Balance shifted to runners unconvincing with the ball

490

After so much slow build-up play this season, and so many misplaced passes, the sight of Roberts, Christie, Allan and Griffiths pinging the ball around the field was a revelation. I know the game was won before the three substitutes grabbed hold of things, and that there are vastly more challenging scenarios than Inverness at home, but the new blood have asked a big question of the incumbent three attacking midfielders.

The comfort on the ball the three substitutes brought was also contagious, Lustig looked less like a panicked fawn as he confidently back-heeled the ball into space.

The balance in the team has shifted damagingly in favour of players who can run, or perhaps jump, but who are unconvincing with the ball at their feet. So much so, Craig Gordon clears the ball up the field, instead of playing-in Bitton or a central defender, more than we’ve seen from a Celtic keeper in decades.

Christie, Roberts and Allan will not change this overnight (the latter’s misplaced pass against Ajax was costly), but they are doing enough to justify some faith in their selection. New Douglas Park should be an ideal opportunity to strut their stuff.

Told, mate. By someone close who knew my thoughts on Joe Ledley.

I also recall meeting his Dad a few times. First time in Cardiff,Dempseys, with West Wales Celt, the others in Glasgow.

Joe got Celtic. He had no intention of leaving. Being pushed is a different question.

    TBJ,

I’d like to see him quote the rags of the questioner, from the day of liquidation, especially if the hack in question actually wrote the piece :)

    Something along the lines of

“Your words no mine Mr blah, liquidation sees the end of the club and 140 years history …,”

Simply repeat their own article back to them and ask them if that was/is the legal standing of their legal depart ment of the time, and what’s changed ?

PL wouldn’t do that. As I understand it,it ranks as restraint of trade, and the player is entitled to leave for free.

  5. To be honest, I hadn’t heard these stories about Joe Ledley.

Though I’d be interested to know why.

    Robert88,

Think outside the box son, if you want something more positive, try and start a positive discussion, it’s no that hard.

Or you can continue to greet like a spoiled brat about what other people are talking about because they are not dancing to your tune.

  7. I rated Joe Ledley highly and I was gutted when he left. I didn’t begrudge him his move though. Even if he did want to leave, I would not have begrudged him his move.

Equally, I don’t begrudge Forrest his move, but then I’m not exactly gutted at the prospect of him leaving. I don’t think he’s contributed as much as he should have over the years. Injuries didn’t help. Neither did his level of application.

Personally I would’ve told JF and his advisors last summer to find another club and got a fee in for him. So to that end I would not have left him to rot.

In the current circumstances though, i would be surprised and frankly disappointed in RD if Forrest ever starts again for Celtic. So to that end I would leave him to rot.

He’s the one who thinks he can do better. I think he will be disappointed.

Ok. On the face of it that sounds poor. However, he didn’t have to go did he? At the very least he could have continued to the end of his contract. Or was he also threatened with exclusion from the team?

I’m sure he did get us, but I also wonder occasionally with players if they love the club enough to stay even when offered what they consider a low wage, that the vast majority of us will never see. (that’s not directed at JL specifically, just a general musing)

  15. when does Forrest’s contract actually end? I believe its Jan next year. Not sure why we did not match it to a season end. Guess we can still get a small fee for him in the summer when he will be free to sign a pre-contract. He is now facing potentially 9 months sitting on his….. Would not be surprised of he ended up at an Aberdeen

Dundee midfielder Gary Harkins has insisted he was only joking when he called Rangers “just a new club.”

Harkins and his teammates face Dumbarton at Dens Park tomorrow in a William Hill Scottish Cup replay, with the prize for the winners being a trip to Ibrox to take on the Light Blues in the quarter-finals.

Dipping his toe into extremely dangerous waters, the Dark Blues player claimed after his side’s 0-0 draw in the league at Kilmarnock on Saturday that it would be a novelty to be going to play the Glasgow giants.

Harkins said: “They’re just a new club.

“I’ve not played them before, so I’m looking forward to that.

    “It should be good.

“It will be a tough game against Dumbarton, they made it hard for us down there and it wasn’t the best of days, but there is a chance to go to Ibrox for a quarter-final so we will be right up for it.”

However, Harkins has subsequently claimed, in a message on his Twitter account, that he was just having a laugh.

He posted that it was: “Just a wee joke took too far.

On the same club issue it was pointed out on Twitter today that Duff and Phelps in their role as administrators wrote that in the application the CLUB put forward in March 2012 for a UEFA licence the CLUB was refused on because of insolvency, tax overdue and payments to other clubs overdue.

This is 2012 when the SFA could no longer help RFC over licensing hurdles that had become too high and too many since 2011.

The key point is that Art12 of FFP defines a licence applicant as either a club or a company operating a club.

The Duff and Phelps statement confirms what was long accepted until June 2012 that both the SFA and UEFA not to mention the world at large vowed RFC as a football club and nothing but a football club from the years of their existence.

If TRFC ever qualify for a UEFA licence again and meet the conditions for granting it will have to be TRIFC that applies to reflect the new claimed status as the company operating the club.

At some point UEFA will want assurances from the SFA that they actually understand UEFA FFP and what UEFA is being told by TRFC or TRIFC backed by the SFA is the truth.

    Once bitten etc.

“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”

The drive belt on Mrs S of T’s Rega Planar deck will need replacing soon .

    ————————————————————————————-

Bought my Rega Planar 2 around the end of the 80’s (I think!) and still going strong. Haven’t had to replace the belt yet but been through one or two needles. Relatively recently I had to purchase a phono stage as I’d bought a new amp. This had the advantage of having a digital out which can be connected to a PC for recording purposes. Only two things I have recorded using it :

    1. A Chet Atkins LP for a little old lady in Australia whose had lost her original recording which her husband (R.I.P.) had given her about 50 years ago.

  28. It’s always sad & frustrating when someone with very obvious talent fails to reach their potential. Unfortunately James falls into that category, I was and to some extent still am a big fan, however just like many before him the Club is bigger than any player, so its Bye Bye James best of luck with your new Club but you will never play for a better Club than Celtic. Seems he has a year left on contract,I presume that means Dec 1916 so hopefully we get a few bob for him next transfer window.

I’m not that surprised and as long as the charges against CW DG and CG remain there are still still questions to be answered in court relevant to Res12.

The worry is that what will come out will put more pressure on the PF to reconsider the other charges.

However the upside of that is what has stopped the English media reporting what they got from CF will have gone and it’s open day on the SFA and SPL.

  30. I am sure we should all be aware by now that we will get nothing from the media in this country. A long time ago I decided not to buy papers anymore and saved hundreds per year in doing so. But yesterday evening I was at my sister’s for a meal and as I waited I picked up a Sunday paper…not sure which. I was amazed to see that an article on young Allan was inferring that perhaps since he has been given so little game time, he will be regretting that he signed for us. The article did not go as far as mentioning the new team on the southside, but it does not take a great deal of intelligence to work out what idea the article was trying to plant in people’s minds. I guess it will never change.

Incidentally can any Greenockian tell us what team Gary Harkins supports. I was told year’s ago that it was not Celtic.
