BARKAS DEBUT DELAY

VASILIS BARKAS is still waiting to hear if he will make his Celtic debut in this afternoon’s Premiership opener with Hamilton Accies at Parkhead.

The Greek keeper agreed a £4.5million switch from AEK Athens during the week and is hoping to get the nod to make his first appearance for the champions.

Neil Lennon scrutinised the new Bhoy in training at Lennoxtown, but has yet to decide if he will pitch in the 26-year-old international stopper against Brian Rice’s visitors.

The Hoops gaffer also admitted the club are in no rush to add another netminder after losing out on Fraser Forster, who decided to remain at Southampton with two years still to run on his £90,000-per-week contract, and Craig Gordon rejoined Hearts at the end of his deal.

Lennon, speaking to the Sunday Mail, said: “We’ll take a view on that as we go along and speak to Stevie Woods, our goalkeeper coach.

“We’re delighted to get Barkas done and we’ve also got Scott Bain on a long-term contract.

“We’ve got Conor Hazard who has done really well in pre-season. So, the position isn’t a major priority for us at the moment.

“If Barkas isn’t ready, we’ll go with Bain, who has also had a good pre-season campaign.”

Recent reports from across the border indicate former England international No.1 Joe Hart, who quit Burnley at the end of his contract in June, is still on the Hoops’ radar.
