Axing the Act one vote at a time

849

I was at primary school during the 1979 devolution referendum.  It’s fair to say many in the Celtic community were suspicious of the SNP due to the hostile attitudes some of the party leadership had to the Irish diaspora in their midst.

Fresh blood brought change to the SNP in the 1980s, there were even overtures to Irish nationalism.  Alex Salmond cemented these changes, broadened the appeal of the party towards new and multi-generation immigrants, and asserted the SNP’s multi-faith credentials.  He also became close friends with disgraced Cardinal O’Brien (which is no reflection on Mr Salmond).

At the height of his political powers Salmond appears to have overreached.  Something would be done about men shouting at football games.  From now on only certain flavours of nationalism would be favoured, acceptable, perhaps even legal.  MSP Christine Graham let the Scottish Parliament know, the problem was that Celtic fans were not acting illegally, so the law had to change.

The Axe the Act candidate in today’s Glasgow City Council, Govan, by-election, Thomas Rannachan has brought the consequences of Salmond’s largess to his door.  The SNP are defending the seat but one year out from the battle Salmond really needs to win, his shoddy attack on football fans is set to undermine him.  As an independent Rannachan may not win, but he has put the First Minister on the back foot.

George Ryan’s funeral will take place at St Andrew’s Cathedral, Glasgow, at 10:00 on Monday. All are welcome.

I personally doubt there is an appetite for unification in NI.

The Catholic part of the electorate will shortly have the upper hand, and be able to run the Six Counties pretty much as they please, within reason.

  3. In the indie debate the only stance that I’ve consistently made is that a Yes vote is not necessarily and SNP vote, and I stand by that.

Nobody can accurately predict what will happen in an independent Scotland. Maybe it will be a Golden Dawn. Maybe nothing will fundamentally change.

A lot of No opinions seem to be driven by fear.

It’s very interesting that some fear a rise in Catholic oppression. If you’ve ever seen an indie debate on a Rangers site, they fear the creeping rise of Catholic power in an independent Scotland or at the extreme end a tightening of the grip on power that Catholic’s allegedly have(that’s a summary anyway). That suggests to me that if anything not much will change in that respect.

I doubt Yes will win anyway. We’ll end up with more powers and the SNP reign will continue.

My prediction is a surprisingly high no vote and for the SNP to implode in the aftermath.

Government – no appetite. The Dublin political class backed by a traditionally unionist national media have no appetite for reunification.

In terms of people, a recent IT poll showed the vast majority of people in the south wanted reunification. Most people were prepared to pay higher taxes for it to come about – despite the worst recession in Irish State history.

    Hmmmm……

Betcha Salmond already has his Plan B in place where he blames NOT having sufficient leeway from Westminster to properly influence the vote.

And use this to demand more autonomy now that independence is dead for the time-being.

It will end with a Scottish fiefdom run largely independently from Westminster, but protected by UK defence and economy.

All the politicians win. Guess who loses.

You could be right, although when the SNP came to power the polls suggested the Yes vote was at around 30%. BBC reported it as 41% on 18th September.

I doubt they’ll impolde. There’ll be a flurry of populist policies and they’ll either keep their majority or at the worst be the major player in a coalition – maybe getting enough seats to need just the Lib Dems and/or some other minority group.

it’s Salmond’s policies that would encourage me to vote no.

    =====

Salmond is ” a mere transient”

One can vote for independence whilst disagreeing with Salmond about everything else.

I would think that a ‘Yes’ vote would, in time, presage a change in the Scottish political landscape. For a start, the raison d’être for the existence of a SNP would have been removed.

There would be many who voted ‘Yes’ who would then look to a reconfigured Scottish Labour/ Tory/ Socialist/ Liberal to create the their kind of Scotland.

The ‘mere transient’ was uttered by Robin Day to John Nott just before he left the studio in high dudgeon. Just in case, anyone accuses me of plagiarism.

Yes and I think that forms part of the debate for Irish Republicans as to whether they vote yes or no. As JS pointed out in his article it’s been a question that has split the Irish community in Scotland for some time and will continue to do so!

An Dun – I don’t expect a Yes outcome in Scotland to suddenly change the age old nationalist unionist question but it may galvanise support for an all Ireland referendum. Likewise I don’t expect a Yes vote will lead to a United Ireland but it allows the constitutional debate to move to another level.

As for Ernie – sorry you might be a really nice guy and I might agree with you on a number of other things but your continued habit of insulting posters means from now I will be scrolling on by….
