Beaton threshold on kicking, stamping and the rest

1148

We deservedly lost at Ibrox on Saturday, so it would have been inappropriate to apportion any responsibility towards referee John Beaton, for the free reign Newco player Alfredo Morelos had to kick Scott Brown, stamp on Anthony Ralston and assault the genitals of Ryan Christie during the game.

These things occasionally happen in football (although seldom in such quantities) and are picked up by the SFA review process.  What is exceptional about these circumstances is that the review process is unable to act as the referee claims to have witnessed each incident and determined no action was worthy of a caution or more.

Beaton will have mitigated his decisions with some or other explanation, perhaps with “It wasn’t that bad a stamp” type comment.  This is how the process works.  The system is rightly designed to protect referees and allow them latitude to make decisions, including the occasional mistake.

It is not always easy to view common assault for what it is, in fact, it is easy to get carried away with an occasion and raise your threshold for such matters.  It is only human to be affected this way.  But this is bad refereeing.

Beaton could have taken the easy route out and claimed he missed one or more of the incidents, each was off the ball, after all.  That would have allowed the review panel to dispassionately decide if such attacks are to be prohibited, or encouraged, in our game.  Instead, he affirmed that in his view, there was nothing in Morelos behaviour worthy of a caution.

I have no idea what Dedryck Boyata said to earn his red card from John Beaton against St Johnstone earlier this season but I defended the referee’s decision that day.  You have to trust match officials to competently carry out their duties.  Do I still trust John Beaton’s views on kicking players, stamping, genital punching and the like?  No.  His views and significantly out of line with mine.

I don’t see a conspiracy in what happened this week, just a referee who was not up to the job.  A good referee would have cautioned Morelos for the first incident (kick on Brown).  This may have prevented the more serious attacks on Ralston and Christie, but the Newco player was not even spoken to after any of the incidents.

These are not easy games to officiate but this was not a game full of controversy or incident, only one player and one referee lost the plot.

  1. Poor ref or conspiracy, either way it’s wrong, our custodians silence is deafening.

That’s the bit that grates at me.

Oh and by the way Paul67, the game would have changed drastically had sevco been reduced to 10 men for Moreloss kick at Brown been correctly called as a Red card.

    Hmmm.

Paul – let’s assume for a second that your premise of no conspiracy is correct.

If so, this problem still goes way beyond “a referee who was not up to the job”.

The man witnessed three acts of violence and did not think they warranted sanction !

This is simply unacceptable and would not happen anywhere else in European football.

Symptomatic of refereeing in this country.

The culture is “staunch” and the participants are typically guys who didn’t make it as players beyond amateur or junior football.

Cheap euphemisms like robust, meaty, competitive, manly, hard-but-fair are designed to hide the truth that violence deployed to suppress skill and talent will not only be tolerated but encouraged.

    Ridiculous.

    A supine and spineless article.

It’s beyond question that you are the conduit by which the board’s narrative is communicated to the masses and it’s extremely disheartening to read yesterday’s article preparing us for another disappointing window (a new centre half is all we need!) and today’s telling us that “I don’t see a conspiracy in what happened this week, just a referee who was not up to the job”.

We have numerous video compilations now evidencing Beaton’s complete unwillingness to penalise Sevco players for all number of fouls; pictures of Beaton attending a pub following the game- a pub from which one of the “loyal” supports’ clubs bases itself; and now his match report from which it has been disclosed that he saw the incidents (fouls/assaults) but deemed them unworthy of cards or comments to the perpetrators.

And yet, he just wasn’t up to the job?

With friends like you Paul, who needs enemies. Just as the mainstream media dispense information to damage and defame our club; this website promulgates position which are contrary to the success and standing of our club- and amazingly it finds it’s genesis from the directors’ box.

p.s Etims’ article of today highlights that the disciplinary panel can act, notwithstanding the referee’s report.

    Au Contraire.

My thoughts exactly. To manipulate the rules and influence the game in a way which is not too outrageously obvious , requires great skill and rather than incompetence.

For example ,the ball which hit C McG’s face for which Beaton gave a hand ball , turned a potential Celtic breakaway attack into a free kick for Sevco in a dangerous area. Had he administered the rules honestly , we may have had an opportunity to break for an equaliser ,instead of which Sevco were given an opportunity for a second goal. As i say, high on skill , low on morals.

  6. I don’t know about Michael Delaney the ref but a mate of mine came through the refereeing ranks with a guy. He was a big Tim – got to referee the Chic Charley testimonial. At one point he awarded Celtic a penalty and for a laugh took it himself. He was subsequently called up by the SFA beaks and banned sine die.

  7. Paul67

Rather than putting out Lawwells opinion and letting it be known that he won’t be speaking out, instead, could you give an opinion on whether he should be going public on this?

Could you imagine if it was the other way about?

Do you think Traynor and the King would have stayed silent?

Again, our CEO, who pocketed an obscene amount of money last year and who was pulled up by Auldheid at the AGM for lying to shareholders when stating that the requisitioners were happy with how things were progressing on res 12, has again disgusted the fans by his inaction.

The man is a disgrace and is completely out of his depth.

Never in the history of the club has a person been so financially rewarded for complete mediocrity in performance.

He must wonder how such incompetence as a CEO can yierld such a high salary and bonus.

He has to be removed before our club can push on.

    Paul67

This is what you said after the game against sevco

‘I seldom complain about officiating, but Morelos kicked, punched and stamped on Celtic players off the ball, without caution. I assume referee John Beaton missed each incident but we should see retrospective action.’

I take it Lawwell has told you not to push that any further?

  8. DD

The referee Mike Delaney as he was known, I think comes from Shotts, he lived in Cleland for some time when he worked in the Craig,he has since moved.

But it’s harder to nail than we imagine (again, for the overwrought, that does not mean I think we should not try)

The Sevco fans feel that their side is discriminated against and, seriously, think that racist attitudes are being visited upon that thug Morelos.

  10. There is no chance in hell Beaton saw all 3 incidents. He did not even speak to the player in question. The most extraordinary aspect is that he chooose to lie to protect Morelos. He decided it was better for the world to think he is a hopeless referee than to subject Morelos to the disciplinary procsss and a ban. This is where we are.

  12. There does not need to be a conspiracy to be conspired against.

The mindset and prejudice of the best wee country in the world allows cheats like Beaton and his brethren to do what they do.

It’s easy to cheat when the media maintain their vow of silence alongside authorities. When there are no repercussions for failing in your job then the ref can use his slanted viewpoint and interpretation with impunity.

Seems like the sfa have hired some lawyer to deal with all things rangers and now sevco to find only interpretations of law that suit the huns.

The best wee country has used this constantly.

In European matches you only have to see how refs officiate in favour of the large tv market teams.

Anyone who thinks there is an overreaction from Celtic fans to last weeks game hasn’t been paying attention to away matches this season.

What you are seeing here is a culmination of a shocker of a transfer window and the consequential downturn on the field, resulting in as many defeats as victories on the road to date.

We’d better hope it improves and the home form doesn’t dip, even slightly.

It should be easy for the Board to follow the will of the Celtic support.

After all, it is the season ticket money that underpins the club’s finance at the beginning of each season.

Supporters vote with their wallets and their feet.

What these feet and wallets say is, “bring on the huns, so we can stuff them”, and “how can I get a ticket for Ibrox/Hampden?”

That is the message the club are receiving, in spite of the laughable “only supporting the team” nonsense.

The Celtic support have slept through the last six years, instead of, as the paying life support of the game, seeking alliances with other supporters groups, in other clubs.

It took those other supporters’ actions to stop their entry into the SPL and SFL1 & 2.

Nothing since has stopped “the Journey”.

For a conspiracy, there has to be a secret plan by a group to do something unlawful. The agreement that forms the basis of the conspiracy need not be written, or oral, or even explicit. If it is understood by any means that one is to do such an act, that suffices to constitute a conspiracy.

If Scottish refs learn going up the ranks that they must favour the zombies to advance their careers, that is by definition a conspiracy.

When previously well respected sites like this one start the “no conspiracy” “nothing to see here Timmy” mantra then the game is up. It’s clear that what drives the lead comment on may of these blogs is precisely that. Yesterday we had “We only need a central defender and all will be fine” and today “no conspiracy”. The evidence is in the 94 mins of play. Someone from Celtic should be demanding a sit down with SFA, compliance team and chief of referee’s. Whoever is appropriate. And they should be made to sit through a re run of the tape, and then made to justify each of the dubious decisions made by Beaton.

Morelos incidents are glaring. However there are umpteen decisions throughout the game that beggar belief. Our club should be demanding explanations / justifications on each oversight.

Maybe I’m looking at things too simplistic. However if they don’t comply, it really should go legal. We need another Q.C Paul Mcbride type. Someone that will challenge the hierarchy.

However there is little doubt that there is a growing disconnect between the views expressed by Paul & the general mood of the blog.

A prime example is the 3 Australian cricketers with ball tampering, well planned out in advance just had to have the opportunity to action the cheating. Brought shame on them and their families and the Australian Government moved quickly to condemn it, they were all banned for various periods of time.

Oh for transparency rather than the cesspit of Scottish football and its governance structures, I sincrely hope Scottish Football receives zero from the public purse until it cleans up and is seen to clean up its act.
