Automatic CL qualification a year’s extrapolation away

248

Buoyed by two seasons with two clubs competing in the Europa League group stage, Scotland have reached 15th in the Uefa coefficient table.  If they hold off close challenges from Cyprus, Greece, Serbia, Croatia and Switzerland, this will be enough to deliver two Champions League qualification spots for season 2021-22.

This is of no more than passing interest to perennial champions, the 10th and 11th spots are where it gets really interesting.  Champions of the 10th and above place country get automatic entry into the Champions League group stage.  If the previous season’s CL winners have already qualified from their domestic league, as is usually the case, the 11th place country’s champions get direct entry into the group stage.

Ukraine and Turkey currently occupy 10th and 11th spots, with Austria, Denmark and Czech Repulic also ahead of Scotland, but for the next three seasons, Scotland will lose fewer points than each of those countries.  By contrast, we are ahead of all five countries last season and this.

Extrapolation is the scourge of the hopeful and we should not necessarily assume Celtic and Newco will continue to gather coefficient points at the same steady pace.  But, if we were to extrapolate, this season’s performances for Scotland and the five countries immediately above us, we would overtake Ukraine, Turkey, Denmark and Czech Republic by this time next year, leaving Salzburg-inspired Austria in 10th and Scotland 11th.

The Champions League qualification competition is difficult but it is doubly difficult through the non-champions route (only two places are available this way), so I’m not too worried about splitting the Scottish TV pot with another club.  The importance of nine and ten-in-a-row does not need to be stated, but a £40m bonus could sweeten the 11th successive title, should we get there.

Coming our way soon will be a fifth European spot, so points currently divided by four will likely be divided by five in season 2021-22.  Let’s hope the American money arriving in Aberdeen shortly can up their game in Europe.

  1. Looks like Brendan Fraudgers is at it again.

    “Arsenal are a great club”

Not ruling himself out. Leaving his hat in the ring. But aye… he left Celtic cause the board wouldn’t back him eh?

  2. So something for Celtic and Aberdeen to look forward to then

    meanwhile, shameless repost…

Good evening, friends. Now that the dust has settled on last night’s performance it’s time for you to finally decide your 3 best performers. Have your say and join the 40-odd folk that have voted by sending a short email to cqnpoty@gmail.com before 10pm tonight please. And as this was the last game in the month of November your votes will also count towards the Player of the Month. Who will follow on from James Forrest and Scott Brown. Hmmmmmmm…..

If Rodgers was offered that job he would be off in a second, no doubt about it.

  4. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

So the corruption of the Scottish game as all worthwhile, ignoring the licensing rules is ok for Scotland but all other countries must abide, exceptionalist Scotland should be defended.

  5. Great result last night.

More game time for Rogic , Johnston and the Griff before the Final would be most welcome .

i would like to see Kouassi go out on loan to Aberdeen or hibs for a season before we give up on him .

I love big Bitton , if Kouassi is not to be Broony’s replacement why not Bitton ?

  6. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

    Marspapa,

I think Bitton has improved big time, before I seen a player no trying, now I see a trier and if he can keep that up he can stay

  7. Cheers CANAMALAR.

The big man can play a bit , his ease of and eye for a pass is a teammates dream.

Most of our regulars are competent and confident in their passing , once our new recruits find their confidence we’ll be silky throughout the team.

    we can only get better.

It is strange that this is worth a new article at 5pm but the stand off between the Res 12 Team and the Board doesn’t get a mention. No mention either of the board view thats its all about oldco / newco when in fact its all about the shambolic institution thats runs our game and is apparently, accountable to no one. It’s almost as if our board are part of said shambolic organisation.

I’ve no doubt they (the Board) are fortified by sold out season tickets and a waiting list for new applicants.

  9. RTB

It’s all about the money – no commercial pressure on the PLC to push Res 12.

It seems fair play justice and morals don’t count.

    Really sad

  10. ROCK TREE BHOY

By their inaction, in my opinion, the board are covering their backs due to being up to their necks in the shit.

What other explanation can there be?

    Cheers Pablo

By genuine coincidence, I was going to post a comment on the previous thread about coefficients – when I noticed your “New Article Posted”.

    This is all very premature.

A quick look at the ‘number of teams still participating in Euro football’ stat on Bert K’s site is instructive.

Rabid “TWO CL PLACES” headlines are just another flavour of Old Firmism by the SMSM.

Only one imperative should matter to us viz “What needs to happen to allow Celtic direct entry without qualifiers”

    Hail hail

  12. Good evening CQN from a freeeeezing Garngad

Just turned on Radio Snyde, who is Peter who is on panel??? Is it Lawell?

    D. :)

  13. BACK TO BASICS

Hopefully the 2 CL places will be Celtic (of course) and Aberdeen.

Mind you, if the huns get a 100 million for Moreloss the ba’s up in the slates for us!

    Marspapa,

then a good price came in

Never had you down as a cynic :))

  15. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

    Philbhoy – Lol.

2nd CL slot is a red herring.

    – At least 2 (possibly 3) qualifiers

    – Sevco have only 3 years of coefficient gathering- unseeded all the way

  16. Off to Malaga for the weekend and will be in Timmy’s in Torreblanca for the March on Sunday.

    Costa del Sol CSC

  17. Paul, two Champions Lge places for the SPL. That’s some jigsaw you’ve worked out there but let’s say I’ll take your word for it.

  18. Canamalar and Marspapa

Biton was always a good player but sometimes gave the impression that football was a hobby rather than a profession. He has the potential to be outstanding.

  19. Thought I was safe posting this time of evening & Paul pulls a sly one with a new article at this time of evening leaving poor CorkCelt propping up the last thread as I have oft down before. Thought about copying & pasting it on new thread but re read it and said Naw it’s a heap of shite anyway best left unread.

  20. Almore……………nice to see some of the Dubs 5-in-a-row squad being feted in Celtic Park last weekend. Hope you see the game and enjoy the break.

  21. Hankray: Cheers. Would have been nice to be at CP for that.

Off to Don Juan which I think you’ve been to before?

  22. I thought Neil Lennon got his gameplan spot on last night. We were never threatened apart from one very good corner in the first half. And I thought we didn’t need to push ourselves to the limit to get the Win. That is Magical. those games drain you like no other when you are a Scottish Team in Europe.

We are looking a lot more in control of things and look excitingly potent going forward.

The 2nd half was at times sloppy but Celtic were Superb last night.

December is shaping up to be pivotal and to be able to have those extra few days off for the Ones who play Constantly, I reckon will be key for the 29th.

Next week – I’d say it is, factoring in the Refereeing scum 67 – 33 in Celtics favour.

Nobody knows anything Howevaaaaah © Kojo.

  23. prestonpans bhoys on

Reporting Scotland good lord what can you say about this mob we pay a license for. Huns could face sanctions for …….wait for it…….flares.

Honestly no comment on the real threat of ground closure I.e. racist singing. They are no number three sanction and that normally means ground closure, which is nice👍😁

  24. FRITZSONG

I agree , he has plenty of belief in his own ability too .

In Calmac and Christie he has players around him that can take the ball from him in any circumstance.

When i first saw him play , he made me think of Melman (the girraffe) from the kids film Madagascar, his languid style of running made him look slow and lazy ……

  25. Even taking into account that Celtic play more games than virtually everyone else in World football,is it not the case that our support ( on CQN) worry more re tiredness than do the supporters of any other Club?

Andy Robertson said that the players don`t mind how many games they play nor have I ever heard Calmac say he is tired. Also, do the Sevco fans worry about their smaller squad suffering from burn-out?

Does still being treated as less important than Sevco ( as demostrated yet again on Reporting Scotland this evening) when we most clearly are not, lead to our support still worrying about continued success ? Is the ten-in-a-row chant really for reassurance?

We ARE demonstrably the best team in Scotland. It is not just Lewis Morgan who needs to grow in belief.

    Marspapa,

Is that what you piss in when all urinals are taken

    :)))))))))

Glad to see you still have a sense of humour after the trials and tribulations of RES12.

Ps …. many thanks to you and the gang pushing this issue , all the best going forward with it .

  27. Hot Smoked,

Celtic have been dropping points in December mostly as far as I know.

Having the luxury of a Europa League night aff is Mega IMO.

After the Break Celtic kick on Big Style, normally. ;))

  28. Petec

I agree it is a good thing to be in a position to give very good players game time but my question remains: Do we ( Celtic supporters) worry overmuch re players becoming too tired?

  29. My top three have been sent to Jobo. I will be interested to see if anyone else selects the same number one as I have.

  30. My top 3 were, in order of merit:

    1. Fraser Forster

    2. Broonie

    3. Ryan Christie

    Sent earlier tonight.

    D. :)

  31. Gene

    Yes !

I thought that because it was a comfortable victory many would not notice just how well our big `keeper played:-)

    David

I selected neither Broonie nor Calmac. That might be a first for me. I think I would have had Bitton in there had he been on from the start. Christie was my Number 3.
