Battle of the Lennons

917

It’s the battle of the Lennons at Celtic Park tomorrow with Danny enjoying the best run of form in his managerial career.  St Mirren are on 20 points, joint with St Johnstone, who they beat in Perth last month, and have already taken a point from Ibrox this season.  They are a technically sound team who will be more difficult to create chances against than Dunfermline were on Wednesday.  They can also play a bit.

Team formation will be enormously important for Neil Lennon.  This is the type of fixture he would previously select a 4-4-2, with two wingers, giving width to the game, but leaving a central two outnumbered by opponents who inevitably pack the middle of the field.  If Celtic persist with this strategy they’ll need to tighten up in the middle.

There is an interesting subplot to this weekend’s games.  Earlier this month there was a daunting 12 points between Celtic and Rangers.  A win for Celtic tomorrow would see that gap shrink to 4 points, with Rangers playing their game in hand away to Kilmarnock at lunchtime on Sunday.  As well as playing for three points tomorrow, Celtic have the opportunity to put pressure on Rangers.

    If you can forgive the fact this is from the-English-Sun,it may be of interest. Especially to a vulture capitalist who may see some difficulty in his cunning plans.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    CLUBS will become extinct or be thrown out of the league if football loses a vital legal battle which starts on Monday.
    The taxman is taking the Football League to the High Court to challenge the football creditors’ rule.
    At present, clubs which go bust have to pay players, managers and other clubs in full to come out of administration and stay in the league.
    Other creditors like the taxman end up with a small percentage.
    But if the Football League lose in the High Court, bankrupt clubs will be more likely to disappear.
    Plymouth, whose recent administration triggered the case, only survived because players and staff went unpaid for months.
    Argyle administrator Brendan Guilfoyle said: “If players do not have the security of knowing they will be paid, they will not be so willing to defer their wages. I fear clubs would go out of existence.”
    And if the High Court declares the rule illegal, chiefs would be forced to bring in tougher penalties than points deductions. That could mean expulsion from the league.
    Bring it on,I say.
  3. Looking at News Now, I see that the Scotsman and STV have reports on the U-19s heavy defeat to Barca. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t recall these news sources reporting on our two wins against ManCity.
    Actually you’re spot on. It was Kenny Shiels I was thinking of – he was the first to speak up and it was an indicator of the disgraceful situation here that no one else said a word. Am always mixing up Kilmarnock and St Mirren for some reason (and hence their managers). Paul67 referring to both clubs above didn’t help me. So in that case, no less than 7-0 will do ra morra :) Will be easier to get 7 against St Mirren now that Mixu’s gone off to manage Greenland.
    Butcher calls integrity of SFA.
    What happens when Celtic call integrity into question????
    ***
    According to the Metro today Butcher had a wee chat with the SFA compliance officer and everything is now fine. Nothing to see here, move on. We all know Lenny would have been treated exactly the same way if he had promised to have a fleet of ambulances waiting to meet the referees when they came to visit.
  17. I see the possibility of Blackman at right back and Matthews at left back on Saturday. My team (but I don`t expect Lennie to agree!!):
    Forster
    Blackman,Rogne, Mulgrew,Matthews
    Wanyama
    Forrest Kayal Ledley Commons
    Stokes
    What I expect:
    Forster
    Blackman Wanyama Majstorovic Matthews
    Forrest Kayal Ki Ledley
    Hooper Stokes.
    I do hope Commons is selected. He really is a class player.
  18. Didn’t see the game on Wednesday night but seeing the the 2-0 scoreline flashing up on Sky after fifteen minutes I was confident that the floodgates would open instead Celtic did a wobbly and just made it to the finish line.
    Thought the Napoli – Man City game was one of the best I’ve seen this season. Full of incident and great attacking football by both sides. Tremendous atmosphere in the stadium and I doubt there are better supporters – Celtic fans excluded of course – than the Neopolitans.
    Napoli played with great pace and power, Cavani in particular.
    Jeff Stelling of Sky wondered if he would make it to the “best Lge in the world” EPL. The usual English arrogance.
    Barca and Milan another great match. Barca just keep getting better every season – they can win it again no doubt.
  19. Tomorow.s game is going to be anything like a walk in the park. St Mirren gifted us two goals at their ground and then outplayed us for 80 miniutes
    They have guys comforable in receiving and making a pass, something we do not do with consistency.
    If we do, we will win, if not we will struggle. This is how our football should be,teams taking points off each other not one club seemingly unbeatable. Once the cloak of invulnerabilty, bought with other people’s money is repossessed, we can start ti enjoy the whole contest AS a contest. Until then the enjoyment is spoiled by knowing that they stil enjoy the footballing fruits of what the talent that they cannot afford to pay for.
    Got a feeling Blackman is a left back, can’t see him starting in such an important game, I reckon it will be Joe of El K at left back..
    C’mon the Hoops..
    PS Sone Aluko the new James Beattie!!!
  22. Auldheid,
    Brick67 wasn’t playing in that game though. But out of respect for St Mirren, and in light of your observations, will settle for 5-0. Another issue may be the concern of some of our 1st team players that they might be arrested for wearing Celtic tops.
    Blackman is a left back. Play El Kaddouri at left back and keep Matthews at right back and put Joe Ledley into the centre of midfield where he should be.
  25. Googybhoy
    The could have done Butcher but do not want to play that game.
    Having set a new tolerance level it will be inteteresting to see if Lenny is dealt under different standards in future. They have created a precedent that protects Lenny
  26. Starry and Kayal.
    Yes, he is a LB. I was thinking of Mikael L (the Norwegian guy). In which case, I would not be surprised to see Andre starting on Saturday with Ledley in front of him and Commons, unfortunately IMO, on the Bench.
    It is quite possible that your selection may prove accurate but I’ve lost count of the times we have played with two in mid-field only to be out-numbered and over-run.
    Almost every defeat last season was down to that formation. It’s an accident waiting to happen.
