Back pages filled with empty nonsense

My inbox today was full of angst at the latest series of ‘favourites’ for the manager’s job.  There are upwards of 20 journalists working on this story right now, each of whom need to push the story on every day.

No information?  Tough, write something.  Not found a single person Peter Lawwell has spoken to?  Hard lines, get Ownie’s neighbour’s granny on again, she’ll be good for a word.

Who’s fault is this?  The journos are just doing a job, the media have space to fill – and it will be filled with any type of speculation.  We all know the rules so why take the bait?

By the time the news of Neil’s resignation leaked out on Thursday Celtic’s moves were already underway.  Potential candidates jockeyed for position in the limelight for a couple of days, and for most cases they were disappointed the call didn’t arrive.  Even Henrik was talking about returning to Celtic at one point, only to reaffirm his commitment to his current employers a couple of days later.

Agents will also be busy offering their clients, Celtic will respond respectfully, but just because an agent opens a one-sided dialogue doesn’t mean meaningful dialogue is taking place.  Celtic will also speak to applicants out of courtesy.  If a former player or prominent candidate asks to be considered, you can expect Celtic to meet them, whether they have a genuine interest or not.

>90% of this activity will be fruitless.  Some of it will seep out into the public domain but it is vastly more likely that those wanting to raise their profile make the newspapers, as opposed to those Celtic have approached.

I agree – cheap shot in Daily Record hotline. Obviously the Daily Record believes it can rewrite history using the extremist views of Hotline users

Speaking of bloody noses, John Bruce emailed: “In his 14 years with Celtic as a player and coach, Neil Lennon was known for his aggressive demeanour, both on and off the park.

“Now that the club are looking for a successor, it would appear that they have a natural replacement waiting to step in. This man’s credentials include being able to work with a limited budget and, crucially for the fans, he is
“Celtic-minded” as he is a former player for the club.

“Oh, and he was also involved in an alleged assault outside a nightclub last week so, for that, David Moyes must be a shoe-in for the job.”

Is this appropriate for the record to print? Bombs, bullets, assaults, imaginary assaults on camera at Tynecastle, Facebook swords, Twitter death threats, 14 years of intimidation and violence.

Will anyone from the Daily Record come on and explain why it’s editors have allowed this to be printed?

Had actually weakened in my boycott over last few weeks (from Thugs and Thieves), but this is enough to remind me.

And still no cracked Rangers crest or did I miss it?

  7. Lawwell should chose himself to continue managing the club – he’s done well this past few seasons…

  10. CL qualifier 7 weeks tomorrow. Speed of appointment is of the essence. The new man needs to get in access squad and make signings (providing funds are available) ahead of pre season training which is only 3-4 weeks away.

Speculation will be rife for as long as it takes to make an appointment.

    From last thread.

I fine well remember that, a joke, but tis the way is it not.

Been racking the brains to remember the last thing a government did for the people, something that actually helped the people, and the only thing I can honestly come up with is the NHS, and they have fecked that up for the people.

And they expect us to vote for them, dearie me.

It’s a sad, sad state of affairs when someone is willing to spend half a million euros just to get elected to the local local council, tis what some have done in Dublin, I wonder why that would be then, roon the lot of them.

Excellent article Paul. *just catching up*

The longer the vacancy runs the shorter the odds will become on Owen Coyle, – it’s what ‘they’ want.

I think Celtic were surprised by NFL’s decision and we’re in for a lengthy recruitment exercise, stretching into the summer.

  14. Coolmore Mafia on

The implication, in case anyone from the Record is reading, is of course NL is inherently aggressive both off and on the pitch, (can we imply violent even here?).

Davie Moyes allegedly assaulted someone outside a nightclub (actually in wine bar), therefore he is displaying the ‘natural’ tendencies of the previous manager NL.

In fact someone currently under Police investigation for assault is “a natural replacement” for NL and Celtic.

Are you reading this Record journalists? – this is what your editors are reducing you to- a grotesque side show of discombobulated disinformation, thankfully falling in influence daily. To think I used to yearn for the Record to appear every day. It will be staffed exclusively by 21 year old students working for peanuts in 5 years.

If John Park goes to Norwich, embdae think he will come back for Balde,Pukki and Derk ?…….me neither..

  16. nakasammi,

Yes,I really do think we have to revamp our thinking.Seems very strange to me that so many on here are plumping for someone from the EPL.Maybe I was a bit harsh on Big Malky earlier, but he did spend money, and at the end of the day,his team were relegated.

Just cant see for the life of me why Moyes is wanted. Most Evertonians, while thankful not to be relegated, were never enamoured by their playing style.I know a good few.As I said, look at the difference Martinez has made.Much more vibrant now.

This going to be a really important decision for Celtic,as the decline in attendances, has to be stopped.Having supported Celtic for over 50 years, not one of the current list would excite me back,if I had become a bit bored,or lazy in my attending.

Same old, same old for me.This could be a chance to get the fans buzzing again.I hope to god they dont blow it.

    Paul 67,

Your article infers that we had already made some progress, before NL’s announcement.

The key thing for me is a robust process.

Ignore sentiment and identify the 3/4 must haves , and the 3/4 like to haves then identify the guys who fit this bill.

For me, outstanding options are McKay and Clarke, but, I didn’t know a lot about Martinez when we tried for him, so there will be others.

And on Martinez, it would be worth a call to Swansea.

Their track record on managers is excellent – Rogers, Martinez, Laudrup etc.

What is their process, and can we hire their HR manager?

  20. leftclicktic. Thanks for that. It was the only part of 26th May I missed. I was still in Estoril.

Owen Coyle is now odds on favourite to get job with most bookies. He is as short as 1/2.

    tipped him on Friday.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  23. Moyes would be too expensive. A Rangers fan and never won anything anyway. Would be just looking to get a move back to the ‘best league in the world’.

Coyle already had his chance and turned it down. Would also be wanting a quick move down south if successful.

Malky, too, would be off before long…although he’s my fave for now.

Failing all the above, it’s got to be Janet Krankie.

  24. The morning after we won in Lisbon was a beautiful sunny morning on the. North Lanarkshire Savannah.

I was out back polishing my shoes and watching my shoes before getting my lift to work.

My dad and I were watching a constant stream of turbo props headed back to Abbottsinch, like a flight of WWII bombers returning from a raid on Europe.

Some looked on their last legs and were flying low enough to worry the sheep on the Campsies.

When the kettle boiled he popped inside to make a cup of much needed tea.

As he did so I let out a roar

“Look at this one. The fans are sitting on the wings.”

He came running out with the kettle splashing saying “Where?”

He then realized he had been had for once, and I never let him forget it.

  25. Just has a look on Oddschecker. Worrying. Coyle odds on with every bookmaker. Malky Mackey now looking like an acceptable option!!

I’d be happy with Owen Coyle, some of the other ‘candidates’ mentioned terrify me. He’s no rookie, he knows the game well both sides of the border, and he’s ‘Celtic minded’. Plus I hear his granny is no a bad looker…

  28. Whoever we get is going to be constantly asked whether he’s looking forward to playing Rangers.

Let’s hope he has the nuts to remind them that the dead team is dead.

If they want to completely empty the stadium then appointing Coyle will achieve this. Media friendly, so our media compliant board will like him but if he is the best we can get then mediocrity is a lot closer than I thought. Welcome to the early 90s if OC gets the job.
