Bayern elite up next

301

Bayern Munich sit six points clear at the top of the Bundesliga having lost only one game from 19 this season (at Mainz).  As a guide, they sit 22 points head of Borussia Dortmund.

They are in the Champions League playoffs because of a bizarre result in Rotterdam.  They had 80% possession against Feyenoord and missed all of their 30 shots on goal.  Feyenoord scored with each of their three attempts.

The German side are smarting after they failed to win 12 domestic titles in a row last term.  They are one of the strongest clubs in world football and will inevitably progress beyond Celtic.

None of that matters.  Celtic still have lots to gain and learn from this tie.  There will hopefully be challenges later this year in the Champions League against teams of this calibre, let’s arrive at them with a honed plan.  We play Bayern free from the stress of expectation.  Let’s enjoy the occasion.

I never see you offer an opinion on our supporters and their behaviour, Paul. Why is that?

AT- in my opinion Tangbhoy, every Celtic fan has a different point of view, its not Pauls job to cast or steer what differing views Celtic fans think say or do,that is down to us as fans to control and regulate misbehaviour among our own.

Our differences in opinion are our energy, look to the other side of Glasgow if you wish to see what one line of thinking is/does

TANG-I’ve lived in England for a long time and we’ve become toxic as a club and support. I’m in my fifties but we used to be asked to travel down for testimonials and friendlies, but now our name is not held in good esteem at all.

AT-i lived in London/Sussex for 6years Tang,i disagree we have become toxic, football has imo to a degree in England, awfully middle class looking down fans of other clubs and their media painting us as the IRA coming to town, with all that evokes in Birmingham.thats were a lot of the toxicity was generated in loo rolls like the sun and Daily Mail

We simply do not have the calender time now to play those friendlies and with the monies swishing around the Epl would it be morally correct to do so with players on wages that are stratospheric

TANG-And can you blame them? Everywhere we go we seek a face off and to make our statements. How insecure.

AT- Who can blame Celtic fans for wanting to attend a Celtic match Tangbhoy? Your testimonial narrative fails,my cousins stay in Digbeth in Brum, pubs overloaded, craic mighty among the locals,no problems,no insecurity whatsoever,Celtic fans doing what Celtic fans do best after following their team, having a drink and a singsong with self policing

TANG-Our support has been Catholic since it’s inception. Despite changing demographics and societal change it remains a huge part of the identity of most supporters (not all I appreciate) but we’ve not used it to be anti protestant – in the main. We also don’t sing many pro Catholic songs.

AT it could be interpreted our club is Catholic tho since our earliest days we have always been a club open to all in who we employ.Early Hibs were a strictly catholic,we always chose on ability.i have no problems with Hail glorious St Patrick and some others

TANG-But we do sing political songs all the time.

AT- i would dissent your view there Tangbhoy, they are a small part of a song library, look to the recent Dundee Utd home game(after BRs comment on singing the KT song) the whole repertoire was given a shout, there is a wide range of songs sung

TANG-We’ve had to endure over a century of anti Catholic hatred and this is rarely commented on which is as unacceptable as it is selective. But, we can only influence what we do.

AT – We are still enduring anti irish, anti catholic hatred towards us and our club,we still have Orange Order walks getting diverted from our chapels on the mornings of marches with the whole civic machine still poised to let them march regardless of those wanting to profess the faith, business’s making losses as no one wants to come to town.We still actively protest against these marches at all levels, small steps Tangbhoy

TANG-We know many within the support are pro irish republican, some are pro Palestinian and some are simply left wing. Or all three.

AT- That is true, long may it continue.

TANG-Chanting about a dead Monarch on front of her grandson is vile. It lacks any decency at all. If you disagree with the UK monarchy fine (I would remove all constitutional involvement) but why do we need to be so intolerant and aggressive in our views.

AT- ‘vile’-Catch yourself on Tang, our club was founded by the 1st generation grown out of diaspora who came over here after the know genocide that was AnGortaMor culled millions of irishmen and woman as tons of food left Cobh,Cork and kingstown to feed the forces of the crown(that was evil&vile),yup the same crown William is in line to,not that we have a choice

Its not aggression or intolerance, just memory

and its done in a humerous way

TANGOur away support are full of cocaine and alcohol induced fans although I know many who touch neither. They are however expected to endure a lawless support who behave with no consideration for their fellow fans never mind others.

    TANG(AND QUESTION below)

Stereotyping our support is usually done by our media.no need above eh! Drugs are rife in society as a whole, rife in pubs, rife in clubs, anywhere groups of folk congregate drugs are there

It does not help painting this as only our problem,i know many home and away who try get in about it,its an ongoing battle

Do tell “QUESTION”what are the PLC going to do to stop a kid taking a line of coke? Its a wider societal battle

TANG-We always believe we were better than rangers, the antithesis of them but many of our fansnhave become what they hated. They’ve no class and no self control.

AT-We are better than them,in everything we do.

I can see some similarities but our young still have a giving, charitable ethos, contrasted with ‘geordies

Cut’ ie one of them at the dip/swindle.

I have faith in our young Celtic fans,we were all there once,my generation had jock stein get in about them, the elderly drinking their wine then peeing in bottle then throwing it,with no knowledge or g.a.f whose head it bounced off.

That was once a norm it changed,so i would plea to have patience, keep saying your piece to fans you see misbehaving,

We have in general a lot of work to do,with Celtic and their part in societies modern social norms, and a lot to look forward to,our ultra groups are fans like you or i,no more power than you or i,lets shine a light on the idiot who got his ticket of a corporate ticket holder and deal with it

There is a lot to be getting on with,as has always been the case since the good Brother Walfrid set the good ship Celtica afloat.

It’s about one thing only – themselves.

  7. “Kelvinbhoy on 31st January 2025 12:14 pm

Hopefully a sanction, other than the usual Club fine, whilst terrible for the well behaved fans, will focus the minds of the clowns that think flares and pyros are OK to be brought to and used at a football match despite being told not to for as long as I remember.”

I think it is important to remember just how small is the number of those who throw flares. Should thousands be punished for the actions of that very small number?

IMO, nothing will `focus the minds of the clowns` .

I don`t know the answer; perhaps there isn`t one but I do believe it is very wrong to punish the many for the actions of a few ( or of ONE in this latest case).

If UEFA see imposing fines as the solution, surely they should see by now that it doesn`t work. Have they issues a set of guidelines which Celtic haven`t adhered to? If not, punishing the Club ( and thousands of blameless fans) is grossly unfair.

Disappointed blocked a goal bound shot after rounding Butland, the ball came back to the guy 8 yards out and he chipped it over the bar at 2 Nil, in the last 10 minutes they USG had very good chances I remember a shot from inside the box that just cleared the bar, it was not an easy win for them they hung on.

*in the early 60s we were known as the raining champions of Scotland as a result of the amount of missiles that would rain down from the terracing, one game comes to mind, and I have spoken about it before on here, its the SC Semi at hades where after gubbin the buddies at love street on the Monday night 5-0 we were perceived as winners before a ball was kicked but unfortunately that afternoon we were 3 down within the first half hour, now I have also said I wasn’t there that day but according to family and friends it was an abhorrent section of our support, and NOT just a minority that reacted badly.

With about 20 minutes to go despite having the bulk of the play, think the 1-4 harry wraggs LC Final where we made enough chances in the second half to pull the goals back, before the highly intoxicated members of our support started fighting with each other, at both ends, and the bottles started flying, of course those at the bottom of the terracing sought refuge on the track, this was NOT an attempt to stop the game as the smsm suggested but just a form of escape by the wee bhoys and oul mhen who tended to congregate at that particular end of the terraces, no matter what Sir Bob conceded the game as the rioting was still ensuing.

Fast forward a couple of years and even during this new found success we still had this minority, so I an effort to try and stifle it an article was printed in the View requesting the support to police the “bad apples” in ours, they did and it worked and I actually witnessed this twice, against the huns tae, both times while we were winning as well.

Just watching candidate for Canada PM, Marc Carney (also former Chief of the Bank Of England) react to the the Trade War launched by Donald Trump, tomorrow, 25% tariffs on a peaceful, friendly neighbour of longstanding. Just behind Carney are two flags, the Maple Leaf and another, which looks like an inverse St Andrews Saltire, ( a la Russia & Greece) white background with dark blue cross. It also had a Lion rampant in the centre of the flag. Could that be the flag of one of the Provinces?
