Back to Celtic Park, CQN prediction from February on Castore deal

350

News that fans could be able to attend games from the middle of next month is very welcome.  Lots can happen between now and then but Celtic Park with a reduced capacity is better than an empty Celtic Park.

For those attending, the process of gaining entry to the ground will feel onerous; more like being allowed onto a flight than into a stadium.  A trial-run next week against Motherwell, even if only for 1,000 of us, will be useful to check processes before more significant numbers arrive.

On 20 February this year, a day after Newco advertised on their website for a kit partner, I told you production runs for replica football kit were such, that getting a deal done and shirts on shelves for this season in any volume was impossible.  I wrote, “manufacturing slots are booked in March or early April.  These are high volume items, production cannot be arrange doff the cuff.

“Multi-million pound contracts with any serious manufacturer will require scoping and due diligence, this could take weeks, if not longer.”

There are a small number of manufacturing facilities in the world that can produce these garments in volume, the major brands all use them and production slots are booked – to the minute – months out.

When Newco and Castore announced their deal in May and promised to ship in August, two possibilities occurred to me: I was wrong, or they were both flying by the seat of their threadbare pants.

Yesterday, the kit supplier apologised for adding Castore and Newco logos to school sweatshirts (busted as they had not gone to the trouble of changing details on the washing label).  They also apologised for shipping top quality replica tops from China to some fans, when they intended to only ship inferior kit, manufactured at a location in Turkey.  Yes, really.

Fans are now comparing shirts with a similar quality to any other replica football top, and something that costs the same as any other replica top, but is a very inferior product.

Getting things right in football costs money, takes time and experience.  If you think you can breeze into this industry, bang a few heads together and deliver a world-class deal, you have world-class arrogance.

Newco’s commercial director, James Bisgrove, was less than a year in the job when he put an email address on the club website asking kit suppliers to get in touch.  To be fair to him, it was a terrible position to be in, but he signed a deal without the scoping and due diligence that would prevent fans suffering this debacle.  He does not have the experience required to do the job.

In February, before Castore were even a glint in the Newco eye, I wrote that their new kit deal, “will be a poor contract and it will perform badly for all concerned.”  But all of us who have been paying attention for the last 8 years (and the 12 before) knew that.

Your right I’m voting for independence !

The SNP folds once they have achieved their goal then it’s back to normal political allegiances. Might even vote Labour if they can find a bit of socialism in their soul.

    Says who?

That’s not, and never has been, party policy.

  6. Saint Stivs pic. I am sure that is Bobby Carrol. He was the first Celtic player to score in a European competition.

  7. As I said already, the answers are out there, seek and ye shall find. I have no need to justify myself to satisfy the egos of others. Research is the key.

  8. Anybody watching this Europa Cup Final and thinking – “we could compete against this lot”….

We really do underperform in Europe.

  9. Fries … @ 8.27

So you don’t have any figures then — winging it while singing Caledonia.

    All froth and no substance.

  10. BIG WAVY,

I expect many more supporters across Europe think that their club is under performing in Europe.

  11. The crowd sound effects in this game are spot on, you hardly miss them. Compare to last nights St Johnstone Aberdeen game where they had the sound effects of 4 guys murmuring in a corner

  12. What the Scottish and Irish Unionists on here fail to realise is this.

England has not only declared Independence, it has, whether we like it or not, achieved it.

    Scotland needs to do likewise.

  13. Far be it for me to have the audacity to post on SNP Quick News and talk about football but tomorrow…….no excuses, grass park, 3-points, full stop.

Equally, I expect the same against the Hungarians next week. Bayern Munich they ain’t and if we can’t take advantage of a home draw , against a team who are eminently beatable, then we shouldn’t be anywhere near the champions league. Players and manager (tactics and team selection) need to meet this modest challenge, which is all it is.

Labouring the CH and LB signings a bit but I’m sure Lawell & Lennon will have matters in hand and will act before it’s too late.

  14. Agree, what a difference the background sounds make. Great game Seville v Inter.

Incidentally, what a difference three stripes make. The Adidas logo on our North Stand now looks the part.

  15. think ive told the story 1969 semi final against leeds, went to hampden early doors it was still about 2hours from kick off, it was a sea of green and white, not a parking place to be had, we found this little space between 2 cars, we bumped the car into the space i kid you not ,now ive got bad claustraphobia, when i got outside hampden and seen the crush trying to get in, i gave my ticket away and listened to the game on a transistor radio, when they opened the gates just after half time, i ran up the terracing and seen a sight i will never forget a sea of green and white end to end, how many were in the ground that night is open to debate, but i reckon a record crowd.H,H,

  16. If I was Scottish, I would most certainly want Independence.

I wouldn’t be afraid of the SNP post Independence.

Maybe initially they would be dominant but once Independence is achieved bread & butter politics would come to the fore, as in most Countries A Right wing , a left wing & a Centrist Party would emerge, possibly a Green Party as well,

Scotland would like most Countries would be governed by various Coalitions some time right leaning other times left leaning.

The English first past the post & single Party either Conservative or Labour rule is a rarity in most Democracies where Coalitions are the norm.

  17. Big Packy

I got a lift over the turnstile in that game. I don’t think my feet were ever on the ground during the whole game. I was literally passed down the slope overhead to near the front. By the way….even at that age with not a care in the world….it was pretty scary

  18. JHB on 21ST AUGUST 2020 5:48 PM said “Any Catholic/Irish/Celtic person voting for SNP Independence, is a turkey voting for an early Christmas.”

Probably one of the most offensive generalisations I’ve ever read on here. I’m away to swear vociferously in private.

  19. BIG PACKY,

Was at the Leeds game with my brother.

We were mid upper terracing opposite the main stand. Could hardly move because of the record attendance. Don’t remember much about actual game other than goals. We walked back to Glasgow centre. Got back to Clydebank for a late pint to celebrate.

  20. Big Packy

Strangely I think because a season is over 2 separate years…..ie….’69-‘70, it’s easy to get the actual date wrong

We’d get well beat by either of these teams

  23. JIM SPENCE: A visit from Scotland’s most successful club is a special occasion and a very severe test of Dundee United’s credentials…the odds heavily favour Celtic

  24. I grew up in Townhead (Glasgow variety)

Me and my pals could walk to Parkhead, Shawfield, Firhill and Hampden easily. We went to every home game and away games at the aforementioned and basically got “a lift ower mister”

That included semis and finals. Never Ibrox or Cathkin Park. Wouldn’t go near ibrox and Third Lanark weren’t in our division then
