ANGE POSTECOGLOU is heading for the sack at Spurs – and only a Europa League triumph will save his job.
That’s the verdict from one-time Ibrox boss Graeme Souness as pressure mounts on the former Celtic gaffer at the London club.
Postecoglou quit Parkhead a couple of days after guiding the Hoops to a silverware clean sweep following the 3-1 Scottish Cup Final success over Inverness Caley Thistle at Hampden on June 3 2023.
The Greek/Australian led the team to five trophies, including back-to-back title wins, in his two years after being named as the long-term successor to Neil Lennon in the summer of 2021.
Ange is now under fire with Spurs faltering in the Premier League and that has opened the way for some ferocious criticism – and Souness has joined in to insist he can’t see Postecoglou surviving without a trophy.
THE LAST HURRAH…Ange Postecoglou holds aloft the Scottish Cup after Celtic’s 3-1 success over Inverness Caley Thistle in June 2023 – just before his move to Spurs.
Spurs are scheduled to meet Eintracht Frankfurt in the quarter-final of Europe’s secondary competition next month.
Souness, speaking in the Daily Mail, said: “Winning the Europa League trophy may be the only way Ange Postecoglou remains in a job.
“Indeed, he must rue the day he declared that he always wins something in the second season.
“Standing 13th in the Premier League was never going to be in Daniel Levy’s plan when they built that stadium and training ground.
“They envisaged being in the Champions League and competing to win something every year. I know they have had a lot of injuries, but that is not unique to Spurs and others have coped better than they have.”
Since those comments, Spurs have dropped down a place in the standings after their 2-0 loss to Fulham at Craven Cottage. It was the team’s 15th league reverse of the season in 29 games.
