Avoiding bad Fortune

789

I read our treble-winning captain, Tom Boyd, in the Herald advising Celtic to retain players who want away or decline to sign new contracts, until after their Champions League qualification ties, an idea we discussed some time ago.  Tellingly he added, “They will see when they go down south it’s not always as bright down there as they think it will be”, perhaps a reference to his time in the Chelsea defence.

There is unlikely to be much difference in value achieved between selling before or after the qualifiers, so as long as the players stay on-side with Neil Lennon and the club, there will be no reason to sell before then.

Recruiting is a different matter.  Celtic will want players in as soon as possible but with all in-demand talent, selling clubs have little reason to cash-in before the business end of August.  For me, there are some on the list we are currently linked with (I’m trying to avoid stepping onto the speculation train as long as possible) who I’ll be happy to see sign elsewhere.  Half the battle in transfer windows is to avoid the bad Fortune of splurging money on players who don’t work out.

  2. Doyle doesn’t fit the recruitment profile adopted of late. Too expensive. Too obvious. so unless we are getting him cheap then i don’t think he is a real target for us.

We don’t know what is going in the background. Who really knows what the real demand is for Russell. There are a lot of Players, Manages etc. on their Holidays just now. MSM making some stuff up, some will be close, remember they have to earn a crust themselves.

Doyle fails all sorts of tests, in my opinion three most important ones: too much wages, doesn’t score enough goals and no resale value. We can do better, although Lenny does see something, what I don’t know but his decision? most have worked out thus far.

It was the message I was trying to get across but I’m afraid some of our CQN posters look as if they have taken a leaf from the Scoddish MSM and chose to edit bits and pieces of my post and NOT the complete post.

I WAS a BIG fan of Alec Byrne when he played for the reserves and despite what some of our fellow CQN ‘rs think, I was not intentionally critical of his footballing talent, which was considerable.

A few days ago, someone else on here ran into some unfair criticism for posting what were construed as negative comments (can’t remember the exact details) which, after review and analysis were shown not to be the case.

Unlike RFC(IL), Southampton actually had a holding company. The holding company was put into administration with debts of £27.5m, reportedly made up of financial liabilities of £23.1m and an overdraft of £4.4m.

At the time there were claims that it was possible that putting the parent/holding company into administration could save the club from a 10-point deduction. (a lot of hearsay at the time).

However, despite the rumours, Southampton were still handed a 10 point deduction. This deduction ensured that Southampton were relegated from the Championship and played the 2009–10 season in League One. So in effect even they were unable to use the old ‘its the holding company, not the club’ argument.

I don’t think Sevco will win the Scottish Cup anytime soon however, if they did it would be interesting to see what Uefa’s party line is – will it be ineligible due to the lack of 3 years audited accounts or simply due to them being a new/reformed club just like Derry City.

However, if Uefa are now saying that reformed clubs will effectively be treated as the Old Liquidated Club after a period of 3 years and coefficient points will be added after this period of time then its a free for all for any Club wishing to shed debt and who are prepared to take a 3 year exile from European football.

  20. Maybe Lenny thinks we have enough armour to beat SPL teams and is looking to sign someone who can do it in the CL.

Doubt Russell would shine in the CL.

  21. Honest mistake

Care to wager £100 on that?

The consequence of not having audited accounts is exclusion for the year to which t hat licence application applies. NOT three years.

Even the Rangers IPO says The Rangers are excluded for three years and the only rule producing that result is Article 12 which is NOT about accounts. The SFA were misleading on that point.

Uefa might refuse to answer but if they do they have to answer on the same basis as Derry were exluded.

The SFA put it out to msm that unaudited accounts and unpaid tax were reasons for UEFA not being asked to grant a licence and whilst that was true last summer as soon as audited accounts are produced and tax is paid a case could be made were it not for Article 12 which requires a club (and UEFA clarify what that is and it was Rangers as was and The Rangers as is) to be a member of a national association for three years.

The Rangers like Derry fail on this point hence in UEFA eyes are a different club.
