Balde, Hooper, summer challenges

1119

13 June and Celtic have signed a striker!  Do we have some important games coming up early in the season?  6’4” Amido Balde joined Sporting Lisbon three years ago but never made an appearance for the club.

After three loan deals he joined Vitoria Guimaraes a year ago, where he caught the eye of Celtic scouts.  At 22-years-old, he is right in the sweet spot of Celtic’s recruitment strategy: fully developed physically, old enough to be considered prime first team material but with many years of prime football ahead.

Playing for Celtic is quite different than playing for Vitoria Guimaraes, so it may take Amido a period of adjustment to settle into life as a Glasgow sporting celebrity, but he is clearly the man Neil Lennon and the scouts wanted.  Based on that, I’m happy.

Despite what could be described as cover, and the fact that the player has declined a new contract, I’m still not happy to sell Gary Hooper.  We have lots to do this summer before that moves up the agenda.

Welcome to Celtic, Amido.

The raffle for a signed Celtic top in aid of 1254125 ends early tomorrow morning. THIS IS THE LAST CALL FOR TICKETS, which cost only £1 each. Get in there…..

There are very few Brits in my wee bit of the world but one of that few is a guy who is a retired social historian . He is fabulously English .

I recently had a conversation with him re a fairly new Miss Marple series being shown on Italian tele . Poor man was outraged by Miss Maple’s use of ” train station ” and opined with absolute certainty that Miss Marple would use a Railway station not a train station .

    Things you learn.

I expect he only needs to be part time, probably does a bit of profiling then returns to see who is achieving their targets and setting new targets, throw in a wee bit psychology and genes a boys name

I hope it is true. I hope he takes over the whole Sevco show and turns it into a decent club. Or that Sevco perishes.

Weeminger’s post earlier was very enlightening. If we see another big-volume trade substantially below the official price (still 54 pence) it might be a sign that Kieran Prior has gone back in. If what we continue to see is trades at or even a wee bit above 54 pence, I don’t think it will be him, unless he’s just selling the 50 pence ones straight back for 54 as I suggested earlier.

Sydney Tim – we unscored 92 goals in the league last year.

Next best was ICT with 64.

Our striker policy had been a disaster over the last few years.

How many forwards have we bought on our budget that have turned out to be goal scorers apart from hooper

Not good at arithmetic after a few wines. Maybe you could add up

Lets start with bangura and murphy. Money down the plughole. They weren’t goal scorers before we bought them

Disaster of a striker policy. Balde is the latest Hope he is not the norm

  8. Favourite Uncle – Cheers for that.

Some people will utilise that to their own advantage and publicise it. These peepil are really lower than a snakes belly IMO. We have to keep preaching the 10 Brave commandments and that redemption is just a thought away.

Great night down at Greenock last night Willie Wallace and BRH&T some double act! Well done to everyone that made it happen!

Good luck to all the golfers today!

  14. Professor Green 10:56

There are players with good goal scoring rates that are affordable in the right markets. Johnny Russell up until last season might not have been the most prolific but he banged in 1 in 2 last season and left Dundee Utd for £750k.

Then there’s the £1m more bracket where we’ve opted for 2 or 3 duds at £1-2m but baulked at £3m – surely a better policy would be quality over quantity… a certain Lewandowski comes to mind!

  15. Apparently a snake has interrupted play at the CQN Open at Aberdour golf club, suggestions that its an adder and there to help keep TTT score are as yet unsubstantiated.

I’m beginning to wonder whether this Blog is being targeted by a PR effort designed to deflect us from what is actually happening in Scottish Football.

Celtic, like every other Scottish Football club, is a business and if it doesn’t conduct that business professionally then it will end–up in the same position as Rangers and Hearts and others. That is the bottom line. Unlike most other clubs Celtic has added legal responsibilities to its shareholders because it is a publicly listed company.

At this moment in time the Celtic management, in difficult economic conditions, still appear to be doing a good job in keeping the club healthy in financial terms and as long as they do I will support them. And sometimes support is blind in the sense that important decisions taken by a Board can’t be up for open discussion. There are mechanisms at Celtic for raising these issues and these are the ones that should be pursued.

However, Celtic is not the moral guardian of Scottish Football. It has to operate within the flawed rules that govern the sport and the unfit for purpose hierarchy of suits.

I truly believe some posters are getting a bit carried away in thinking they can actually tell a major business how it should be running its affairs especially when it is a successful business. I like a couple of others posters have suggested positive directions we can move in as a blog to address the deep-rooted problems that face Scottish football but unfortunately it will take years of hard work to even start to make any real progress.

However, some think it can be done by instant revolution and that Celtic should be in the Vanguard of that movement. That’s up to them but I am fully aware of all the historical reasons as to why Celtic should show caution and be circumspect. Anyone who has been in any way involved with what has been exposed in the last few years must surely have have some awareness of the power of the Scottish Establishment and where its bias lies. I have been involved for a helluva lot longer and know the dangers that exist.

As to calls for Lawwell to resign well that is just infantile – he doesn’t decide Celtic Policy. It’s the Celtic Board that decides that and Lawwell carries out that policy. If he didn’t he wouldn’t be resigning he would be sacked.

If some Celtic supporters no longer wish to be associated with the club that is their decision but as an ordinary fan with no political axe to grind I will remain as a supporter of my club first and foremost but will also try to do what I can to improve the governance of Scottish Football as a whole whenever I see a way to do so. One thing I will not do is damage my club and reduce its ability to be a standard bearer both for Scottish Football and how a club should be run. Sometimes leading by example is the best way or proving a point.

Snakes are very common in Scotland, especially the poisonous ones,

Seen a young adder a few years ago, was very impressed with its attack display,

Couldn’t have been more than 6″ yet. Up like a cobra ready to take on any giant who wanted to come ahead.

That seems a very reasonable stance to me.

Perhaps a lot of us are guilty, at least from time to time, of wanting instant action and instant results, when logic and experience both tell us that chipping away slowly is what will win in the end.

On Ogilvie, though, there is a feeling that we are having our noses rubbed in the muck. Not just Celtic, but Celtic more than anyone.

I aint hitting hard on science but just the scientists that take a paycheck, Man is a Sinner. recognise that fact and we are laughing at these control measures being slipped around our ankles and wrists.

If you can’t stand up for what you believe in, for what your mouth boasts that your heart desires… then who, or what, are you?

Maybe it would’ve been better if these folks had just renounced their faiths; their values, their dreams, but then again, they chose not and they paid with all that they had… they paid in blood, their blood, rather than be silenced.
