Bayer Leverkusen will sleep easy

189

Tucked in nicely behind Bayern Munich in second place in the Bundesliga, above Dortmund and comfortably ahead of Leipzig, Bayer Leverkusen are in the kind of form that they have not known in 20 years.  It is safe to say their trip to Glasgow this week will not cause them sleepless nights.

On returning to Germany, they have a trip to winless, 16th placed, Arminia, on Sunday.  Leverkusen will doubtlessly have a sense of security about this week’s fixtures; one that few would suggest is false.

Celtic could see tomorrow’s Europa League encounter far enough.  Having shipped five Premiership points in a week, domestic form is the only priority, an exhausting encounter against a top German side before Sunday’s trip to Aberdeen can only multiply Ange Postecoglou’s problems.

If anything, I could make a case for Celtic resting players ahead of Pittodrie, but that’s not how European football works.  We will attempt to reestablish the form we showed early in Seville two weeks ago; that two goal lead seems a long time ago.

  1. Please spare a thought for another good Celtic man taken too soon by Covid19.

(Wee) Charlie Sermani reffed at the Pitz/Powerleague in Townhead for decades.

He was a lovely, mild mannered, true gent of a man. (putting up with generations of bams)

    Charlie, I’ll miss our chats.

    —————-

his photograph, taken around 1945, shows Corporation housing at Langley Avenue, Knightswood.

Knightswood was one of the areas affected by the Corporation’s policy that no public houses should be built in council housing schemes. The temperance movement contended that alcoholic drink caused or aggravated poor social conditions, and that licensed premises would be incompatible with the provision of “healthy surroundings and happy homes”. Relatively low figures for arrests for being drunk and incapable in “dry” areas seemed to justify the policy. However, it was also argued that the absence of public houses forced people living in outlying estates such as Knightswood to travel long distances for social activities, often resulting in disturbance for travellers on late-night transport. The policy was finally relaxed in the 1980s.

Lots of good stuff to ponder in your post.

Short answer – yes. Buy and consolidate shares.

Extending the medieval metaphor for a second.

If your “opponent” is more powerful / holds the high ground / has home advantage then … yes, you take the fight to them (initially) on their terms with all the disadvantages that entails.

    OR

You can burn the landscape for miles around their keep in all directions.

You may very well starve them out and ultimately prevail …

… but you’ll take down a lot of others with them.

You have to admire your efforts to move the narrative away from a hopeless board damaging a football team right in front of our eyes.

Just what drives this level of effort?

Do you have skin in the game regarding our board / execs / management?

What is in it for you?

  7. MM,

you dont read the room well do you.

Some of us are having nice little reflections on where Garry Duncan grew up, and stories shared, and question was asked to find some pics of Knightswood from the archives, so as a politeness I searched them out. bor

To somehow suggest I am posting anything as a “deflection from the board” is just stupid.

    But hey ho, your consistent.

  8. Long shot but…

I’ve got the chance to be in Seville on the 7th of November, when Betis v Seville is on.

Anyone on here got any links to the Betis support for me to try and get a ticket?

I’m at work and will try and keep my eye on here but feel free to email me – Gerryhart@gmail.com

I often look out for the highlights of Liam Henderson in Serie A. Would love to see him brought home to play in the hoops once again. He could do a job for us and would be returning a much better player for his time in Italy.

It would also be great to see Euan Henderson getting a chance in one of Ange’s #8 role’s soon. Enough of this Turnbull/Rogic combo already.

The Ladybird Book of Economics not arrived then?

Scary that it would seem that an engineer at Bearsden Tech got taught more about economics than an apprentice bean counter at the Tech — though from memory the Friday night dancin’ at the Tech was the better night out so you have an excuse.

  16. I received a Text this morning from my Health Centre/Nurse advising em to phone and make an appointment to visit the nurse and receive a ” PNEUMOCCCEL VACCINE”.

It also stated in the text ” NOT Flu Jab”…which I had already assumed it to be ?

I phoned and spoke to the Receptionist, and asked her ” What is this Pneumoccel Vaccine” …is it The BOOSTER to the Covid Jags ? and ?

I was told it was NOT.

I dont remember ever having this ” Pnuemoccel Vaccine ” before, does anyone have any idea why I need to have one now ?

I DO intend getting this further Jab, and I have an appointment next week.

  17. BHOY FROM THE BOYNE on 30TH SEPTEMBER 2021 1:23 PM

Our club 10 months ago whilst we were in the debacle of a season supposedly going for 10IAR announced to the fanbase a review of the football dept, the outcome of that review as with other matters football at Celtic are classified in the same category as national security and are locked away never to be revealed, or those in the know get wee snippets of propaganda to keep some opTIMistic

I fear this season whilst hopefully it will not dissolve as last seasons continues to be affected with ongoing structural and personnel issues in the football dept, we need personnel who are leaders in their respective fields to take charge of the football dept away from persons undefined at the club, and it needs to happen sooner rather than later, then maybe a route and planning for the Hendersons and their ilk can keep them at Celtic

    Madmitch @ 1:33pm,

I saw those rumours too on another fan board last night.

Same sources indeed that were post DmcKay was away 2 days before it was announced. I thought that was folly when I read it….

Hopefully not with Ange – I believe in Ange as a coach. He did say on yesterdays presser he is looking to build successful team not only for this season but for the years ahead. So hopefully this rumour is folly.

That said, I thought his bite at the media yesterday was a bit strange (even if justifiable). He is feeling the heat of recent results, no doubt.

  19. BACK TO BASICS – GLASS HALF FULL on 29TH SEPTEMBER 2021 11:08 PM

Going on about the board is only tedious if you think it’s not relevant or not useful which seems to be what you think. A pity. But at least you went on to give a suggestion that may or may not be feasible, i.e. the EGMs so thanks for that. The kind of assumptions you allowed about the board are not the one’s I would have identified and I think they are more than assumptions:

Who is responsible for succession planning? For ensuring the short-, medium- and long-term development of the club? That’s certainly not the fans and when a manager or a CEO tries to do something along those lines we lose them. Why did Rodgers leave in the manner he left? Do you think he was satisfied with the board when he left? He knew the board would never meet his expectations, despite what they originally said to him. Why did Dom leave? Same story. Why do we always leave business so late that we are effectively handicapped when the new season begins or even before in terms of European qualifying rounds? Who is responsible for that? I accept not all of those questions can be answered definitively but some have an obvious answer and the answer is whoever is running the club and that is the board and DD. Or do you have a different answer?

This year we foolishly gambled on Eddie Howe and got burned, whose responsibility is that?

We didn’t have a scouting system in place, was that not the fault of the board?.

There are short-term and long-term issues. Our short-term issues is having new players who haven’t yet settled or are not yet match fit – all last minute additions Starfelt, Juranovic, McCarthy, Carter-Vickers etc and of course all the injuries. But they only reached a perfect storm because of the remiss or simply terrible management of the board and DD. Our long-term issues are success in Europe of a degree that we can at least hold our head up high and say we competed. That requires succession planning and excellent management of our club. We are very far from that. So far that we need a revolution. Dom wanted to benchmark our performance as a club against top teams of similar size and to some extent resources who achieved success but his plan required changes at board level. We know how that ended. But hey! We’re going to have evolutionary changes. Evolutionary processes work slowly I believe and are very interdependent. Maybe real changes will have to wait until Celtic joins the EPL.

    LionRoar67 @ 1:42pm,

No argument for me here. The entire football operations dept is not fit for purpose IMO. The recruitment, lack of DOF and majority shareholder involved daily. Problems also go right down to the youth system.

Likes of Morrison, Hepburn too have left over the years. If you read a lot of the interviews with these young boys, they talk about being smitten by the Bayern’s of this world who sit them down and present them with their vision for their career path to first team football. Some have said they did not get the same at Celtic and therefore it was a ‘no brainer’ to leave.

  21. I think it was Drambowie Celt who enquired about taking over Garry’s Superbru Predictor account in his memory. I have enquired of Superbru and it seems this is not possible without knowledge of his log in detaiks which I do not have.

The only suggestion I could amke was to join the comp as a new participant and we would just add (in our own calculations which would not appear on screen) the current points earned by Garry so far.

Let me know what you think
