Beat Hapoel Beer-Sheva for Champions League football

822

Celtic will face Israelis Hapoel Beer-Sheva in the Champions League playoff round later this month, with the first leg due to take place at Celtic Park.

Hapoel, carrying a Uefa coefficient of 4, eliminated Olympiakos, coefficient: 70, in the last round – a bigger shock than Dundalk’s win over BATE.  They put on two backs-to-the-wall performances, drawing the first leg in Greece 0-0 before winning the return 1-0.  In the earlier round they shot the Sheriff Tiraspol from Moldova, winning 3-2 in Israel before securing another 0-0 away.

The positives: the Israeli league hasn’t started yet, so Hapoel will be no further into their season’s preparations than Celtic.  It also looks like the play on grass.

In recent seasons Celtic have found new and innovative ways to bow out at this stage but we know what’s required and will be strong favourites to progress.

Bring it on.

It appears BR doesn’t fancy Henderson for Celtic but if he is moved on we must insist on a buy back arrangement such as that Barcelona operate with almost anyone under 25 who leaves.

Really thought he could make an impact, maybe another loan to see how he progresses,

    __________

That would make sense for everybody involved. I’d like to see him go to an SPL team rather than back to Hibs. Easier to mark his progress against the same teams the first team plays.

  2. As for Liam Henderson, IMO it must be a close call between Armstrong and Henderson at the moment, Hendersons delivery at set pieces would be a big advantage as we are presently struggling with quality, i would give Liam the start on Sunday ahead of Stuart

Hearing he has been made available for loan, I agree but quite sure Hibs will be looking to get him back in asap,

Never heard of this team but Im certain they have heard of Celtic.

That means nothing.. They may be a team on the up meeting a Celtic that may not exactly be a team on the way down but is far from a golden generation…

We need to be as strong as we can be. While delighted we have reached this stage we have not impressed greatly in the process.

The correct investment now gives us a £15-20m return. Failure to proceed leaves us with the probability of waving goodbye to Grifgiths or more likely Tierney as they are the only players we have who will fill the financial hole and assure Bonuses are paid.

Finger out time .. BR has my trust – lets see how he plays it.

if you want expose hypocrisy then maybe you need to rethink your technique. Your style of writing seems blinkered and prejudiced. The lack of balance makes it difficult for you to be taken seriously IMHO.

PS – did we no get put out the CL at qualifier in 2002, the Seville year. I take it, by your measure, that was an unsuccessful year. I loved that unsuccessful year I’ve got to say.

I only see Liam Henderson on Tv but he looks great to my eye.

He has also taken a superb approach to developing his career. Not content to sit on a bench gathering dust he has gone out on loan to develop his game.

I’d rather we sold the lad than loan him as I feel he deserves his chance.

He’d be a starter in my Celtic ahead of several players favoured under Deila Lawwell regime.

On an unrelated matter please leave politics out of CQN… I’m certain there are political blogs that you can bore likeminded wannabe political analysts on..

The situation in 1968 was completely different and does not stand in comparison.

  12. I do not see why Celtic need to sell any player they want to keep this season, new sponsorship deals , strip launches, season tickets when I checked there have only 4 available then its sold out, Champions cup footbal which I read here will give us 9m Euro, the CL qualifier we have just played and another to come we are well in excess of £60 m of turnover before taking into account CL or EL money, how will the CEO proceed with caution or will he go for quality over quantity in the players being signed ?

There may be a few ‘unknowns’ about our match up with Hapoel Beer Sheeva, but on the upside for the crucial away tie in Israel, there will be certain ‘knowns’ after our home leg:

o the result from the first leg and what is required from the away leg to qualify

o first hand low down of their players, their strengths and weaknesses

o their likely tactical line up

Also winning through on Tue Aug 23rd would give us a full 8 days to add to the squad before close of transfer window.

  16. I like Henderson but it seems that successive managers didn’t and don’t.

Good luck to the bhoy if he goes but as others have said his attitude to go anywhere to develop is a good one, he is strong boy, full of running with a great delivery from set pieces and can chip in with the odd goal or two.

    Also gets Celtic

  17. If Brendan doesn’t fancy Henderson (a shame in my opinion) I’d like to see Christie get a chance against Hearts.

However we cant afford to go breaking UEFA rules again at Celtic Park against the Israeli’s. Whether we like it or not, them’s the rules from UEFA, I would rather we participated in their competitions than get flung oot because some numpty cannot put the club before themselves.

Happened too often in the recent past.

  25. In RD’s two seasons I think we signed 23 players. We paid for about 11 of them, examples of reported fees…

Armstrong, GMS and Cifti accounted for £3.5m

    Jozo around £2 to 3m

    Scepovic £2.3m ?

    Boyatta £1.5m

    Ryan Christie £500k

    Allan £275k Gone on loan.

Of the 23 players signed I think only Erik, Roberts (loan), Armstrong maybe Christie might play in the CL Qualiifier.

So it isn’t that we don’t sign players.

We spent roughly (not counting loan fees) about £13m(?)

In RD’s time however we transferred out players about 38 players. Some came back like O’Connell and Henderson.

    We brought in about £25m.

BR will hopefully be able to spend money in real terms.

Hopefully the first couple will be at the weekend.

Thanks for response. I am sure that there are people out there more intelligent and politically savvy than I to organise, if that is their wish, a protest against the Netanyahu Government treatment of Palestinians without breaching UEFA rules and punishments being imposed onthe club we profess to love : perhaps a rally in George Square an hour before KO, (police permission required ??), a demo across from CP, a collection for Palestinian orphanages at the turnstiles. I believe that something could be organised without breaching UEFA rules if that is what people want.

However, the great danger is that it would only take one spectactor (perhaps not a genuine Celtic supporter but an agent provacateur) to wave a flag and the Dallas Cowboys will be over us like a rash and how would that help the suffering Palestinians ? HH

    Dessybhoy,

A first team player told a friend of mine that a big squad isn’t conducive in creating a good team spirit/bond.

A trim is essential imo. A good few out and a couple of quality replacements required in this window imo.

I do think the squad size Brendan hopes for is a little small to be competing on 4 fronts though mindya.

  29. Regarding ’68 – I remember it! This was not a solo stance by Celtic but a response by UEFA to the revulsion felt in Wester Europe to the invasion of Czekoslovakia by Russia. The whole first round draw was remade keeping East and West apart. Made sense at the time but hardly a template for Celtic walking away from games in dodgy regimes – who presented big Billy with the Big Cup for example!

22 players in the first team squad supplemented by the best of our under 20’s and use the league cup to rotate and give the fringe players experience, that is the way i would go, however i know fans want to win everything they enter and that might not be possible.
