Beaton threshold on kicking, stamping and the rest

1148

We deservedly lost at Ibrox on Saturday, so it would have been inappropriate to apportion any responsibility towards referee John Beaton, for the free reign Newco player Alfredo Morelos had to kick Scott Brown, stamp on Anthony Ralston and assault the genitals of Ryan Christie during the game.

These things occasionally happen in football (although seldom in such quantities) and are picked up by the SFA review process.  What is exceptional about these circumstances is that the review process is unable to act as the referee claims to have witnessed each incident and determined no action was worthy of a caution or more.

Beaton will have mitigated his decisions with some or other explanation, perhaps with “It wasn’t that bad a stamp” type comment.  This is how the process works.  The system is rightly designed to protect referees and allow them latitude to make decisions, including the occasional mistake.

It is not always easy to view common assault for what it is, in fact, it is easy to get carried away with an occasion and raise your threshold for such matters.  It is only human to be affected this way.  But this is bad refereeing.

Beaton could have taken the easy route out and claimed he missed one or more of the incidents, each was off the ball, after all.  That would have allowed the review panel to dispassionately decide if such attacks are to be prohibited, or encouraged, in our game.  Instead, he affirmed that in his view, there was nothing in Morelos behaviour worthy of a caution.

I have no idea what Dedryck Boyata said to earn his red card from John Beaton against St Johnstone earlier this season but I defended the referee’s decision that day.  You have to trust match officials to competently carry out their duties.  Do I still trust John Beaton’s views on kicking players, stamping, genital punching and the like?  No.  His views and significantly out of line with mine.

I don’t see a conspiracy in what happened this week, just a referee who was not up to the job.  A good referee would have cautioned Morelos for the first incident (kick on Brown).  This may have prevented the more serious attacks on Ralston and Christie, but the Newco player was not even spoken to after any of the incidents.

These are not easy games to officiate but this was not a game full of controversy or incident, only one player and one referee lost the plot.

OK , but the question was :

Do you consider yourself to be better informed about the needs of the Celtic FC playing staff than our current representatives and about the player recruitment and contract choices our Club has seen fit to make ?

    And the answer was NO.

  2. So the SFA see fit to issue a statement about alleged threats to a match official but were silent when an official was assaulted during a game a few months ago. Shows you what we’re up against ? Peter Lawwell and the Celtic board hang your heads in shame you had all the evidence you needed to clean this corrupt organisation out instead you said nothing . You reap what you sow don’t start moaning about it now .

    You are being disingenuous .

Don’t you know that the sfa and their mouthpieces in the mssm have left no stone unturned to find the Chelsea fan wot did it.

I just watched a montague of the Bhoy Bayo goals now I dont know the level of football he is playing in but he looks fast and strong and is happy scoring with his head or feet.I think he could be a right good signing.H.H.

So are ETims (though no ones confirmed or ref the story)

Whilst it won’t happen I think I’d be relatively pleased ? if it did

  10. Oli Burke may work out, or he may not, if he isny good enough to get into the WBA team Brendan is gonna have a job getting him up to standard so he can get into ours me thinks, the Weah lad sounds good, pity it’s only for the six months, and the Bayo fella hopefully will score for fun, now that a positive post ;-)

We need defenders tho, have done for the past couple of years.

  11. Go Tell

For sure, he would be the icing on the cake, Coleman would be another one as well, loans for quality makes sense, loans for players in the positions we need make sense, if you don’t ask etc.

  12. WE could most certainly do with an enforcer , someone who can put an end to the players who on here are known as hammer throwers . An aggressive power in midfield , who will allow our softer team members of which we have too many , the support and protection required to get them to show face , stop hiding and follow the lead of same said midfield enforcer . It’s what we badly need , we may then never see the half hearted display we witnessed down govan way .

  13. GreeninbingleyinOslo on

Good start with Ollie and Tim, if Bayo is confirmed, an even better start.

Window’s been open five days, FFS.

Think defenders will be bought outright or loan with a view to buy, wish we could keep FB permanently

  15. THE EXILED TIM

I watched the USA v Colombia friendly in November and though Colombia won 4-2 young Weah played well against a very good team.

He was involved in the goals and has good pace and skill.

I paid attention to him because of his father and he was impressive.

Big Vic would be an excellent signing.Doubt it will happen but one can dream.

    Dead right.

In my day known as a ” hatchet man. ”

Early days , but I thought Ralston looked like he could adopt that mantle .

  17. FTW on referees. Agree with all that. Just to add that I, for one, would hate to see VAR in Scodland. A Grimsby player was sent off by VAR after 2 minutes today after the ref gave a yellow. That sleekit mob would have a field day up here.

Oh, and some Aston Villa nonentity just said on radio 5 that Mr Beaton handled the match brilliantly. I suppose he did, right enough, but not in a decent, honest way.

  18. McKenna and a couple to Aberdeen will be the deal,Hayes,Hendry,Miller….not what i would do but….

  19. MACJAY1 FOR NEIL LENNON on 5TH JANUARY 2019 9:25 PM

Thank you for the reply . It was hatchet man in my day too , and as now ,they had them aplenty , Harold Davies and shearer come to mind .

Sorry to disagree regards Ralston , imho had the boy that attitude in his locker he had chances to stiffen a few of them . Wee Bertie ,Roy aitken , davy hay , would have had there revenge , Beaton , or not .

  20. Vic is surplus to requirements at Spurs and Coleman is the same,

I imagine Benkovic is on a fair whack at Leicester, I know we don’t have a hope in hell of signing them but a loan for sure, we NEED a RB and a proper don’t eff with me middy, we can ask FFS.

  21. Go tell the Spartim on

    Bada

    Harbinger of doom ?

The blog was doing so well tonight

I’d be happy with squad players going to Aberdeen but I wouldn’t swap PL for McKenna and I’d give PL away all day every day

  22. Good forward recruitment to replace the Dembele/Griffiths hole. Two of hte three are loans without an option to buy, so that is NOT good, but we are in a fairly desperate place and it should help us get through this season to May before we re-structure again.

The club did a lot of good business in renewing contracts for Forrest, Rogic, McGregor (and Griff) etc; this year. That means that even if bids come in that can’t be resisted, we will get more money than we otherwise would. I still have hopes that time will allow young talent like Morgan, Johnston, Arzani and Kouassi to bridge the gap to the first team but time has run out for Allan, De Vries, Gamboa, Izzaguire and Hayes. Many of our better foreign players have no long term loyalty to Celtic so we can expect bids for N’tcham soon and Simunovic and Edouard in time. It was telling how few of the Academy prospects were taken to Dubai (Aitchison and McInroy overlooked) and one of the 2 going (Ewan Henderson) has made noises about leaving. The other is our 6th choice keeper.

All of this adds up to a situation whereby defensive cover is the priority and I’d suspect we need 3 more recruits unless we are going to turn Bitton and Mulumbu into CB’s or Scott Brown into a RB. The returning Calvin Miller ) along with Hayes or Izzy if they are kept) can cover for Kieran until the sad day when he too is lured south, We have 26 days in which to make inroads on this defensive recruitment.

As for Sevco recruitment. Jordan Jones was always going there. Glen Kamara has never shone in any Dundee game I have seen. Jermaine Defoe is, thankfully, 2 years too late to be of much use but Steve Davis always was and remains a good all round footballer and, far from past it, at 34.

They will remain a hard outfit to overcome but, with the right recruitment, we can motor further ahead of them again.

My biggest concern is the dedication of BR to finish this campaign. If he is,a s ahs been oft quoted on here, going in the summer, I hope he has the professionalism to keep his focus on his current employment while he is here. If he does, he is a far better manager than anyone else in Scotland, including Stevie Clarke.

  23. Just asking for a friend

So Darren Odea was done for a penalty, the referee seen and awarded (Dive)

    So

Did FtSFA look at the Aberdeen 2nd goal against Celtic ???

  24. Go Tell

So do I but no chance, he is gonna turn into a right good player, pity we didn’t buy him a couple of years ago when we were linked with him, someone didn’t think he was worth the money, oh well, one that got away.

    Fan

I have read some good stuff about the boy and he did play a few first team games for PSG at the start of the season, as I said pity it’s only for the six months, eighteen would have been the preferred but hey ho.

    Sammy Baird as well .

Remember it was called ” power play ” ?

A euphemism if ever there was one .

Brendan has probably never faced the kind of blatant skullduggery and cheating which we all witnessed at the weekend last .

His background reassures me that he will be taking steps to prevent a recurrence .

No more capitulation. Perhaps some retribution .

Or get your retaliation in first . :-)

Ralston is a newby .He will be looking to the older guys for guidance in that area.

He has the physical attributes . Give him time .

  26. Celtic is part of my/our family. It really hurts to see some of the injusticies and the club sitting idly by

We need the balls to say “enough is enough” here is what is wrong EBTs , SFA structure , referees et al, fix it or we’ll find another league
