Bankier, Livingston and most plural club in UK

485

I didn’t see Ian Bankier’s performance today, but I watched his predecessor John Reid a few times. John wasn’t liked by a significant body of the support, largely for professional reasons (his role in government), but when he got on his feet to address Celtic supporters, he had an intuitive feel for what to say. No one ever needed to script him.

Ian Livingston has received a lot of criticism since voting with the government in the recent Tax Credits bill. I’d heard the nature of some of what was written online included reference to his background – appalling, without question. Nor would it surprise you or me, we’ve been online long enough to see just about everything, including those who troll others on account of their background or identity. Often with Celtic-related targets.

We are a plural club, with people from Jewish, Protestant, Catholic, and for all I know, other backgrounds, on our board, all these and more in our dressing room, and among our support. I’m proud of this. We are often caricatured as an exclusively Irish-diaspora club but few in the UK can claim such an ethnic panorama.

A club of immigrants founded 127 years ago has continued to attract new immigrants ever since.  It’s worthwhile reminding ourselves of this, it should continue to be a part of our forward strategy.  What correlates with this is that anyone with a prejudice will find a target at Celtic – such is the diversity of our club. Celtic fans, players and officials have been targets like this for a very long time.

Was Ian Livingston right to vote with the government on Tax Credits? No. I haven’t considered the policy’s economic merits (first pass suggested it had none) but I believe his voice should have been raised against the policy. The expectations of being a representative of Celtic, not just a board member, are weighty.

Ian Bankier could have read all inappropriate online comment referring to Ian Livingston’s background immediately before today’s AGM, but that forum was not the place to mark anyone’s card. The intuitive feel John Reid had on these occasions was missing today. Go complain about such comment to the appropriate authorities, or to whatever online facilities hosted the comments, tell Ian Livingston ‘You’ll never walk alone’ in a private moment, but address shareholders and Celtic fans on matters appropriate to them.

  1. Another thing

As someone with zero interest in politics, and that includes the politics of our Board

I am fed up with the so called Celtic Chairman, denigrating the Celtic support

    Time for him to go

    BRTH

Brilliant post, I have a major problem with Fergus, in that for his investment, a reported £7m he walked away with £49m 5 years later (700% profit) with a statement if he raised £50m he would give our youth set up £1m.

He may have transformed Celtic, but why the need to make that type of money ?

TonyD, enjoy the boardroom visit with your brother – how does he manage this on his annual visit ? How do you ( not you personally) go about getting an invite, is it because of his friendship with PL ?

Meanwhile you continue to discredit young Celtic fans who will collect food for the poor – really sad

Been reading back so just catching up.

As our next Chairman I would like to nominate BMCUW.

Just think – we could have an annual hootenanny in the Kerrydale, with lunch n dinner in the Walfrid and the No 7!

All at the club’s expense of course.

Oh, and PFAYR for company Secretary!

    4-0 the Hoops today.

  5. 50 shades of green on

Got fed up being force fed adverts on here and was only popping in now and then.

Then I decided to try Firefox for Android with their ad – block and apart from the first time I tried it I haven’t had a problem with adds and can now browse add free on my phone.

However after reading some of the mince in the last day or so I’m starting to miss those adverts.

Anyway as I am sure some of you know Celtic are playing today. You might be confused because its at 3 pm and its on a Saturday.

And a thank you for reminding me about the food bank collection, trip to morrisons before I head off to Celtic park.

Mon the hoops. 4 nil today please.

My recollection is that the gentlemen you mention

were behind the Mc Cann takeover, well at the outset

at least, now I could be wrong have been before.

    Hope your well pal.

  8. 4 hours to kick off, 3 to announcement of team. Anybody out there wanting to talk about football, pick their preferred team etc.

Personally I’d like to see Scott Allan get a start. Apparently Carlton & Kris have both been ill and Joe has been given a few days off, my team,

Gordon, Lustig, Tierney, Jozo, Bhoyata, Brown, Biton, Allan,Armstrong, Forrest, Griffiths.

  9. For the first time in a very long time I find myself in agreement with Paul’s post. I think that probably says a lot for the disasterous, idefensible performance of the board at yesterday’s agm.

The thing that is particularly galling though is that this wasn’t a simple mistake or an error in judgement by them. Their disdain for the support is absolutely clear now. It is on display time after timer after time. We have a bunch of grasping greedy directors who don’t care about the club. They only care about themselves. They profess charity while taking the credit for Celtic supporters generosity whilst castigating that support at every given opportunity.

The divide between that board and our support has never been wider. Never.

They are aloof, complacent, lazy and corrupt. Yes corrupt. They are up to their necks in the Huns cheating and doing absolutely nothing about it.

Bankier should resign this morning. Anyone who calls their customers criminal racists should go, never mind it the chairman of that company. But we all know this board coulndt give a toss about the support and actually believes we are racists and scum. They will attempt to sit tight.

But man they did a lot of damage yesterday.

As always, a very well written and entertaining essay.

However – in reality, was there really any viable alternative to the Fergus McCann model at the time?

And more to the point – what can ever change the current model unless DD develops a new found streak of philanthropy?

Only had the privilege of being in Big Rab’s company once and that was at a CSA night thanks to yourself. He was a fountain of all things Celtic and great company, despite the horrible and evil disease eating away at him, he still fought strong.

We will be bankrupt after the first hootenanny, but it will be worth it and we can always retain our history if we can remember it.

Incidentally, the most practical suggestion for change I have seen is SFTB’s suggestion that small shareholders get together and call EGM’s with regard to specific issues.

A few of those and I think that our custodians might get a wee bit tired of the aggravation and start to see the error of their ways.

  17. Cultsbhoy, how does Aberdeen’s pluralism explain their fans’ song about Saville and Catholicism? In its real context it is sectarian, but is never called out for what it is. Many of the regional clubs have such an undercurrent, which cannot be defined as pluralist.

No I’m afraid you said the exact opposite, you said there would probably be a petition there, and that when I answered you and said I wouldent be participating in the food drive if that was the case, otherwise I would have.

  19. More harmful to Celtic is the immoral decision not to pay the living wage, and as for Livingstone or any other Tory for that matter shouldn’t be allowed anywhere making decisions or having any input into our club he belongs to the establishment who have no regard for nothing, never mind the poor of the East end of Glasgow or anywhere worldwide!!!

No I stated quite categorically that as far as I was aware there were no petitions today.

I was going to participate if there where no petitions involved, you said, there probably would be that’s why I said I would bother then, that was the whole crux of it, others where here, hopefully some one will put you right on it, because why wouldent I participate then? Do you get it?

  22. No Tony either you didn’t see it or you’re deliberately making things up.

    Enjoy the boardroom.

  23. BRHT

As eloquent and erudite as ever however it misses the point that others have pointed out that without Fergus the club would have died. Once he was in control he had the say in how things went from there. The notion that we could have created a Barcelona or Athletic Bilbao club membership schem that would have raised the required amount of money is fanciful in the extreme!

Again as others have pointed out your reinterpretation of history ignore the fact that we were in a full blown economic war with the Forces of Darkness who were promising to outspend us by a factor of 100%!

One of Fregus’ best moves was to leave the Bank of Scotland as soon as he could!

The support are now faced with the dilemma of what comes next. For over a century we were very much the underdog. The cheating and corruption in the footballing authorities did not start with Minty taking over at the bigotdome. However against all those odds we still managed to become very successful on the park. What we have now is that some of the big things that united the support – the outside pressure like the deid Huns – have been removed. Now we have far more time to contemplate our navels because we are no longer involved in a weekly struggle for supremacy!

Make no mistake the vast bulk of the support does not engage in web site chat – we have to face the fact that we are don’t speak for every CFC fan. In my work at least one guy gave up his ST when the Huns went burst.

The vast bulk of the support despite what BRHT says don’t have the required skill sets to run a modern day football club and business that we need to have.

Without being offensive it sounds almost as if you slightly look down on those who did buy shares.

Without all those little people we would be out of existence now.

As ever you are perfectly entitled to your opinion and long may you advocate your stance because that’s what P67 was talking about – diversity!

Should we ever lose that capability then that’s when we would be in real trouble!
