Baird’s Bar, Paul McStay and Anton. Brendan is home

654

If charm brought European success, Brendan Rodgers would have left Celtic Park with the Champions League trophy yesterday. After speaking to the media he sat down with a small number of fans and immediately bound himself to the group by quoting the vernacular of the Celtic Park of his youth.

He spoke about it all. Paul McStay was his favourite all time Celtic player, “when we were in trouble you always looked to Paul to do something”. There was a special place for Anton Rogan, “flying down the wing” but it was Tommy Burns who made the most durable impression on Brendan.

“He went to Mass every morning before training [at Reading]. Family and people were important to him. He told me all about managing Celtic”.

There was a glint in the eye when he recalled stops in Baird’s Bar on trips to Glasgow before heading to Celtic Park, and of recounting his trips for weeks afterwards. The thought crossed my mind that this was a guy who had just picked up keys to kingdom he dreamed of ruling.

There was a short sentence: “I was 39 when I went to Liverpool”. He didn’t need to elaborate. The Liverpool job came when Brendan was still young enough to be play. He’s sure he is a better manager now than then, although he was a pretty impressive manager to be able to land the Liverpool job when he was still a pup.

Several of you have noted that the pickup in season ticket sales will pay the reported multi-million pound salary Brendan will earn. That will pale into insignificance compared to the money his family spent in the Superstore yesterday. They are a very proud family.

He wants his teams to defend aggressively. The responsibility to develop players remains, but he noted that it takes the right experienced players to properly bring on young talent. Oh, and no one needed to tell him the importance of the last week in August.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the newspaper advert fundraiser, the money is now in and fundraising closed.  The Guardian and Tribune De Geneve have been paid, and the balance will go to Mary’s Meals.

You get the impression that the Scottish media do not want to sell The SPL to anyone if TFOD2 are not the story or the beneficiaries.

However I will use this point to push the growth agenda.

CTV yesterday showed what is possible if you have a spectacle to offer.

Needs to be taken to the next level with investment in proper facillities.

And proper personnel to add some structure to the home grown enthusiasm.

Not sure if you piggyback the CFC output onto a more general sports feed.

However their is an audience and there is a revenue stream to be harvested.

Just a case of up the quality and let the football talk for itself.

Everything is about the big Mo.

All things being equal then we are a stick on for the CL next season.

However if we spend our time thinking up excuses as to why this will not happen then we are sunk before a ball is kicked. Just look what happened this season — glass jaw, just waiting for the failure to happen. The only question was how.

As things stand we have money to spend.

Rumours of £15mill plus sales — I could live with that.

Just spend it wisely rather than this season’s failure forward.

The whole issue would make some QoS round — what links these individuals pictured on screen?

    Or

PL actually paid serious money for this selection of non scoring strikers?

With a fair wind the T/O should reach £80mill next season?

Enough for a football wage bill of £30mill plus aggressive bonus scheme?

Generate £10mill for physical investment in the ground and surrounding area — start up a development company to focus the work, the costs and the benefits?

Generate £10mill for player investment in 2017/18?

Need to take today’s optimism and channel it into tomorrow’s progress.

Stagnation nearly killed the club, the team and the enthusiasm.

    No more.

  13. I find it hard to see how Hibs could be in serious trouble. When flares, banners ,singing are deemed wrong at Celtic Park,it is the home clubs responsibility. The same applies to every other team, apart from one. This final was under the auspices of the SFA.All policing and security was down to them, not Hibs or the Huns.A pitch invasion at Celtic Park would end up in Celtic being found guilty,so the same should apply to the SFA.Hibs had no control over the events. The Hun fans will be found guilty as much as the Hibs fans for the fighting.Players being manhandled again falls under the SFAs failure, not Hibs.

What we are seeing is TSMSM stirring it up in favour of their favorite sons.Nothing more than bluster.

In 1972 the huns invaded during the match, when their team was on the ropes. Moscow had just scored to make it 3-2 and they were dead in the Catalan heat.

The respite allowed them to see the game out.

Brendan was indoctrinated round about the same time as me.

The Cetenary season was obviously a highlight due to the players he mentioned and he recalled well that the maestro could have played with another club. I wonder if it really was only Udinese that were interested.

I think it does matter that he is a Celtic supporter. He clearly gets the club and his family are reacting as yours would had you just got the Celtic job. The bones are there of a great appointment he needs to put the flesh on that now with good PR, great man management both up and down… And player purchases.

If we sort the squad numbers out and bring in 3 players ready for the first team we are off. That cannot be 3 players in late August it has to be now.

No more loans! I’d settle for centre half , centre mid, centre forward and a right back if needs be. One or two of those could be guys coming into their late 20 s early 30s. if Bitton moves on bring in a proper holding mid and shift Brown out to the right. Stick Roberts just of Griffiths and your other Centre forward to play as a 4 3 3.

Ron Vlarr would be type of Centre half that would interest me and he is out of contract. James Morrison also out of contract along with Michael Carrick.

  22. I honestley didn’t see this at all, something very strange about this one, can’t put my finger on it, he must have been getting wallies if he’s coming up here, or they’ve went right into there last pay day loan?

I think they offloaded three squad players, so a bit of room for wages. No doubt a few extra season tickets as he would be the type of – ahem – “character” that would appeal to that lot!

Maybe Burnley thought he might not last a full EPL season so only offered a pay per play deal or something? Dunno.

Certainly didn’t look like anyone else was interested so maybe that tells you something!

  27. Barton has to be on minimum 30 grand a week. His last big payday. With Burnley going into the EPL he would have at least been on that, probably more.He has no love for the Huns,so you could probably up that wage a good bit. They have got rid of 3 for no money, brought in 2 from Accrington,so there will be eff all left in their kitty. That defence will get humped in the SPL,and their imo, best player Miller will surely be struggling next year against full time pros.

Barton is a good footballer. If he had screwed his head he could maybe have been a great player.A 2 year contract,on the money they are probably giving him at 33,probaly too good to turn down.

There’s a whole load we don’t know about what last Saturday at Hampden, and ot remains inexplicable that there is no publicly accessible footage from the many TV cameras at the match to clarify what occured.

What is quite clear though is that the root cause was a catastrophic failure of security.

This was an SFA event, and this is their problem.

If it indeed transpires that stewards were redeployed away from Hampden prior to the end of the match, there will be some difficult quesitons to answer…
