Back pages filled with empty nonsense

My inbox today was full of angst at the latest series of ‘favourites’ for the manager’s job.  There are upwards of 20 journalists working on this story right now, each of whom need to push the story on every day.

No information?  Tough, write something.  Not found a single person Peter Lawwell has spoken to?  Hard lines, get Ownie’s neighbour’s granny on again, she’ll be good for a word.

Who’s fault is this?  The journos are just doing a job, the media have space to fill – and it will be filled with any type of speculation.  We all know the rules so why take the bait?

By the time the news of Neil’s resignation leaked out on Thursday Celtic’s moves were already underway.  Potential candidates jockeyed for position in the limelight for a couple of days, and for most cases they were disappointed the call didn’t arrive.  Even Henrik was talking about returning to Celtic at one point, only to reaffirm his commitment to his current employers a couple of days later.

Agents will also be busy offering their clients, Celtic will respond respectfully, but just because an agent opens a one-sided dialogue doesn’t mean meaningful dialogue is taking place.  Celtic will also speak to applicants out of courtesy.  If a former player or prominent candidate asks to be considered, you can expect Celtic to meet them, whether they have a genuine interest or not.

>90% of this activity will be fruitless.  Some of it will seep out into the public domain but it is vastly more likely that those wanting to raise their profile make the newspapers, as opposed to those Celtic have approached.

    Too too soon for McMullan.

The rigours of playing 90 minutes regularly would have him on the physio bench more often than James Forrest.

The demands of the modern game take a toll on limbs and lungs.

He needs a couple of seasons being weaned gently.

I would offer Fisher, Henderson, Herron, O’Connel and McMullan on loan to a second tier team, on the condition that it is to one team and they play a minimum of 15 games and a maximum of 25.

Paul Kimmage has a great interview with Tony Cascarino in yesterday’s Sunday Independent and Cas gives an interseting insight into Keano’s charachter.

TC…Roy has a lot of qualities, but I think one area he has always struggled is dealing with people. I remember one incident with Jason McAteer before a game, we were sitting around the dinner table and Jason says “Roy mate” and Roy stops him and says, “I’m not your mate” and Jason says. “What?”. And Roy says “you said mate. I”m not your mate. I don’t have mates in football” Jason was just a kid at the time and Roy went for him and totally embarrassed him. But that’s enough about Keaney.

    PK Tell me more.

TC He always thought Mick McCarthy was a phoney hardman. I can remember training sessions where you just knew he was testing Mick and for me the World Cup in Saipan was the ultimate.

    PK The ultimate test

TC Yeah, you talk to people at Man Utd and it was not just my old pal Teddy Sheringham who told me this – but he carried on like that with Fergie and he undermined Fergie on numerous occasions or moments in the dressin room when he should have been chalenged but was let go. It happened with Jap Stam; he had a right go at Jaap Stam. The other players thought Stam would be the one to stand up to him which didn’t happen.

Roy challenged people all the time. He got away with it because he was a good footballer

TC As a manager you can’t clash with your best players. That’s my answer. I don’t question Mick and I don’t question Fergie and I’m not saying they were afraid of him, but there was always a consequence when you clashed with Roy

Couldn’t help noticing the pavement cafe culture breaking out in Springfield Road this weekend.

The Roll Shop next to London Road Taverna had 3 tables and chairs outside and The New Dairy opposite and next to The Springfield Vaultio had same.

Whilst parked outside the Roll Shop waiting for Mrs.Rye exiting with two well fired with Skwerr slice on, overheard a wee local wummin’s agitated tone screaming across the road at a fat inebriated man in a Sevco shirt .Their topic of discussion was how ridiculous it was that it was impossible to get a bus in Springfield Road because of the diversions caused by the bead rattlers and their feckin building work.

Yep,the Eastend of Glasgow Sevconians are hurting at the improvements to their environment.

In your photo….Do you think Yogi is trying to race the wee wummin to get served first in Flynns or is he trying to get the 64 bus to stop and take them all to Barrowfield ?

Succession planning is speaking to DM at the CP Barca game in April 2004 to see if he would be interested in the post MON gig.

For the record the dream team would he HL / SC combo.

SC is best in a head coach role / HL needs support at this stage.

Not sure if all the egos can be aligned.

PL and JP will need to be fitted in as well.

Alternatives — M McK would be a good shout.

The ex Brighton man would be another.

If we take the internal route we may have a candidate in the wings.

JP seemingly wants to grow into a larger role — SC as his coach tactics guru?

  21. Kojo

I don’t know why we stopped sending players out to the juniors.

We had loads of success sending the Lions out for a wee toughening up period.

As I recall, most of them spent a season at a junior side.

Billy at Blantyre, Bertie at Maryhill and Lennox at Ardeer from memory.

Big Yogi went straight into the first team from St Pats but he was exceptional,

as every ex St Patrick pupil is.

    Sounds like a sound plan.

The buoys could all train at. CP retaining the style and hire a wee coach to Carlisle.

Somebody would need to ensure there was no cargo on the return trip. :-)

    What standard are they?
