Banks and bums

796

I hear there are rumours in the old media today that David Longmuir prepared a plan with Charles Green and Peter Lawwell before briefing Scottish Football League clubs this week.  I suppose the rumours are half right.  No one from Celtic was involved in this nonsense.

Special mention to Gavin Masterton, owner of 94% of Dunfermline shares, who last month told the BBC “The football club is debt-free. There is no bank debt. The debt is to myself and the other directors.”

This new kind of “debt-free”, talked about by Dunfermline and one other lower league club is more dangerous than it seems as just three weeks later Dunfermline admit they expect HMRC to apply for a winding up order.

Fans have raised around £250k, enough to pay HMRC in full, but they are asking Masterton to value his shares at a level they would reach if an administrator was appointed, which will happen if the fans don’t pay.  Masterton’s recovery plan was to issue £500k of shares for around 25% of the club.  Nice, for him.

Nine years ago Masterton and Dunfermline director John Yorkston were embroiled in the financial calamity which afflicted Livingston.  This tale of woe is worth reading, as is the story about the downfall of Bank of Scotland by Iain Fraser, who writes, “The rot set at Bank of Scotland in when the likes of Gavin Masterton and Peter Cummings started handing millions of pounds to their pals, without doing much in the way of due diligence.

Fraser also speculates “Foolishly, Cummings and his predecessor Gavin Masterton handed [Sir David] Murray a total of £760m on a “no questions asked, handshake only” basis and, in the current environment … realised he hasn’t much chance of paying this back”, in an interesting article on the Bank and the liquidated football club.

Mr Masterton is clearly the only qualified candidate as the next president of the Scottish Football Association.  After Mr Peat (former director of liquidated club Airdrieoneans) and incumbent Mr Ogilvie (former director of liquidated club Rangers) the bar has been set at an astonishing level.

“Utterly astonishing”, as our old friend used to say.

Be wary of people to say they are debt free when what they mean is they have no bank debt. Be very wary of bums who try to convince you that them being denied bank lending is a good thing.

If company credit rating equals zero, credibility rating equals (I’m away to find out if a whole number is required here).

THE EXILED TIM – A house could be thrown up overnight, we both know it.

Mrs P and I watch a lot of Channel 4’s middle class property porn show “Grand Designs”, so I feel qualified to point out that you can’t simply “throw up” a house overnight, it takes years and years measured in Kevin McCloud’s greying hair. (thumbsup)

You’ll have noticed that in the follow up bit almost invariably the happy couple are either expecting or have recently had a visit from the stork.

Now I’m not the suspicious sort, as you know, but is this merely coincidence or has Kevin a string to his bow that we’re not being told about?

  7. So much for the Utd boycott being a one off. Angry, stupid zombies…

Rangers supporters chiefs have threatened to boycott away fixtures next season if the Ibrox outfit’s Scottish Football League counterparts vote for a new 12-12-18 set-up.

The country’s 32 lower-league clubs are currently mulling over plans to reorganise Scottish football under one league body.

Among the proposals are blueprints for a 12-team top division and similarly-sized Championship second tier that would merge into three groups of eight after 22 games in order to decide the major issues – the title, European qualification and relegation out of the top flight.

But the sticking point for some of the nation’s smallest clubs is whether to proceed with an 18-team third division or persist with the current Second and Third Divisions comprising 10 teams each.

The first option, however, means runaway Irn-Bru Third Division leaders Rangers would remain trapped in the basement of Scottish football for another year and that has sparked outrage among their fans.

Now Rangers Supporters Assembly chief Andy Kerr claims the Glasgow giants’ fanbase will look to take revenge if the 18-team bottom tier is voted in.

He told the Scottish Sun: “The only thing that is pushing this is short-sighted finance. The top 12 clubs are happy because nothing is changing.

“The teams below them are happy because they are getting a bigger share, while those 17 clubs left along with Rangers are happy. They are rubbing their hands at the thought of the gate money.

“While we want to support our team, serious questions would have to be asked. I think there’s a huge risk Rangers fans will simply say, ‘enough is enough’. We are trying to work our way back while others are attempting to hold us back and drag us down. I don’t believe our fans would stand for it, and nor should they.

“It’s been an adventure this year. But the thought of having to go through all that again, having won the league and not been promoted, would have a very negative affect among our supporters.”

So they phone Longmuir and ask him who at Celtic said the club were in favour.

    How long would that take?

I’ve never got my head round their problem with this, in terms of their return to the top flight. Whether it’s an 18 team 3rd tier, or 10 team 3rd and 4th tiers they’ll still be two promotions away from the top level.

Seriously – if Longmuir ends up at Ibrox and Wiggy puts himself forward as SFL supremo, what kind of message is that sending out with regards reconstruction ?

Surely the objective should be to sort out our administrative bodies with the clear message that there is no place for hun puppets – either past, present or future.

The majority of the SPL clubs have already told Longmuir where to stick his proposal. There is no need for any statement from Celtic on the latest Sevco kite-flying operation.

It is entirely unlikely that the Colts idea would have been put forward without Celtic’s involvement at some level.

The issue is one of timing.

The idea was formally floated last year and promptly bounced by the SFL clubs collectively. Celtic doubtless would have given consent to being included in the proposal at that time, otherwise why stop at Celtic? Why not include Man Utd or Barca colts if you don’t need their consent to be mentioned?

Longmuir has resurrected the idea in the past week. Did he go back to Celtic for further confirmation, or simply rely on the previous discussions to be able to include the following line in his email: “both clubs have intimated their desire to be considered as part of this strategy”.

I reckon Longmuir has pulled a Sir Humphrey this week. He doesn’t say “when” the “desire to be considered” was “intimated” or the strength of it.

Saying that, Celtic would I’m sure remain interested, particularly if other larger regionalisation projects were progressing positively, but between the U20 League and the Next Gen series, it’s difficult to define quite who this colt team would comprise given the existing framework for youth development.

I think that there are 3 possible reasons…

    1. they need to be seen to be making “progress” otherwise lose hun interest and support.

    2. suggestion that they might have issues around season ticket prices if they don’t get “promoted”.

    3. their hunnish mentality means that they can’t be seen to be dancing to somebody else’s tune – they are ra peepil when all is said and done.

“Trust me” reassurances on CQN or elsewhere are counterproductive.

In an atmosphere of mistrust everything must be above board.

    —————————

Trust is not an assurance, it is a request to believe that in spite of what appears at the time both parties want the same thing.

To trust is a risk taking decision because if it is done the trusting person can look a fool. It is anything but a reassurance.
