Bankier, Livingston and most plural club in UK

485

I didn’t see Ian Bankier’s performance today, but I watched his predecessor John Reid a few times. John wasn’t liked by a significant body of the support, largely for professional reasons (his role in government), but when he got on his feet to address Celtic supporters, he had an intuitive feel for what to say. No one ever needed to script him.

Ian Livingston has received a lot of criticism since voting with the government in the recent Tax Credits bill. I’d heard the nature of some of what was written online included reference to his background – appalling, without question. Nor would it surprise you or me, we’ve been online long enough to see just about everything, including those who troll others on account of their background or identity. Often with Celtic-related targets.

We are a plural club, with people from Jewish, Protestant, Catholic, and for all I know, other backgrounds, on our board, all these and more in our dressing room, and among our support. I’m proud of this. We are often caricatured as an exclusively Irish-diaspora club but few in the UK can claim such an ethnic panorama.

A club of immigrants founded 127 years ago has continued to attract new immigrants ever since.  It’s worthwhile reminding ourselves of this, it should continue to be a part of our forward strategy.  What correlates with this is that anyone with a prejudice will find a target at Celtic – such is the diversity of our club. Celtic fans, players and officials have been targets like this for a very long time.

Was Ian Livingston right to vote with the government on Tax Credits? No. I haven’t considered the policy’s economic merits (first pass suggested it had none) but I believe his voice should have been raised against the policy. The expectations of being a representative of Celtic, not just a board member, are weighty.

Ian Bankier could have read all inappropriate online comment referring to Ian Livingston’s background immediately before today’s AGM, but that forum was not the place to mark anyone’s card. The intuitive feel John Reid had on these occasions was missing today. Go complain about such comment to the appropriate authorities, or to whatever online facilities hosted the comments, tell Ian Livingston ‘You’ll never walk alone’ in a private moment, but address shareholders and Celtic fans on matters appropriate to them.

So who can convince Mr Desmond and the rest that their vision is wrong and return Celtic to being a football club rather than a business however stagnant that business is, it’s a depressing vision you provided us with as these guys do not seem to be of a philathropic nature, so without a change of heart it will be more of the same until more and more do other things with their money and time, although the preference shares will still pay 6%,

I did subscribe to the initial offering when Fergus took over but not when he left as I’m sure he said he wanted to double his money, with the increase in liquidity when he was selling out he got about 40m.

You say we are the most puaralist club however there is a gender imbalance on the board , are there no Celtic minded women who could bring something to the club board?

  3. Excellent post BRTH, was there an alternative proposal at that time ? i dont remember any other viable schemes being proposed at that time, what i do know, we did have a bankrupt ethically and financially board which required removal to save Celtic

Today we will make a donation to a foodbank collection in the spirit of Brother Walfrid, below is Celtic’s FC endorsement of the collection, when making that donation some young lad volunteering his time will probably say thanks or Hail Hail for your donation, then you will make your way on to the game, no agendas spoken just charity, thanks to the young bhoys giving of their time to help with much needed donations to a foodbank as winter sets in, only a twisted perverse loony could see anything different

A FOODBANK collection organised by the Green Brigade will take place at Celtic Park this Saturday, November 21 ahead of Celtic’s game against Kilmarnock (KO: 3pm)

There are four collection points outside the stadium, near the four corners of the stadium, and fans are asked to support this collection.

The most-wanted items are: sugar, UHT milk, UHT juice, toilet roll, tinned fish, tinned fruit, tinned custard/rice, tinned meat, biscuits, baby food, nappies/wipes, toiletries, soap, toothpaste. Cash donations are also welcome.

Yes you are right on there, that was man many moons ago, in fact 36 years it was, many things have changed since then, as it does for others in any way or walk in life, trust me I know.

Of course food banks are political

If it want for the politics of enrich the rich at the expense of the poor there would be no need for food banks

Anarchy from the Celtic support in the shape of, telling the board that….the only way that next seasons season book money will be going into the club, will be in exchange for Desmonds shares therefore, control of the club.

You will then see the true colour of those who sit at the top of the club.

Folk will be sidetracked into thinking that we need to replace billionaires with, bilionaires….we dont.

How much do these billionaires put into Celtic?

How much, directly or, in a round about way have they taken out of Celtic?

Smash the PLC and restructure the club.

If what you do for charity is your business why didn’t you just shut the feck up and let those who want to donate get on with it?

We are more pluralist than the Huns – that’s about the length and breadth of it. Real pluralist clubs like Aberdeen , Inverness, Ross County probably have a majority of their fan base who don’t even differentiate between religions, ethnic backgrounds, etc. my two boys have been educated in Aberden far away from the denominational / non denominational atmospher that I was brought up in ( I attended both Catholic and ‘ non denominational schools)… I’m proud to say either of my boys has ever mentioned the religious beliefs of their peers, they are 100% oblivious to racial differences and take everyone they meet as they find them.

To even describe our club as the most pluralist belies the fact that differences are engrained on our collective consciousness in a way that they simply aren’t in many provincial clubs who are genuinely open to all.

  12. My thoughts on *ankier can wait till 5 to 5

    till then its Celtic time,

    Hail Hail fella.

Yeah, I think that a right doze of scunnering-mibbery when we play against the huns is….sadly….what it will take to shake the apathetic-pshychological-armlock that Celtic fans have been gripped by over the last 4 years.

DD / Fergus saying that….they need the huns back….should have wakened up the Celtic support but….looks like it will take more than that.

Well done with yer two kids.

I think what matters now is the legacy Dermott Desmond leaves behind.

I think he is the guy that needs persuading that a different business model that addresses some of your points, in which all stakeholders feel they have a voice , is the way ahead.

I remember reading an interview DD did with the Celtic Support at the CSA I think, but it seemed to me he does not have a particularly high opion of the support, certainly not those who want such a say.

There is a forum opened up on the future of Celtic in governance terms where the debate may get a wider more consistent airing but if we are to achieve a different model, I think we have to start changing DD’s mind about who he would be passing his legacy to.

  18. Lawwell and the board are a self preservation society. We win the league as we have no opposition, right that’s a bonus. I see very little being done to get the apathetic amongst us back.

I decided last year I wouldn’t be back at CP till Lawwell was away. I now want serious board room changes. From the welfare cuts vote, the way the fans are treated, the complacency the board disgust me.

For those travelling to the game today by car along Dalmarnock Road, there are roadworks and temporary traffic lights at the junction with Springfield Road.

    Good Post.

Likewise, I will refrain from giving my money to nasty wee businessmen and Tories, who pretend they are Celtic fans.

The only way to get rid of these imposters, is to withhold the money, that gives them so much power.

Formerly…I would spend whatever I had to go to Celtic Park, no matter what.

I now see, that only direct action will remove these snakes.

So, I will today tank my dough in the bookies, rather than support the cretins who are ruining Celtic.

I spoke to my late father about buying shares in Celtic when Fergus arrived. He spoke very similarly to yourself. Warned me that Fergus was taking us down a dangerous path. He said as a lifelong trade unionist that shares were not for him. Put me off becoming a Celtic shareholder. My dad’s warning was made apparent to me yesterday.

You may no longer be active politically (me neither) but it doesn’t mean that politics is un-important. More power to political activists. I only wish there were more like them to counter the lies and propaganda fed to the general public on behalf of likes of Livingstone, Desmond, Bankier and the rest of the exploitative capitalist elite who want to grasp more of more of the planet’s riches and to hell with everyone else.
