled we found a fur,

     

    a rat-grey fungus, glutting on our cache.

     

    The juice was stinking too. Once off the bush

     

    the fruit fermented, the sweet flesh would turn sour.

     

    I always felt like crying. It wasn’t fair

     

    that all the lovely canfuls smelt of rot.

     

    Each year I hoped they’d keep, knew they would not.

    I realise there are very decent Celtic fans that do worry about things … but for the last whatever many days or weeks there are many who would love Celtic to fail ..

    Welcome to Celtic all the new signings, hefty amounts of fees paid out and to those who have left good luck in your careers, lots of fringe players are gone and a trimmed down squad will hopefully benefit from the Manager’s coaching methods.
