BEATON IN CHARGE

JOHN BEATON will be in charge of Celtic’s crucial Premiership encounter at Falkirk tomorrow night.

The referee will be supported by Ross Macleod and Alistair Mather on the touchlines with Grant Irvine at VAR controls.

Beaton, a figure well known to Hoops fans, has already been the match official in three of the Parkhead club’s games this season, with the team winning two and losing the other.

He was involved in the late controversial penalty-kick decision against Kilmarnock at Rugby Park on September 14. With the confrontation stalemated at 1-1, the ref pointed to the spot following a VAR interruption after a suspected handball.

SPOT ON…Kelechi Iheanacho fires in Celtic late winner with a well-taken penalty-kick against Kilmarnock at Rugby Park in September.

Beaton reviewed the flashpoint situation on the touchline monitor before making the game-changing decision with Kelechi Iheanacho thumping the award into the net for his first goal for Celtic and also the points-clincher.

The previous month, the whistler had taken charge of the visitors’ 2-0 victory over Aberdeen at Pittodrie where Benjamin Nygren claimed his first Hoops strike and Reo Hatate added a spectacular second.

Wilfried Nancy lost his fourth successive game in Beaton’s next match as the faltering title holders blew an interval lead to crash 2-1 to Dundee United at Tannadice last month.
