Axing the Act one vote at a time

849

I was at primary school during the 1979 devolution referendum.  It’s fair to say many in the Celtic community were suspicious of the SNP due to the hostile attitudes some of the party leadership had to the Irish diaspora in their midst.

Fresh blood brought change to the SNP in the 1980s, there were even overtures to Irish nationalism.  Alex Salmond cemented these changes, broadened the appeal of the party towards new and multi-generation immigrants, and asserted the SNP’s multi-faith credentials.  He also became close friends with disgraced Cardinal O’Brien (which is no reflection on Mr Salmond).

At the height of his political powers Salmond appears to have overreached.  Something would be done about men shouting at football games.  From now on only certain flavours of nationalism would be favoured, acceptable, perhaps even legal.  MSP Christine Graham let the Scottish Parliament know, the problem was that Celtic fans were not acting illegally, so the law had to change.

The Axe the Act candidate in today’s Glasgow City Council, Govan, by-election, Thomas Rannachan has brought the consequences of Salmond’s largess to his door.  The SNP are defending the seat but one year out from the battle Salmond really needs to win, his shoddy attack on football fans is set to undermine him.  As an independent Rannachan may not win, but he has put the First Minister on the back foot.

George Ryan’s funeral will take place at St Andrew’s Cathedral, Glasgow, at 10:00 on Monday. All are welcome.

Something similar happened to me a couple of years back …

Turns out my wee son had reached 14 years of age, my wife had left me and I’d lost my job.

  4. Afternoon all.

I was listening to SSB last night, as is the norm on that show if you sound any way intelligent you’re cut off immediately which was the case with the caller Mark. He asks BFDJ if anything he said about McCoist asking “who are these people” was factually incorrect. Cut off but BFDJ continues as if he’s still on air (we’ve worked that one out now SSB) Then someone asks an inquisitive question about Dave King. He is also cut off and then someone phones up about the spivs and shysters on the current board i.e the Easdales. Jim Delahunt then says because that man done his time for fraud that should be the end of the matter (or words to that effect)

It got me thinking to the guy Di Steffano at Dundee. He received loads of abuse because of his links to various dodgy characters by the SMSM. I get the feeling if he’d got some of his dodgy pals to invest in Rangers and not Dundee not a word would be spoken. If the money came from Saddam Hussein, Arkan, Ronnie Biggs, Milosevic or a Columbian drug baron (or a Glasgow drug baron for that matter) the SMSM would care not a jot as long as Rangers were back on top.

It seems now guys like Dave King and Easdale are now legitimate businessmen (a bit like Fat Tony in the Simpsons) and if you dare to ask questions about these guys you are given short shrift by their pals in the media.

After hearing the Cardigan saying you basically just need to find the money to fund Rangers as is the fans demands I hope King isn’t long in saying goodbye to his fortune (however dodgily he came to getting it)

  8. Interesting article Paul

    I remember 1979 well.

There was no shortage of Labour folk willing to conduct a whispering campaign to the effect that an SNP Government would set about shutting Catholic Schools.

Oddly enough I did not see any Labour MPs, even so called Celtic Minded ones clamouring to add supporting signatures to George Gallows’s Early Day Motion concerning recent events

at Ibrox. We can only assume that this is another case of Labour Party loyalty coming before personal belief.

Don’t know whats going on – man shot dead last night in Belfast and another in Derry this morning

On my way home last night in rush hour on North Queen Street and about 6 peelers with rifles running up the middle of the road then all sorts of unmarked cars start coming out of every where driving up the pavement etc nothing on the news so reckon some poor blokes been lifted

Then this morning North Queen Street closed due to ‘security alert’ funny its in the same area that all the peelers were running about yesterday – I wonder who’s dropped something

Place is starting to go a bit nuts again !!!!!!!!

Are you saying if I post:

Read the roll of honour for Ireland’s bravest men

We must be united in memory of the ten,

England you’re a monster, don’t think that you have won

We will never be defeated while Ireland has such sons.

In those dreary H-Block cages ten brave young Irishmen lay

Hungering for justice as their young lives ebbed away,

For their rights as Irish soldiers and to free their native land

They stood beside their leader – the gallant Bobby Sands.

Now they mourn Hughes in Bellaghy,

    Ray McCreesh in Armagh’s hills

In those narrow streets of Derry they miss O’Hara still,

They so proudly gave their young lives to break Britannia’s hold

Their names will be remembered as history unfolds.

Through the war torn streets of Ulster the black flags did sadly sway

To salute ten Irish martyrs the bravest of the brave,

Joe McDonnell, Martin Hurson, Kevin Lynch, Kieran Doherty

They gave their lives for freedom with Thomas McElwee.

Michael Devine from Derry you were the last to die

With your nine brave companions with the martyred dead you lie

Your souls cry out “Remember, our deaths were not in vain.

Fight on and make our homeland a nation once again !”

..I may be breaking the law? What if everyone does that?

“SO WER’E GUILTY ONE AND ALL”…

  11. Have to admit I take very little interest in the goings on at our old foe’s. Couldn’t really care less what they call themselves, where they play or what they claim to have won.

I noticed a news article on the Skysport web-site that Ally McCoist was supporting the return of Dave King as Chairman. What is wrong with these people? Not only has he been accused of being a fraudster, to the tune of c$100m, he was on the board when the old Rangers were cheating their way to the top in Scottish football, neglecting to pay taxes and failing to pay numerous bills. Have they absolutely no shame?

  19. @BTWCelticShow: Belgian reporters asking Lierse manager why he doesn’t start Tony Watt, “Tony has obvious football qualities but isn’t fit enough to go 90”

Thats an embaressment for celtic and the management team, every player should be at peak fitness when at a club like celtic. Maybe thats why we pick up so many injuries.

Speaking off unfit players..anyone see the videos of mccourts last 2 games for barnsley. Looks to be doing great.

My signal poor here but i think thwy are on yourube. Try focus mccourt

  23. proudbhoy

You leap to the wrong conclusion.

The fault for Tony’s fitness is not Celtic’s, it is Tony’s. That is why he was shipped out- to a last chance saloon team. We are giving him a chance to preserve his career.

Tony’s fitness does not reflect on the fitness of any other Celtic player anymore than Scott Brown’s superb fitness means that Barca trainers are not doing their job well.

  24. Regarding the Celtic Trust article, and this is not my view, I’d say that casting men that some folk view as terrorists and calling them martyrs, which is a heroic term to many people could be seen as offensive.

Other than that, I can’t see it myself and I think an explanation is required.

  25. Hamiltontim is praying for Oscar on

Sitting in the car presently having just been in to Firhill to see about purchasing tickets for the game against us later this month.

Having taken myself up a stairway I found myself in an office area and waited behind an elderly gentleman who was buying 5 tickets for the home section.

Whilst admiring the surroundings an employee of PTFC, Gerry Britton, appeared through a door inscribed PTFC youth academy and proceeded to use a photocopier nearby.

The elderly gentleman then enquired of the girl serving him where the Celtic support would be situated at the game. He was informed of the areas which are designated to us and asked why we weren’t being allocated any of the main stand.

At this point Mr Britton piped up,

    “Because they can’t be trusted!”

At what point is it that ex Celts disengage from our ethos, traditions and support?????

  26. DeniaBhoy in awe of wee Oscar's Courage on

ProudBhoy – I’ve been asking the same question for years. I would love to see an honest comparison of the fitness regimes at places like Madrid, Bayern Munich and ourselves. How many hours are spent on strength and conditioning, endurance, sprints, etc. How do the teams differ on their approach to diet and nutrition, recovery after games, team-building activities etc.

I will never forget the the Polish coach saying that when he got Boruc from Celtic for international tournaments he had to put him on a pre-season fitness regime to shed the fat and sharpen him up. It is crazy that we could allow one of the world’s top goalkeepers to be so out of shape while he was our our no.1 choice.
