Avoiding bad Fortune

789

I read our treble-winning captain, Tom Boyd, in the Herald advising Celtic to retain players who want away or decline to sign new contracts, until after their Champions League qualification ties, an idea we discussed some time ago.  Tellingly he added, “They will see when they go down south it’s not always as bright down there as they think it will be”, perhaps a reference to his time in the Chelsea defence.

There is unlikely to be much difference in value achieved between selling before or after the qualifiers, so as long as the players stay on-side with Neil Lennon and the club, there will be no reason to sell before then.

Recruiting is a different matter.  Celtic will want players in as soon as possible but with all in-demand talent, selling clubs have little reason to cash-in before the business end of August.  For me, there are some on the list we are currently linked with (I’m trying to avoid stepping onto the speculation train as long as possible) who I’ll be happy to see sign elsewhere.  Half the battle in transfer windows is to avoid the bad Fortune of splurging money on players who don’t work out.

    Strange that stokes refused deal

Lenny wants him. He wants to stay.

    Should be straight forward.

    ———

Standard practice in most negotiations. Both parties will eventually strike a deal if they are keen to do so.

SoT-Stuart Pearce is Engerland U 21 coach……tells you all you need to know about them being so primitive in international football.

14:21 on 4 June, 2013Stuart Slater was a very talented footballer. He had one game against the Deid yins were he was outstanding, had several shots saved, and no luck what so ever, and we got beat.He was at Celtic at the wrong time. And it just didnt work.

I watched him for us, he was a player, just didn’t get that wee rub of the green, remember Tommy Coyne and Mark McGee initially having the same problem, then it clicked…

That is exactly the point I put to AD Bryce that the Derry story had the opposite effect from that claimed.

As it stands The Rangers are out of Europe for three years should they qualify via SC because they were liquidated and took their trading history with them.

The idea that a club and company can trade as seperate entities is absurd and would allow all clubs if Art12 did not stop it running a coach and horses through not only UEFA rules but normal business practice.

Did Southampton not try that ruse on England to get short shrift?

What happened in Scotland was the SFA hid behind the unpaid tax/ unaudited accounts reasons for not putting The Rangers forward for a licence knowing full well UEFA would knock such an application back for the same reasons they knocked back Derry City under Art 12.

Now if after 3 years exile UEFA decide to take an earlier coefficient into account they should clarify on what basis, but it was a leap of desperation to say it was because after 3 years UEFA treat Derry as the same club as the liquidated one.

To do so removes a disincentive for clubs to behave in a delinquent manner so UEFA might have some explaining to do.

Devasting news for you and your family -hope the treatment is successful. You will be in my prayers.

  11. Going back in for Doyle is underwhelming in the extreme. Decent enough player but poor scoring record, won’t improve and no sell on value. If we were to sign him & Russell then that would make it a bit more exciting a signing.

What Doyle would do is use his experience to help develop our young strikers like Watt and hopefully Russell. Hope Stokesy re-signs as well.

I am looking forward to seeing Doyle next season -in the english 3rd tier playing port vale -not for Celtic surely

Hamdump, Edinburgh, London, – and Nyon?

The one constant throughout the whole charade have been Celtic, who have remained silent recognising that we are unable and unwilling to become involved in the fraud, for fear of the safety continuation and wellbeing of Celtic supporters living in Scotland.

    Yes, it’s that serious.

In the long term the major shareholder in Celtic, has no vision or perspective of leading Celtic out of Glasgow, it’s the SPL and chipping away for SFA reform, or nothing.

European maurauding sevconians are a mirage, and like you say, it might never happen.

So, Richard Gough’s former ‘girlfriend’ has been busted with a houseful of cannabis and Neil Lennon is the main talking point in the headline and the story because he lives in the same building.

Admittedly, it is ridiculous to go with the ex-girlfriend of Gough angle.

  18. Tontime Tim @14.28,

More or less, agree with every word. Ghod, we had some wonderful footballers then, and Alex Byrne was one of the best. (No need for me to mention Charlie Gallagher again, as I have mentioned it repeatedly on here that he is my all time favourite Celtic player.)

STV Grant – Rangers will be unable to field any of their pre-contract signings for up to six games of the new season if league reconstruction plans are voted through.

STV has obtained a copy of the proposed rules for the new Scottish Professional Football League – the proposed single league body for senior football in the country.

The regulations forbid the use of trialists in any league match across all four divisions or in League Cup matches.
