Auston ‘n’ Arne

417

On loan at Birmingham City during season 2022-23 transformed Auston Trusty (26) from an Arsenal project into a respected defender in the English Championship.  Just two years earlier, Cameron Carter-Vickers earned the same reputation in that division with Bournemouth as a loanee from Tottenham.

Auston spent last season with one of the busiest jobs in football, central defender at Sheffield United, who lost 28 of their 38 Premier League games, a campaign which saw them finish bottom after only three wins.  The central defender role at Celtic could hardly be more different.

Celtic have broken their transfer record only once since Chris Sutton arrived in the summer of 2000 – with then-20-year-old Odsonne Edouard’s £9m signing in 2018.  We are back paying big bucks for another 20-year-old today, with the anticipated arrival of Arne Engels (the Belgian turns 21 next weekend).

At this age, central midfielders can be adapted to fit whatever role their manager thinks best.  Consider Callum McGregor’s migration from a No. 7, to an 8, to a 6.  We are going to need plenty of energy in the middle of the park this season, one of the characteristics I expect we’ll see in Arne.

  1. McCowan is a player who seems to me hasn’t fulfilled his considerable potential yet. I think Brendan will get the best out of him and we may end up with someone who cannot be left out of the team.

He is the best young (ish) Scottish player outside of us that I have seen for some time and not just in terms of his playing ability.

In terms of character and attitude he presents as a natural winner and leader.

I am really excited about this signing.

Connaire your first game ? Davy if your health is good.Old Tim…

    ********

Pretty sure Davy’s first game was vs Falkirk ……the day Charles Patrick scored twice direct from a twice-taken corner.

I suspect a significant takeaway from this transfer window in the longer term will be the fact it must be close to cost neutral.

Details of total cost will eventually come out in the wash.

Yes – we sold one of our jewels. But only one.

And we’ve done something I can’t recall us ever doing.

Bringing in money for a clutch of fringe players.

Bosun, Mikey, Rocco, Daniel, Tomoki probably got us the guts of £7m.

So the “model” worked to a degree …

… but, clearly, the impact of Brendan Rodgers (training standards, player improvement, coaching pedigree, gravitas) also contributed significantly to the value perception.

    Blackberry Picking; by Seamus Heaney

Late August, given heavy rain and sun

for a full week, the blackberries would ripen.

At first, just one, a glossy purple clot

among others, red, green, hard as a knot.

You ate that first one and its flesh was sweet

like thickened wine: summer’s blood was in it

leaving stains upon the tongue and lust for

picking. Then red ones inked up and that hunger

sent us out with milk cans, pea tins, jam-pots

where briars scratched and wet grass bleached our boots.

    Round hayfields, cornfields and potato-drills

we trekked and picked until the cans were full

until the tinkling bottom had been covered

with green ones, and on top big dark blobs burned

like a plate of eyes. Our hands were peppered

with thorn pricks, our palms sticky as Bluebeard’s.

We hoarded the fresh berries in the byre.

But when the bath was filled we found a fur,

a rat-grey fungus, glutting on our cache.

The juice was stinking too. Once off the bush

the fruit fermented, the sweet flesh would turn sour.

I always felt like crying. It wasn’t fair

that all the lovely canfuls smelt of rot.

Each year I hoped they’d keep, knew they would not.

    No bother mate …

Pretty sure the usual suspects will have ma details from BMCUWP to that south side vagabond BRRB with probably a few acronyms in the middle :-)

Buzzing for Sunday … delighted wee Kyogo will still be wearing the hoops … that’s my main take fae the windae 🍀🍀🍀

  16. On this moment….Of theTics ..in and outs….

    I would say..WoW…..Thank you Celtic…..For giving me a reason……..

  17. I realise there are very decent Celtic fans that do worry about things … but for the last whatever many days or weeks there are many who would love Celtic to fail ..

    Division is their only tool

Enjoy Celtic … it is that easy 🍀🍀🍀🍀

  18. AuroraBorealis79 on

Anyone concerned about cover in the holding mid role after the sale of iwata will be relieved to learn that engels began his career in that position before becoming a more advanced midfielder

  19. Weaker or Stronger

Not ever interested in any board of Celtic ..

    I think it’s an internet thing ..

Delighted with any signing for Celtic, good or bad, obviously hopefully ever one is good .. I thought Martyn Hayes was going to be great, Stuart Slater nearly scored 4 in his first game against the Huns, including an overhead kick goal of the season ..

Players sign players don’t … hopefully we just support who we have

They can’t even bring themselves to have an undisclosed for O’Riley

  22. Welcome to Celtic all the new signings, hefty amounts of fees paid out and to those who have left good luck in your careers, lots of fringe players are gone and a trimmed down squad will hopefully benefit from the Manager’s coaching methods. Well done to all concerned in the recruitment process we will hopefully be stronger for the challenges that lie ahead in all competitions.
