Be straight with the people of Leicester, Brendan

212

None of us are particularly focussed on Tynecastle tonight, so you can imagine how players who have worked for and with Brendan Rodgers for over two years are feeling right now.  They have all the excuses in the world for a reversal, but they have to find it in themselves to put all off-field distractions aside and beat Hearts.

Brendan, Chris Davies and Kolo Toure have left the building.  Neil Lennon has been away less than five years but he worked with few who are likely to feature tonight.  The most important element of consistency we have is Scott Brown.  He has seen it all in his 12 years at Celtic and worked hand in glove with Neil during the latter’s four years as manager.

Yesterday I gave Brendan credit for his honesty, but something rankled in his later comments at Leicester, “I’ll give my life to make the supporters proud of their club.”  No, you won’t, Brendan.  It’s just a gig.  If Tottenham come calling you’ll be off.  We all know this, so be straight with the people of Leicester.

  1. Just read this :

” During today’s media conference, Celtic assistant manager John Kennedy revealed midfielder Callum McGregor has a calf injury and is likely to miss the next couple of games.”

    Damn.

    Hi DAVID17 – what’s that about

    ——

At an evening with Brendan Rodgers in 2017 in Glasgow, Brendan told a story about his first day. He said Danny McGrain asked him if he still had a job and Brendan said as long as I’m here, yes. Danny has said conversation never happened.

  3. People still giving a feck about the EPL’s David Brent?

Bring on the Hearts, the Hibs, the Sevco…..

  4. mike in toronto on

personally, I have decided that it is neither DD, PL or BR that is to blame ….. it is that bloody opta stat company ….

every player and coach now knows instantly … I completed 87% of the 96 passes I made during the game …. it has fetishized possession …

it should be like boxing …. on TV they keep track of both the number of punches, as well as what they call ‘power punches’ (effective punches) …

some guys run up hundreds of punhces, but actually throw very few scoring/power punches….

we need more passes with purpose …

  5. I don’t think the contribution of Chris Davies to Brendan Rodgers’s success should be discounted.

The last time we beat Rangers , big Chicos run and diving header from a corner was a peach ,

also Hoopers sublime control and pass through to Commons and him dummying the defender and finish is up there with the best ….oh , also Hoopers finish in that game was a stoatur , now i think about it , one of he best days in Paradise .

  8. THE LONG WAIT IS OVER

Which is why i believe Lenny was brought in.

He knows the score in the best wee country.

Football will be fairly irrelevant for the rest of the season.

  9. the long wait is over on

    On the BR/ Danny story.

Hadn’t heard anything about that before.

If true – and I’d take Danny McGrain’s word for it over Br’s every day of the week and twice on a

Sunday – it really is bizarre and , for me, reveals more about BR’s true personality and trustworthiness than anything else I’ve read,

    Odd – just plain odd.

  10. Call of Juarez

was thinking the same thing. Chris Davies was the sport science/stats guy. I think Strachan brought in a sport science guy years ago from France. The obvious product was McGeady gaining pace and strength to get away from his man(think he got POTY that year), plus the late goals we got from team fitness. McGeady obviously didn’t stay on the programme as he got skinnier and slower before he left

Tight at the back, solid in the middle…. let the front 4 do the damage.

  13. the long wait is over on

    Fan a tic.

May well be – as long as Lenny doesn’t lose the plot at

the inevitable shocking decision or three and get a 10 match ban.

Genuine question – does your discipline record as a manager carry forward from one job to another or is it a clean start?

  14. MIT

If it was for purposeless possession stats we would have been world champs.

Agents are obviously influencing their clients as modern midfielders who make forward passes are in short supply.

Ki once was the highest percentage passer in the EPL while being as useful as a chocolate fireguard.

    #WhereHaveAllTheMurdoch’sGoneCSC

  15. Part of me thinks go with Lustig ahead of Toljan.

Toljan hasn’t convinced me defensively, and Hearts are quite a direct team. Play lot’s of diagonal’s to the big forward Impiezu.

Lustig is now well rested. Think he has experience and know-how of playing at Tynecastle.

In midfield beside Brown, we will likely see Bitton. Just hope the speed of the game at Tynecastle doesn’t catch him out.

  16. RUGGYMAN

I thought the Brown and Bitton partnership was a big reason for our vulnerability under Ronnie.

Both have a tendency to overpersue and get caught wrongside

Our centre half ‘s were often exposed.

  17. Achtung! ⚡ Achtung! ⚡

    Beware The MIB!

Also my only criticism of Lenny is that, unlike the egotistical maniac – he can leave it too late to make changes if things aren’t going to plan.

Apart from that we should be just fine.

DAVID17 – thanks for replying re: the story about Danny McGrain. jings – if that’s true, and would always believe Danny – what a total prick. Strange how the veil suddenly lifts.

I remember a couple of years ago, only a few months after the previous manager started Wee BGFC won a day at Lennoxtown (well, Mrs BGFC paid for it in a charity auction). Met Craig Gordon (lovely fella), big Kolo (again, big, gentle, soft-spoken gent), Efe and others.

When going about the place we bumped in to Danny on the stairs – asked him how he was getting on with the new manager – said he didn’t really know him. Never though about it much. Then highlight of the day – Wee BGFC interviewed Tommy Boyd for Celtic TV (I have a video somewhere will post later). Boyd said he never really knew BR either – only has spoken to him once. Lennoxtown’s not that big a place, and I appreciate the first team is the manager’s focus – but looking back it is starnge that so much was made of being Mr Celtic, yet there was so little contact with living legends within the building.

I enjoyed 2 bucket list items last May while in Scotland…a wonderful tour of Paradise followed two days later by the Kilmarnock match from row 3 in the old stand (nothing to play for that night so definitely not a great match). I say this because I’m looking at the scarf I bought at the Celtic Way entrance and it’s a great memory of the night.

  23. I think BR intentionally shafted PL. Short term reaction with long term impact – he has lost the affection of the Celtic fans forever and will regret the historic treble treble chance! anyone else feel their GF just dumped them without explanation?

  24. Comments from Neil Lennon about the turnover of players in the summer

“And Lennon, whose side are eight points clear at the top of the league and bidding for an eighth straight title, added: “Once you leave Celtic, it’s not the same.

“I know from my own experience, once you leave the club there’s a bit of a hole, something in your spirit that’s just not quite the same. It’s magical what this club provides for players.

“If they are thinking about leaving, I’d make them think twice.”
