Backfill defender first

125

Brendan Rodgers was a bit too relaxed looking when announcing the probable departure of Carl Starfelt this week.  You could interpret this as a sign the ‘news’ was not news to him and that a plan to accommodate was at a mature state.

Reports from Sweden yesterday suggest we are interested in Gustaf Lagerbielke (23), central defender at Elfsborg.  Like Carl, Gustaf can play on the left, despite being right footed, he won his first Sweden cap in a friendly this year.

Both Maik Nawrocki (22) and Gustaf have first team experience at a top club a league of similar calibre to the Scottish Premiership.  Unlike the rest of our central defenders, Gustaf is midseason, so will be fully fit as Scottish football drags itself up the summer hill.

If he is coming, it would be good to get him in and settled before our trip to joint-top Kilmarnock on League Cup duty later this month.  As ever, Celtic will want backfill sorted before releasing Carl.

  1. hoping we pull off the swede and the dutch lads – been saying since we let Jenz go, we lacked height and were never a threat at corners and usually scrambling with high balls defensively.

Both players linked look good on the ball too and can grow with hoops.

Interesting we are not linked with LB’s (other than unlikely Tierney) – maybe Rodgers considering 3 at the back

    Would make (finger trouble)

Carl is at an age where he is managing his career progression.

Whereas this young fellow has been doing 1 year tours of duty with various B-teams.

And, from the deal that recently fell through?

He seems awfully inexpensive for the next Virgil?

We’re not buying both fella. We have potentially 7 in the squad – CCV, Namrocki, Welsh, Scales, Kobyashi & Lawal (and now coming in Lagerbielke)….we’ll end up with 4.

Scales to Dons, Kobyashi back to Japan, Lawal to Italy & Welsh stays. 4 Centre Halves.

The name Gudmundssen at Lille was mentioned at LB early in the window. Tall and quick. KT is a long shot but suspect Rodgers will have seen we need an upgrade there.

    3 interesting weeks to go.

  5. IF the Swedish Boy named ” GUSTAF”….DOES sign for Celtic, will he become known as ” GUS” to his team mates and the Celtic support ?

    Why not ?

  6. I was a little underwhelmed with our initial transfer business. I felt we were slightly weaker than last season, with no obvious Brendan stamp on our shopping list.

Well, the past few days have lightened the mood somewhat. We appear to be replacing with some thought, more sense of the new gaffer having his wish list worked.

The signs are good – if not the signings just yet

UPDATE: Elfsborg director Stefan Andreasson confirmed Celtic’s enquiry for Gustaf Lagerbielke.

He said: “We’ve had a dialogue in this case. There’s an interest, yes. But we’re not in negotiation. The club must move from interest to acting concretely. We’re not there right now.”

  11. I have seen a fair few comparisons on net spend in the transfer market based on this window in isolation. Mostly in MSM to be fair and we all know the agendas.

    Celtic vs rangers etc

These are a complete red herring. These do not allow for the fact Celtic acquired massively ahead of the curve two years ago and last year whilst securing little transfer income.

They also ignore the small matter of a significant increase in deals committing key players to longer term contracts.

Finally they also assume claimed spend is actually what is really spent.

It’s fascinating that some critics of Celtic see us somehow downsizing when we are potentially buying top young talent from Sweden Poland and Holland to replace 1 player who appeared in 1 CL match last season and was more often a scapegoat and noted as a bomb scare by many on here (despite his excellent record) ……

As for folk who only comment criticise and find fault but cannot even begin to offer any thought of what a solution might be by then claiming to not be experts…….. maybe that speaks volumes as to the value of that criticism in the first place.

If reported fee range for Carl Starfelt is accurate, I for one, will be disappointed.

Obviously he’ll waive some of his “contractuals” in order to sweeten the deal.

But, based on his pedigree, still a bargain for Spanish club.

Midytjalland (I can NEVER spell that club name) recently sold a player to Lazio for €16m.

    That’s our target level.

That’s our target level for selling Scandinavians

  14. News just in. FA to investigate player transactions at Chelsea over the period 2012-19, a period of sustained success down at Stamford Bridge. Thought to include key players and agents and involving seven figure payments. Not so much off grid, but offshore, and hidden from the relevant authorities. (Sounds familiar). Facing possible fines and point deductions. Been spending big lately so here’s hoping.

  19. The Hun luck in European competitions continues it seems, this from the BBC article on Beale, this part is about Servette:

Servette are furious that Cameroon midfielder Gael Ondoua, who holds Russian citizenship, was not issued with a visa in time to travel with the rest of the squad.

Striker Enzo Crivelli is suspended and influential winger Miroslav Stevanovic is injured, along with first-choice goalkeeper Jeremy Frick.

They got similar luck that year they reached the Europa Final. Let’s hope Servette hand them their arses in both legs. Mickey Mole will be toast!
