Bankier, Livingston and most plural club in UK

485

I didn’t see Ian Bankier’s performance today, but I watched his predecessor John Reid a few times. John wasn’t liked by a significant body of the support, largely for professional reasons (his role in government), but when he got on his feet to address Celtic supporters, he had an intuitive feel for what to say. No one ever needed to script him.

Ian Livingston has received a lot of criticism since voting with the government in the recent Tax Credits bill. I’d heard the nature of some of what was written online included reference to his background – appalling, without question. Nor would it surprise you or me, we’ve been online long enough to see just about everything, including those who troll others on account of their background or identity. Often with Celtic-related targets.

We are a plural club, with people from Jewish, Protestant, Catholic, and for all I know, other backgrounds, on our board, all these and more in our dressing room, and among our support. I’m proud of this. We are often caricatured as an exclusively Irish-diaspora club but few in the UK can claim such an ethnic panorama.

A club of immigrants founded 127 years ago has continued to attract new immigrants ever since.  It’s worthwhile reminding ourselves of this, it should continue to be a part of our forward strategy.  What correlates with this is that anyone with a prejudice will find a target at Celtic – such is the diversity of our club. Celtic fans, players and officials have been targets like this for a very long time.

Was Ian Livingston right to vote with the government on Tax Credits? No. I haven’t considered the policy’s economic merits (first pass suggested it had none) but I believe his voice should have been raised against the policy. The expectations of being a representative of Celtic, not just a board member, are weighty.

Ian Bankier could have read all inappropriate online comment referring to Ian Livingston’s background immediately before today’s AGM, but that forum was not the place to mark anyone’s card. The intuitive feel John Reid had on these occasions was missing today. Go complain about such comment to the appropriate authorities, or to whatever online facilities hosted the comments, tell Ian Livingston ‘You’ll never walk alone’ in a private moment, but address shareholders and Celtic fans on matters appropriate to them.

  1. Game day!

Hope Stuart Armstrong gets a start, steadily returning to form and I like the way he has his head up all the time and links the play.

Players should be itching to go after the internationals. Early goal and it could get pretty festive, Kilmarnock’s confidence is wafer thin.

GB banner upside down again after a few years rightways up I reckon.

As dismayed at the state of CFC this morning as I was yesterday

A third rate team with a disgrace for a board ….the only time Bankier is heard he’s condescending and miscalling the fans …

  7. Good morning friends. After a night where East Kilbride saw it’s first snowfall of the season I awaken to a cold, crisp clear skied matchday and the hope that we’ll be ‘walking in a Griffiths wonderland…’

  8. Have to say, I’d rather a Tory on the board than a Nat.

Why do you, apparently, continue to support said organisation

That’s an easy one to answer….because it’s in my DNA: because it’s my club and not theirs: because Celtic will still be there when they are not:, because I supported Celtic all through the Kelly and White years and hated them as well.

I reiterate……leaving all the other issues aside it was Bankier’s attitude which disgusted me.

We may all be shareholders in this great club, but let’s face it, they don’t really want our opinions. As in any PLC. They are/ represent the Majority shareholder and we are an annoyance.

….just like you are similarly miscalling the team and board …..and just to put the record straight …there shouldn’t be the need for a debate on tax credits, since, in this day and age, there shouldn’t be any need for tax credits (living wage etc) …..it’s a disgraceful indictment on Disgusting political failure over many years …..BUT…….it is not a subject for our AGM or CQN ….. It’s a subject for public protests and demonstrations etc WITHIN THE POLITICAL ‘ARENA’

  14. Celtic haven’t played in two weeks and yet I woke up this morning feeling like we had just been beaten. No…hammered!

What that bankier said is not only so insulting to everyone who signed the petition against livingston but to every Celtic supporter who tries to make a difference.

If livingstone received abuse of a racist nature then let’s see it. Expose the guilty, pass it to the police and concentrate on the real issues. Smoke and mirrors.

I have to say, like others, that I’m very disappointed that our host would rely on what he ‘heard’. Let’s deal with facts not hearsay.

And, suddenly, john reid is a hero! FFS!

I feel no connection with those who run Celtic. Not just because of their politics but because they appear to possess not one shred of human decency.

    They are not ‘us’.

Yesterday was a massive own goal by bankier and no amount of retraction will change that. He is, at best, an idiot.

Why would a Celtic chairman hand the hateful smsm a glorious opportunity like that…now?

    Reminds me of Bernard Shaw,

“Put an Irishman on a spit and you can always find another one to turn him.”

    Thanks bankier. Clown!

Meanwhile food bank collection at Celtic Park today.

How does that tally with livingston and bankier?

  15. Apart from Fergus, the board have always had a parasitical right wing feel to them. All through my life.

Loved the story about the guy with a noose in the main stand, shouting “this is for you” at Robert Kelly.

  16. saltires en sevilla on

    Good morning fellow Celts.

With all the stuff on suitability of various types to enjoy board status at Celtic, I had a notion that we had a vote on that?

    Anyway.

What I find really worrying is reading posters saying they will walk away from the club if the board don’t do something about the EBT, SFA, Mibbery, Selling our best players, allowing the MSM to continuaaly spout shampoo about our fans, our club etc., etc.

    walking away?

    Since when?

Celtic fans have the absolute powerof veto on each and every Celtic board and that includes the billionare shareholders.

They are in it for the money, and the power buzz, nothing more and nothing less.

Deprive them of that for a wee while and watch them do the walking/ running away.

Oh but wait, who replaces them?

That is where it really starts to get tricky…

  17. So the living wage basically cost our club an extra 60/70k a year

A club that they blabber on about how little debt we have, how well run we are oh and how we are more than a club.

    A family ..

Someone said surely the good publicity alone would be worth paying 60k for … And if our club has such good business heads on board surely they would see this.

So maybe it is a political decision ? Maybe our board don’t agree with living wage law anywhere never mind where they work.

Would poor lord livi be frowned upon at his next Tory meeting if he was seen to be bending towards becoming a living wage employer ??

No matter what it’s wrong .. And it’s in our name. Not the individual board members but our name. Celtic

Thanks for the continued work of the Res 12 supporters aswel as HT and the Celtic trust . Keep the faith

I think it’s more a case of them feeling that they’re in charge and they’re not going to be dictated to by a bunch of no marks and malcontents some of whom might even be from peripheral housing estates.

They are after all, each and every one of them, highly successful and accomplished gentlemen.

And, to be fair to them, it takes a special type of person the make Celtic fans just a little bit ashamed and embarrassed by the Club, but, hats off to them, they’ve managed it.

  23. I give regularly to the food bank it’s a great cause, but the hidden agenda ran one today will unfortunately get nothing from me, it’s high jacked as it comes with signing a petition, to me? Well that’s not charity, it’s the Celtic Trust/ Green Brigade political movement, I do charities and Celtic, NOT POLITICS.

Saw your response last night, I had retired for the night having said my piece. The WWF ad is a must see, that boy Will Young is a terrific singer.

As for Danny Dyer, he was in good form last night, I always thought his Mockney Geezer act was a bit put on and he used to be a figure of scorn to me. An ex colleague of mine is a proper Isle of Dogs Millwall man and told me that the man Dyer was a proper geezer and is not a Mockney at all.

Still not a big fan but he was entertaining last night, helped along by a very good comedy foil.

  26. Danny Dyer……………..I’ve met the bold boy a couple of times and was pleasantly surprised.

Funny bloke – came across as genuine and given his profession, had

  27. Not seen it mentioned much on here but today’s Foodbank collection has been organised by the Green Brigade.

    Please give what you can.

    A support like no other.

  28. Foodbank collections are not politically motivated.

It is now around 5/6 weeks before benefit claims are processed. That includes Working Tax-Credits. Some families are left without any income at all during this period. In the lead up to Christmas it would be nice to think no-one was going hungry. That’s why Foodbank stocks need to be replenished as much as possible.

    There’s politics for ye.

  29. Today me and the wee yin are off to Asda to shop for the foodbank with the money we’ve saved dodging the clippie on the train all season getting to the game.

    Hashtag fatherhood.

  30. I’ve never understood the whole “Politics and Celtic” thing – to me the Club is synonymous with politics and the best proponent of our values and beliefs…………..one of our defining beliefs being our tolerance and welcome to anyone who genuinely supports the Club.

My politics are brought right up to the front door and sit well with me at Celtic Park, always will.

Without our politics, we might as well be Hibs.
